    1. [NEBUTLER] Cemetery advise needed
    2. Would someone familiar with Circle Mound Cemetery and Blue Valley Cemetery help Gayle Wistar with the grave of Hannah [Boggs] Walker? Gayle believes Hannah is buried at Circle Mound but the Butler Co. web pages shows her in Blue Valley. Gayle is also wanting the 1907 obituary for Hannah Walker. If you know anything which bears on these two cemeteries that would help Gayle, please contact her directly. >> Gayle Wistar g.wiz@gateway.net Hannah Boggs (b. Jan 16, 1860) in Kentucky (probably Carter Co) married Pleasant Adams WALKER (about 1880). Their children were William, Albert, Jerry, Ida, Lavisa, and Arlie, all born in Kentucky. Hannah & Pleasant Walker moved to NE and Hannah (d. Nov 28, 1907). She is buried at Circle Mound Cemetery, Butler Co. NE. [editor's note: Hannah Walker is presently in the Blue Valley Cem list online, is this an error?] >> Thanks, Emmett Mason http://www.rootsweb.com/~nebutler

    1. [NEBUTLER] Info on Linwood Hill grave list
    2. Does anyone know of the existance of a Cemetery Book for Linwood Hill Cem? I have had an inquiry wanting to know if such exists. Curiosity: The GNIS data base for cemeteries gives a Rogers, NE location for Linwwod Hill, wonder why they did not use Linwood or some Butler Co. place. I believe Rogers is in Colfax Co. -- Just thinking out loud.

There did seem to be a problem with some of the censuses with people being 'out of place'. I don't know about the 1860 one, but the 1870 Dawson county one has a lot of Cheyenne county names included. It's noted in the margins that those people were actually Cheyenne co. people, but no explanation why they were included in the Dawson Co. pages. We can't figure out just why they were counted there unless they were traveling and were staying over in Plum Creek at the time, or working on the railroad, etc. Weren't people supposed to be counted where the census taker found them at that time? My earlier message about the section from Andreas was mainly to point out that in that particular history of Butler county, it says that there were only 29 people in the county in 1861, so perhaps that one page with 27 names is all there was for the 1860 census of the county. 1. [NEBUTLER] 1860 Census Butler County, more than 27 people?
    2. J. M. Freed
    3. Emmett, When I was in the Fort Wayne Library between Christmas and New Years, I did look at the "original microfilm" of Butler County NE, 1860 census. I recall that I had a dickens of a time finding the page number (page 95) that was in the index for "J. McCabe". It was at the end of a roll, out of place, if I remember correctly. HOWEVER, what I'm writing about is that the 27 people were at the end of the roll, on a page (95) by themselves. Since I found the individual for whom I was looking, J. McCabe, I paid little attention to other concerns at the time. It may be that the remaining part of Butler County for the 1860 census was earlier on the microfilm! Yet the census-transcribed portion contains only the 27 individuals. I've decided to send this to the entire Butler Co. list to ask others if they have found that the microfilmed1860 Federal Census for Butler County actually contains more than the 27 people? 3. In 1860, Nebraska was still a territory, and there were very few people in the area that later became Butler County in 1868. There was probably not an established post office in the county yet, so mail was sent to the nearest settled town that had a post office then whoever went to town got the mail. According to the Andreas' Butler County chapter there were only 29 people in the county by 1861. One of the areas of the county was settled by a town company that came from Plattsmouth, so there is a chance that they meant the town in Cass County. If you would like to check the early history of the county, you can find the Butler County Chapter from Andreas' History of Nebraska (1882) at: http://www.ukans.edu/carrie/kancoll/andreas_ne/butler/butler-p1.html There is a Mr. McCabe that's listed in the names index for the Butler Co. chapter. 3. Dan, Thanks for your comments below. I have seen the reference to which you refer below, and I was puzzled then and am still puzzled on the origin of Butler County. The Handy Book for Genealogists state that Butler County was organized in 1856. If the county had only 27 people in it by 1860, how could it have been organized? OR, would it be safe to state that the "organized" date of 1856, was just the date at which the territorial government decided that a certain portion of the state should be a specific county, and that the county officers and offices (e.g., a county court house) may have come much later? If that is true, where did the local inhabitants, who arrived prior to the time that county offices were open to conduct business, record their marriages, divorces, land purchases, etc.? For example, since there was a McCabe Ranch in Butler County by 1859, where would I go to find out "Which" McCabe was its owner? Thanks in advance. 3. The only 1860 Federal Census for Butler County, NE, that I have seen, shows only 6 dwellings (27 individuals), all supposedly located in Butler County, with an address of Plattsmouth P. O. I have an 1876 Butler County, NE map, but it does NOT show Plattsmouth P. O. I am specifically interested in the "J. McCabe" shown in the 1860 census (Dwelling # 827). I am wondering if he has any connection to the "McCabe Ranch" shown on this 1876 map, that is located in the center of Savannah Township, on what appears to be both the "Old Government Road" and the Mormon Trail. The closest P. O. to the McCabe ranch on this 1876 map is "Patron P. O." Does any reader know if the Plattsmouth P. O. later became the Patron P. O.? Further, does anybody have any knowledge of this J. McCabe, listed as 48 years of age, a farmer and born in Ohio? He is listed with Sarah A. Watson, age 36, b. Kentucky, and apparently her four children: Oliver, 17, b. Kentucky; Louisa, 11, b. Kentucky; John, 7, born Missouri; and Elizabeth, 2, born Nebraska. What is the "connection" between this J. McCabe and Sarah A. Watson? One last question: Butler County, NE, in 1860, must have had more than 27 individuals in the county. 3. I see there is a discussion regarding schools in Butler County, NE. I have a photo of the Octavia School Building taken May 22, 1908. My great grandfather, Samuel MOHLER, was a janitor in the school for many years to supplement his farming. On another limb, I had a great aunt, Emma PARNELL who was a school teacher in the Edholm & Octavia area. She later married Benjamin WIGGENS. I have paperwork from yet another ancestor who lists teachers for the District No. 1 as Miss Turner, Miss Betus, Ed Van Fleet, George Colbank, Mr. William Fairbanks, and Miss Anna Hurt who married Jim Hutchinson. These teachers would have taught about 1885 to about 1895. I have NO other information regarding these individuals, so please don't ask for it. All I have is a list naming these people as teachers. 3. Emmett, I didn't know how you wanted information for the Butler Co. Schools page added. So I am sending this to you. Butler Co. school teachers from the Carpenter family; 1. Jennie (Dougherty) Carpenter Jan. 16, 1853 - Nov. 5. 1905 School teacher, District 13 Alexis Township 2, Mary Ann (Hales) Carpenter Nov. 1854 - Oct. 20, 1931 District, Unknown Lived Summit Township Also, this small piece was in the front of my Methodist Record Book. EARLY SCHOOL DISTRICT "By the year of 1876 ...... Two of the earlist school districts in Butler County had already been organized, District 11 in Savannah Township and District 13 in Alexis Township. A small one room school house had been built by District 13 on the mid-point of the south side of section 23 in Alexis Township. This location was two miles west of the present town of Bellwood on the north side of todays highway 64. This seemed like a suitable and convenient location, and arrangements were made with the school board to hold Sunday worship services in the schoolhouse. In time this school would be known as the Gerard School." Note: It was my understanding that this building was the first home of the Gerard family. That it was sold to the county for a school. Also the congregation that met in the building from 1876 to 1881 later became part of the Methodist Conference. However I can't find my source. Looks as if you are busy adding new features. Dawn

