My name is Kathleen Burnett -- As of today I am your new List Mom. my connection to Butler Co., NE is slim to say the least. My Loomis and Daggett lines traveled through. I am a hands on List Mom - I am here to make sure this list runs smoothly and begins to grow. Please feel free to contact me with any concerns regarding our list. I work full time, am very involved in genealogical research and am the List Mom for several Mailing Lists. Sometimes it may take me a few hours to get back with you, but be assured, I will. I look forward to getting to know each of you. Gail is going to continue to be on the list and I will be thankful for any help she can give me also. Kathleen Burnett List Mom kburnet@efortress.com
Hi, Tonight I have turned the mail list over to Kathleen Burnett and she will be your new mail list hostess. I hope with the new hostess she can generate traffic on the list that I was not able to achieve. Good luck to all you searching in Butler Co., NE and I hope you find your connections. Gail Casa Grande, AZ
Gail, When and if you decide to make a change in the operation of the NEBUTLER-L@rootsweb.com and it's -D variation, please let me know so I can alter the boilerplate on index.html. The only suggestion that I have is that the county site should NOT have two discussion lists. So I hope the new Rootsweb arrangement embodies the list you operate and not a second one. Thanks, Emmett Mason
The Hoisington mail list that I'm on has just been notified of this problem, and is looking for someplace else to move the list to. And I am in agreement. Perhaps that might be the answer for the Butler Co. site. The list administrator is just beginning to look into other options, but if you'd be interested in finding out what she comes up with, you can email her at hariji@sirius.com. Thanks for the notification. I am not sure of the question! The family I am looking for in Nebraska is Dolista. Also I have researched Parizek and Semrad. Thanks, Elise Semrad
Had an inquiry about bringing this family up to date, but I have lost the address. Please get in touch with me again as we have a family by that name. We were in North Platte, Nebraska. Jerilyn

Searching for your ancestors? The Federal Census records may have the answers you¹re looking for! I will search the Soundex (the index to the Census) for your ancestors in the 1880, 1900, 1910 or 1920 Federal Census for *ANY* state. (Note that the 1910 Soundex is only available for the following 21 states: AL, AR, CA, FL, GA, IL, KS, KY, LA, MI, MS, MO, NC, OH, OK, PA, SC, TN, TX, VA, and WV. The 1880 Soundex only includes families with children age 10 and under. No records are available for 1890.) You will receive a form which includes all of the information found for your ancestor in the Soundex. In addition to the family's place of residence, the following information will be listed for each family member: name, age, month and year of birth (1900 Soundex only), birthplace (state or country), relationship to head of household, and citizenship. Simply provide the following information (numbered as below) for each search: 1. Census year (1880, 1900, 1910 or 1920). 2. State to search (include county or town, if known). 3. Soundex code for surname (see below). 4. Name of head of household (include state or country of birth and date of birth, if known). 5. Name of spouse (include state or country of birth, and date of birth, if known). 6. Names of children or other family members expected in the household (include state or country of birth and dates of birth for each, if known). Please provide full names, if possible, as individuals are often listed by initials or middle names. The birth information is important too, as it will help to identify the correct family. If you do not know the Soundex code for the surname, use the conversion program at this site: http://events.genealogy.org/soundex.html The fees for searches are as follows: 1: $2.50; 2 to 3: $5.00; 4 to 6: $10.00; 7 or more: please inquire for price. (Note: each Census year counts as one search, even if for the same head of household.) Mail your request, including all 6 items required above and payment (check or money order made payable to K. O¹Brien), to: K. O¹Brien 12728 W. 108th St. Overland Park, KS 66210-1106 Please include a self-addressed, stamped envelope (letter size) with your order. You will receive the results within three weeks. Thank you.

