Butler-L & -D folks, I received a query from Amanda (Cornettja@aol.com) wanting information on Jane C. Wood Haight. All I have is the bible entry below, apparently it was given to the Nebr. State Historical Society some time in the past. I found it among the many pages on the Butler Co. NEGenWeb site and posted it to the GenConnect Bible Records forum. Can anyone help Amanda with this? If so, reply directly to her. Thanks, Emmett Mason BENJAMIN HAIGHT Bible Records: NSHS Contributed by Elmer Haight, David City, Nebraska Benjamin Haight's Bible passed, at his death, to his daughter Delia Vaughn. Can someone tell me where I might find an obituary for Eda Olney Sherwood, who died on December 23, 1915, in David City, NE? Any help will be appreciated. Charles Olney olneycs@aol.com
Not much happening on the Butler Co. GenWeb site. Activity has been low as school, crops, and the coming of fall busyness occupies many folks. The GenConnect forums are working well and nobody has complained about anything not working. The NEGenWeb coordinators and the County Coodinators held an annual Meet & Greet session a few weeks ago at Aurora, NE. From the humor and email after it was over it appears that all had a good time. Since I live in Michigan, I did not attend. Recently, three more chapters of the Andreas/Cutler 1882 history book were put online by the folks doing that project. Most NE counties have a link to that book which is on a UKan computer. I never heard back from the Veteran's Office in Butler Co. about my inquiry on grave lists, etc. of veterans. And I never heard back about the Read Twp. cemetery book which I understand exists. Does anyone on this list have a bibliography of Butler Co. references? That is, useful local books, etc. that we should be sharing the titles of. Searching is getting better and often works but maybe a short list of basic references should be publicized somehow. Thanks, Emmett Mason
I recently found my G G Grandparent's Jan and Frantiska Parolek's grave site in Abie NE - at the St. Peter Paul Cemetery. I was also searching for a St. Mary Cemetery. I found one in David City but it was not the right cemetery. I am guessing there is more than one. Could someone please let me know where this other cemetery is located. Also I have the names of there sons listed in the 1925 Colfax Atlas Index. Could someone explain what this Index is? Thanks Behrend926@AOL.Com
sent to Australia from England 50 years ago. Check out the story on http://www.cbs.com/flat/story_138691.html 60 Minutes presented an hour long program about the accidental discovery of the shipping of children for 2 decades from children's homes in England to institutions in Australia. The children were told they were orphans and the parents were told their children had been adopted. Now 50 to 30 years later, they are discovering this was not so! These children are not even considered to be citizens of Australia and have to go through the naturalization process to get passports to visit parents in their 80's or 90's. There is an organization set up by Margaret Humphreys (who made this discovery) that is researching and trying to connect the children with their families and to locate their birth certificates. It is called the Child Migrants Trust. The records they are using are microfiche. This is a genealogy nightmare!!!!!! I have shared this with the lists to which I belong. Please share with other lists. -- "Bureaucrats need crisis in order to survive. If there isn't a crisis of some kind, someone might decide that a number of positions could be eliminated." This list (NEBUTLER-L@rootsweb.com and NEBUTLER-D@.rootsweb.com) is now in my name. Our thanks to Kathleen and Sue for running it in the past. Many web pages and queries have "clickable" email links. Some users have mailer programs that cannot handle that process. If your mailer program won't do it and you can see the email address you want to sent to, (1) copy/paste the address, (2) copy the email address down and use it later, (3) memorize the email address and use it later. If you cannot see the actual email address, try "right clicking" the link and look at the "properties" of the link. You may be able to see the address so you can write it down. Also some addresses may become visible at the bottom left of your browser screen when you pause the cursor over that link. I have tried to make all email address visible and as a link on the Butler Co. NEGenWeb pages. Now I need a favor, If there is anything on the Butler pages that frustrate you, won't work, should be changed, need to be added, etc., PLEASE let me know: Masontree@aol.com If you have a genealogy homepage and want a link from Butler Co., let me know the details. Dear List Members: On one of my lists, the availability of "Post-em" on the Social Security Death Index at Rootsweb was mentioned. I felt this information should be shared with each of you. It is getting so easy in our what we feel safe, world of genealogy, to fall into the trap out there on the internet to give information on the living, our parents, our siblings our children and our grandchildren because we love them so. We do have to be careful. Kathleen Burnett List Mom " I too found this "Post-ems" to be wonderful and am adding