    2. Based on Dawn Amos' mention of District 82 school and a photo of what purports to be the first school building (log) photo, I have started a web page for old schools on the Butler co. site. I will gradually move all "school" links and items to that page. So, If you, or your ancestors, walked or rode a horse, buggy, mule, cow or Model T to school, let us hear what you remember. The older the better, I don't know if driving a ''75 Ford or Chev counts, but teaching in a one room school does. (grin). Maybe you have an ancestor who taught school. Maybe you have old class lists or photos. Emmett Mason http://www.rootsweb.com/~nebutler/schools.html

    1. [NEBUTLER] VRBKAs in Nebraska
    2. Roberta Watson
    3. My great-grandmother was Mary Vrbka, b. 1868 in Austria, d. 1964 in Idaho Falls, Idaho. She married Elmer? Pinney, and they eventually ended up in eastern Idaho. They had 6 children, at least three of whom (John Earl Pinney, Joseph L. Pinney and Carrie Minnie Pinney - Carrie was my grandmother, who married John (Jack) Casper in Jefferson County, Idaho) were born in the 1890s in Brainerd, Butler County, Nebraska. A fourth child Perry Austin Pinney may have been born to this family also while they were living in Brainerd. (The oldest, Chancey Albert Pinney was born in Bird City Kansas, and the youngest, Louis Anthony Pinney, was born in 1902 in Idaho.) I know that Mary Vrbka was an Austrian immigrant (she lived to be 96, so I knew her when I was a child, and she spoke with a heavy Austrian accent). I recently discovered that there were other Vrbkas on the Social Security Death Index shown as having lived or died in Nebraska, some in Brainerd and some of the same generation as my grandmother and her brothers. I am wondering if perhaps Mary came to the U.S. in the company of one or more of her siblings (including a brother or two, whose offspring would still cary the Vrbka name), and if her parents possibly came, too. If anybody has any information to share on relatives of Mary Vrbka, I would be greatful to share what I have about her descendants. Also, if anybody knows for sure if Elmer was my great grandfather's first name I would love to know that as well. They were divorced before I was born, and I assume the divorce was in Idaho although I haven't been able to find it yet. I was told as a child that he was an Irish immigrant, and that they had divorced due to his drinking problem. However, the few traces of him I have found on the Mormon web site indicate that he may have been born in 1864 in Wayne Township, Lafayette County, Wisconsin, and that his father John Pinney (married to Jane) may have been born there as well. Indeed, the Lafayette county land patent records for 1841 show one Albert G. Pinney (married to Lucy A. Jones), who may have been John's father, owning land there at that time.

    3. I think the sign for it says Edholm Valley Cemetery, but it's possible that it has another name. I have ancestors that are buried there and have visited it. There are quite a few graves there, so it's not a small family cemetery. It's near Octavia, but I can find it easier by going straight west from Linwood. GNIS isn't always accurate. We discovered that they had a creek listed for Hamilton County, but we couldn't find it. When we contacted them, they discovered an error and sent us an apology and corrected the mistake. The creek was actually about four counties away from Hamilton County. They do have errors, and do not have everything listed. If you find something that they don't have, you need to find the actual coordinants (latitude and longitude) and send the information to them through their website. They will check it out for you. I think it's the first time I've ever dealt with a government agency that didn't insist that they were always right and went out of their way to correct something. <g> Connie Trudy A Plotz wrote: > I don't know why it is not on the list.