I added the newest link to Rootsweb which is essentially a second county page with handy connections to GenConnect, Rootsweb surname searching etc. The Rootsweb icon in the lower right hand corner of the first screen is the link to this new page. Unless you pause the cursor over it you might not know about this change. I am trying it out to see where it best fits on that first screen and the easiest way to do it was to modify that link. Rootsweb is on the move and getting better and easier. Emmett Mason http://www.rootsweb.com/~nebutler/
Just a note to tell all of you that the Butler Co. chapter of this book is online under the "Butler files" link or you can go directly to it at http://www.rootsweb.com/~nebutler/whowhobc.html pages 116-123 with short biographical sketches of people as of 1940. Most Nebr. county sites will have their page online also, if you are interested in other counties. This material was scanned by Ted & Carole Miller Emmett Mason (Butler Co. CC)
For about two months, I have become what is referred to as "County Coordinator", or "CC" for short, after Sue Baker moved on to other things. I do not have Butler Co. roots, rather I was born in Nemaha Co. and now live in Michigan--a retired professor from Central Michigan University. I maintain the Nemaha Co. Pioneers page for Marlene Stillahn who is CC for Nemaha Co. at the present. If your folk came into NE thru Brownville, you might want to look at it http://www.rootsweb.com/~nenemaha/emmett.htm I would be interested in hearing from any of you who have transcribed or contributed web page material for the Butler Co. site. My interest in this is just to know who has done what so I can put the copyright in your name rather than keep changing the CC name on that line of code. Exciting things are happening to Rootsweb (RW) and GenConnect (GC) so check that new stuff out. For example, you can now post obituaries and deeds, etc for your folks. I notice the counter keeps bumping along for hits on Butler but not many new postings. Maybe that is just a result of the "RW Improvers" checking their results. I saw Gail Kilgore's plea to be replaced as the keeper of this list--no I am not volunteering--as I believe someone very close to or in the county should do that. I am not sure who within the county should be contacted. Any ideas or nominations? Anyone in the regional genealogical society or local historical society?? A last point, at present we have four cemetery lists online. Is there anyone here close to Butler Co. cemetery associations who could tell me what lists might be available? ROOTSWEB PUTS IT TOGETHER. Have you ever wished you could look up *everything* at RootsWeb that relates to a particular surname? Now you can! Click on the new option SURNAME RESOURCES at RootsWeb's main page <http://www.rootsweb.com/> or go directly to: <http://resources.rootsweb.com/surnames/>. Click on the letter of the alphabet for the surname of interest, and then select it from the list that appears. This will take you to a "surname resource cluster," where you can search for your surname in numerous databases. For example, using BANKSTON you would find: <http://resources.rootsweb.com/surnames/b/a/BANKSTON/>, where you could search "B" WEB SITES, the OBITUARY DAILY TIMES, or: o The ROOTSWEB SURNAME LIST (RSL). RSL search options are by surname, Soundex, or Metaphone (the latter two are "sounds- like" matches). You can search for updates from the past two months, last month, last week, or for any mention. o TRANSCRIPTION PROJECTS. You might check to see if your immigrant ancestors' names are listed at the Immigrant Ship Transcribers Guild (ISTG). o PRIMARY RECORDS AT ROOTSWEB (from USGenWeb Archives and RootsWeb Searchable Databases). o GENERAL LINKS AND SEARCH ENGINES. There are three options. o ROOTSLINK link registry. You can add a new link also. o SEEKER search engine, which returns surname matches from Web pages -- there is much "hidden genealogy" that this search will help you find. o SURNAME HELPER search engine finds queries and surname registrations posted at various genealogically-related sites on the Web, with participating sites including many USGenWeb and WorldGenWeb sites. All GenConnect boards are indexed in Surname Helper. o MAILING LISTS. Descriptions of lists that relate to this surname, subscription instructions, and links to the archives so you can search or browse past postings. o GENCONNECT. Click on GLOBAL SURNAME SEARCH to find queries that mention the surname of interest that are posted in connection with any county, state, or country in the world. Or click an icon for one of the seven automated boards that together make up a "suite" of boards available for surnames and localities (Queries, Bible records, Biographies, Deeds, Obituaries, Pensions, and Wills). RootsWeb hopes that putting these links under one SURNAME RESOURCES roof will help everyone find all the buried treasure. * * * LATE-BREAKING NEWS. Late in the day on 26 May 1999, Pam Carey Durstock announced: "All done! Complete list of cluster surnames can be found at <http://resources.rootsweb.com/namelist.txt>" 41,000+ GenConnect boards created. 3,000+ Mailing lists created. 6,692 Calendars created. 6,692 Guestbooks created. 6,692 Cluster pages created and (re)generated. * * * GLOBAL SEARCH ENGINE FOR GENCONNECT. Randy Winch just installed the latest upgrade to the Global Search Engine for GenConnect. New Features: expanded search capabilities, including ability to restrict the search to a certain "type" (query, Bible record, bio, deed, obit, pension, will). Sort by date, location, person posting, or subject (and also by ascending or descending order); Posted in the last: day, two days, week, two weeks, month, two months, three months, six months, year, two years, or millennium; Search all of GenConnect, just one country, or just one state. All of these can be used in conjunction with each other in order to fine-tune your search. But, if you want it all, the results are now split into first 50, next 50, etc. Powerful! <http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi?search> * * *
FROM THE OTHER SIDE By Patrick Camunes "There are so many things that are written about the Wall but never anything of being on the other side. I was inspired by the picture Reflections that I use as wallpaper on my PC and a recent story, Autumn Wall." At first there was no place for us to go until someone put up that Black Granite Wall. Now, everyday and night, my Brothers and my Sisters wait to see the many people from places afar file in front of this Wall. Many stopping briefly and many for hours and some that come on a regular basis. It was hard at first, not that it's gotten any easier, but it seems that many of the attitudes towards that war that we were involved in have changed. I can only pray that the ones on the other side have learned something and more Walls as this one needn't be built. Several members of my unit and many that I did not recognize have called me to the Wall by touching my name that is engraved upon it. The tears aren't necessary but are hard even for me to hold back. Don't feel guilty for not being with me, my Brothers. This was my destiny as it is yours, to be on that side of the Wall. Touch the Wall, my Brothers, so that we can share in the memories that we had. I have learned to put the bad memories aside and remember only the pleasant times that we had together. Tell our other Brothers out there to come and visit me, not to say Good Bye but to say Hello and be together again, even for a short time and to ease that pain of loss that we all share. Today, an irresistable and loving call comes from the Wall. As I approach I can see an elderly lady and as I get closer I recognize her.......It's Momma! As much as I have looked forward to this day, I have also regretted it because I didn't know what reaction I would have. Next to her, I suddenly see my wife and immediately think how hard it must of been for her to come to this place and my mind floods with the pleasant memories of 30 years past. There's a young man in a military uniform standing with his arm around her......My God! ......It's...it has to be my son. Look at him trying to be the man without a tear in his eye. I yearn to tell him how proud I am, seeing him standing tall, straight and proud in his uniform. Momma comes closer and touches the Wall and I feel the soft and gentle touch I had not felt in so many years. Dad has crossed to this side of the Wall and through our touch, I try to convey to her that Dad is doing fine and is no longer suffering or feeling pain. I see my wife's courage building as she sees Momma touch the Wall and she approaches and lays her hand on my waiting hand. All the emotions, feelings and memories of three decades past flash between our touch and I tell her that it's alright. Carry on with your life and don't worry about me......I can see as I look into her eyes that she hears and understands me and a big burden has been lifted from her. I watch as they lay flowers and other memories of my past. My lucky charm that was taken from me and sent to her by my CO, a tattered and worn teddy bear that I can barely remember saving as I grew up as a child and several medals that I had earned and were presented to my wife. One of them is the Combat Infantry Badge that I am very proud of and I notice that my son is also wearing this medal. I had earned mine in the jungles of Vietnam and he had probably earned his in the deserts of Iraq. I can tell that they are preparing to leave and I try to take a mental picture of them together, because I don't know when I will see them again. I wouldn't blame them if they were not to return and can only thank them that I was not forgotten. My wife and Momma near the Wall for one final touch and so many years of indecision, fear and sorrow are let go. As they turn to leave I feel my tears that had not flowed for so many years, form as if dew drops on the other side of the Wall. They slowly move away with only a glance over their shoulder. My son suddenly stops and slowly returns. He stands straight and proud in front of me and snaps a salute. Something makes him move to the Wall and he puts his hand upon the Wall and touches my tears that had formed on the face of the Wall and I can tell that he senses my presence there and the pride and the love that I have for him. He falls to his knees and the tears flow from his eyes and I try my best to reassure him that it's alright and the tears do not make him any less of a man. As he moves back wiping the tears from his eyes, he silently mouths, God Bless you, Dad.....God Bless, YOU, Son...... We WILL meet someday but in the meanwhile, go on your way......There is no hurry.......There is no hurry at all. As I see them walk off in the distance, I yell out to THEM and EVERYONE there today, as loud as I can,.........THANKS FOR REMEMBERING and as others on this side of the Wall join in, I notice that the US Flag that so proudly flys in front of us everyday, is flapping and standing proudly straight out in the wind today................................. THANK YOU ALL FOR REMEMBERING
Hi, Just wanted to tell you not to delete your weekly newsletter that you get from Rootsweb. I know the newsletters usually come out tonight but they are set for the 26th and Rootsweb will be unveiling a BIG SURPRISE!!! So stand by and see what they have for YOU!!!!! See ya!! g
I am interested in finding more about Elizabeth GROFF born July 31, 1845 in Lancaster County, PA. She married Samuel W. Mohler (Born July 4, 1850) on January 11, 1874. They stayed in the area for some time and had most of their children there. They moved to Butler County, Nebraska where the most of the children grew up. Elizabeth and Samuel were Dunkards and German was their primary language. Samuel and Elizabeth owned property in the Butler County area. Hi, I am the list hostess for this mailing list and was wondering if there was someone who would be willing to take the list over for me. I would like to move on to other things and I think there has to be someone who can put some life into this list. It is not a busy list so wouldn't take up much time. Contact me if you are interested. Gail
Happy New Year to all. If you haven't been on internet discussion groups for long, I thought I'd let you know about an interesting phenomena that occurs this time of year. From a post on another list, here's the explanation: ------- begin forward message ------- Beginning this Thursday Night, and continuing through the month of January, things are going to be kind of crazy on all the RootsWeb Lists. Why? Because Santa Claus will have been and gone, and we are about to be joined by a whole bunch of Brand New Cousins with Brand New Computers and Brand New On-Line Accounts who will have almost No Idea what they are doing. <G> I would like to ask for both your patience and your help during this time period. Errors will be made (like leaving entire digests in their replies) and Questions will be asked (such as "What's a <snip>?"). Let us all remember that these were once Our Errors and Our Questions and that although our New Cousins may know nothing about Computers and On-Line, many of them will be extremely experienced researchers with overflowing filing cabinets whose contents may hold Your Ancestors! ------ end forward message ------- Now, that said - for all the newbies - don't hesitate to post. Ask your question, make your suggestions. We're here to help. If you have web access, go to Cyndi's list. Check out "Internet Stuff You Need to Know" at: http://www.cyndislist.com/internet.htm Then go back up to her main index and look around - you'll learn a lot.
