Seeking information on the MCDONALD and CADY families the arrived in Butler Co.,NE prior to 1870. Heads of families included Edward McDonald, Sylvester McDonald, Edwin McDonald, and John McDonald. Also included in the group of arrivals was Ellen (McDonald) Cady with her husband, Martin Cady and their sons Frederick and George Cady. This is part of the McDonald family originating from Albany>Schoharie>Oswego,NY>Butler,MI>Butler,NE The group was located in Pepperville Prec. and later, Alexis. Last recorded contact with this branch of the family was in 1901 with Sylvester McDonald and Nellie Cady returning to MI for a McDonald Family Reunion. Seeking genealogical and relocation information on the family from 1870 and forward. Dave McDonald DLMcDon@aol.com
Hi, listowners -- This announcement is to let you know that we've just finished "closing" all of the RootsWeb lists. This means that the list server will only let you post to a mailing list if you subscribe to it. I'm sorry that this had to be done so hastily, but we didn't really have any choice. The volume of spam that was being sent through our lists had reached a phenomenal level, and I was spending most of my time on that problem rather than improving the systems. Worse, some users had begun to send spam complaints to sites that were completely unrelated to RootsWeb, but could kill our network connection if they received too many complaints. Closing the lists to subscribers became a matter of self-preservation. However, in order to make it easier on you, we've changed things to make it a little more obvious when someone who isn't a subscriber posts to your list. The list server will add the words "{not a subscriber}" to the Subject heading of their message, like this: Subject: {not a subscriber} Ancestors of John BROWN? When this happens, you can use the "bounce" or "redirect" features of your e-mail program (if such things are available) to repost this message to your list, and it should be approved for everyone to see. Or you can write to the poster and invite them to subscribe. Important to remember: some folks will subscribe to a mailing list with one e-mail address, and then try to post with another e-mail address. They don't mean any harm by this. If you notice that someone keeps trying to post to the list from an address that isn't subscribed, and you *want* his posts to be approved, you can add his address to the "accept list." To do this, follow the "Customize Settings" link from the bottom of your listowner utility page, and then choose the option to "Edit the Accept File." If you have any other questions about managing a closed list, please feel free to subscribe to NEWBIE-LISTOWNER-L and ask away -- one of our more seasoned listowners will be glad to answer your questions. -- Regards, Tim Pierce RootsWeb Genealogical Data Cooperative system obfuscator and hack-of-all-trades

In July, RootsWeb experienced one of its largest single-month increases in load with folks using many of our services 25-33% more than in June. We're not quite sure why that happened, but we speculate it's because we've been adding new features and upgrading our servers as fast as contributions allow. We also suspect that the new RootsWeb Review e-zine may be helping folks find new parts of RootsWeb. Here are the detailed statistics on our July operations: o 2,975 independently-Webmastered Websites are hosted by RootsWeb. o 50,245,222 total Web hits: - 13,608,736 were HTML pages. - 6,879,675 were cgi-bin database searches and such. - 29,568,584 were graphics (gifs, jpegs, etc). o 995,249 FTP file downloads from the USGenWeb Archives and the ROOTS-L Library. o 3,967 independently-listowned mailing lists are hosted by RootsWeb. o Thanks to a neat hack by Tim Pierce, we know we shipped 99,934,614 pieces of e-mail to our mailing lists. o 60,000 alt.g and s.g.* Usenet News articles to hosts on three continents. o Approximately 830,304,000,000 bytes in total. As always, RootsWeb remains supported by user contributions. Folks who would like to become a RootsWeb Member or Sponsor (the cost is very modest) are invited to visit: http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/how-to-subscribe.html *** You can become a Member easily using your credit card and our new secure server. *** Support from the Internet genealogical community is *crucial* to RootsWeb's operation. Right now, we could be hosting many more Websites and mailing lists as well as providing many further services to the community, if only we had the resources to do so. Also, we would like to publicly thank Palladium Interactive, publishers of the superb Ultimate Family Tree software, for their support of RootsWeb: http://www.palladium.net/ Thanks to everyone who participates in RootsWeb -- clearly folks are continuing to exchanging a great deal of information! -B -- Dr. Brian Leverich Co-moderator, soc.genealogy.methods/GENMTD-L RootsWeb Genealogical Data Cooperative http://www.rootsweb.com/ P.O. For your info: Copyright laws are a confusing web all by themselves. No one's work may be published in any form in it's entirety without permission, regardless where it is published. Gary B. Hoffman, legal expert for Broderbund Fair Use. "Fair use" allows non-infringing copying of a copyrighted work for such purposes as comment, criticism, news reporting, teaching, scholarship or research. In determining whether such use is fair, courts consider 1.whether the purpose is commercial or non-commercial, 2.the nature of the work, 3.the amount used in relation to the whole work, 4.the effect of the use on the market or value of the work. In general, copying a small amount of a work is considered fair unless it is the heart of the work. You, Genealogy, and Copyright The copyright laws affect both the research and the publication of your genealogy, either a narrative family history or a simple pedigree family line. First, though, consider that the basic facts about your ancestor's life (such as name, birth date and place, marriage partner, date and place, and death date and place) do not receive copyright protection, no matter their source. Whether you went to the county courthouse, rented a microfilm of the relevant records, or found the data in a commercial CD-ROM, the basic facts of a person's life may be freely copied; they are in the public domain. But adding any kind of narration to these basic facts gives rise to a copyright in the creative portion of the work. The more narrative, the stronger the copyright. If you are the author, you should take care to mark your work to give the proper notice. If it is a large or major work, consider registering it and depositing a copy in the Library of Congress. On the other hand, if you find narrative material in a good family source, you should take care not to violate the rights of the author. Remember the idea of "Fair Use," mentioned above, before using more than a sentence or two, seek out the author and get permission. Do not assume that just because you have a copy of a story, you can copy it again or incorporate it into your family's history. If the author is dead, genealogists -- of all researchers -- are unable to use the excuse that they couldn't locate the heirs to seek copyright clearance! Simple pedigree charts are not copyrightable, despite their markings, even when filled in with facts. But add a "modicum of creativity" and you can claim copyright protection in a pedigree chart. The same goes for computerized pedigree data, either in disk form or in a GEDCOM file.

I am looking for dates of death and burial place of gg-grandparents, Wright Wilbur and Mary Ann (Reynolds) Catlin. It is believed Mary Ann died before 1880 in Rising City. Wright Wilbur died 28 Nov 1897, but it is not known if he died while in NB. It is possible one or both are buried in the Fairview Cemetery (also known as Burgess Family Cemetery?) as their son, John Lorenzo Catlin, was married to Sally Ann Burgess. Can someone do a look-up on this for me. Help is appreciated. Sharon (Catlin) Coleman billcol@ix.netcom.com