information to the Social Security Death Index on Rootsweb for some of my ancestors or sometimes just little memorials. I do feel we need to remember though, that we need to be careful on what we add. Meaning information on living people. On one hand - this wonderful tool is great for us, family historians, but on the other hand, it could become a key for those who try to gather information on the living to use fraudulently. I usually do not send out websites - but this one is so great I felt I had to. There is not a one that will not be able to gain something from it. Dear Butler Co. Listers, I notice on the IGI that there have been MANY babies named Napoleon. Did any of you have a Napoleon Smith who went by the nickname Ponie. We are now mulling over the idea that it could be a child's way of pronouncing Napoleon. Anything to find the ancestors. And I am still searching for his brother, Jett, whose birth name might have been Jedediah Smith. They were probably born sometime between 1815 and 1822, possibly in Ontario, Canada, or in Illinois or Iowa, but might have lived later in Nebraska. Since other branches of the family settled in Omaha, Butler Co. is a good guess. Thanks. VIRGINIA
Rootsweb is testing a new searcher of the SSDI (death index). It is in beta testing stage, but I added that link under the USA links, scroll down to the Rootsweb set of links and you will find it. This may be redundant but.... Can you help me? I know about the Eastern Nebraska Genealogy Society and the Nemaha Genealogy Society serving southeastern Nebr. Are there GSs slightly to the north or west of Butler Co. that users of our site should know about? If you have a name or link, please let me know. Does anyone have any problems with the Butler Co. NEGenWeb page? Problems with organization, your browser, finding things? Suggestions are welcome. I contacted all the 1997 query submitters, found four bad email addresses which I have flagged. Have not heard back from the Butler Co. Veteran's office about up-to-date grave lists. There has been very little activity by searchers this month. I guess the "Butlerites" are on vacation or busy in the fields. Emmett Mason Emmett Mason
Greetings, I am interested in corresponding and sharing information with anyone who has interest in or knowledge of this surname in the Butler Co. area. I have: Van Buren E. WILSON, born 1838, NC; died 1912, Rising City, NE (my notes say he died at the home Celia MORGAN - possibly a daughter???) William H. WILSON, born 1837, NC; married Elizabeth WAGLE, 1864, place unknown; died 1924 near Rising City, NE (at the home of his daughter Mrs. ---- (Jesse) Harris Richard Taylor (R.T.) WILSON, born 1849, NC; married Rose A. HINNERS, 1882; died 1932 at his home near Rising City, NE. R.T. and Rose had the following children: Sarah Matilda WILSON, born 1849; died 1963, IL George Edward WILSON, born 1886; died 1896, NE Mary Capitola WILSON, born 1888; died 1971, WY Emma Luella WILSON, born 1892 ====== The above WILSON's were brother's of my great great grandmother, Amanda WILSON Hardy. I do know that they still had descendants in Butler Co. in the 1950s and maybe early 60s as my mother has spoken about visiting Wilson relatives there during those times. Any and all clues will be appreciated as to any descendants and or living relatives. Thank you for your time. Best Wishes, Liz

Butler Co. township name verification Since I do not live in Nebraska, I would like some help verifying the current names and location of townships in Butler Co. At the URL below is an (1) alpha listing and, at the very bottom, a (2) simple diagram. I am not certain either version is absolutely correct. Advise on these names and locations would be appreciated. http://www.rootsweb.com/~nebutler/twplist.html If you ever find a *bad link* on Butler NEGenWeb, please let me know from the email link there or on this list. Reminder: If your surnames have not been put in a query for Butler Co., please submit a query giving names, dates, and Butler Co. places, so that *new seekers* can make connections. For example, this week a California Knope ask an existing Knope query if there was a family connection to her father. She did *not* include any dates nor any Butler or Nebr. places, just her name and her father's name. Reminder: There is a place for your family bible records, biographies, deeds, obituaries, pensions, and wills if you are inclined to submit them. The older the better. Since items after 1920 may involve living persons be careful about posting those. Many of the NEGenWeb county coordinators are meeting in Aurora, on the 13th, for a few days of business and discussion of topics related the NEGenWeb and county web sites. Their purpose is to help one another and improve what we do with Nebraska genealogy. Emmett Mason, Butler Co. NEGenWeb county coordinator

Welcome to new CCs and Volunteers, glad to have you here. * Butler Co. has been fairly quiet with 8 queries and 1 obit in July, * 7 veteran's graves sites contributed by Ken Schmit who has recently taken 250 tombstone photos, * 1 lookup volunteer identified (Thanks to William Wever), and * I wrote a letter to the Butler Co. Veteran's Office asking for official list of graves. * 184 pioneer names added for Nemaha Co.
