The Sand Hills are a bit east of Chadron and might "start' about Rushville, county seat of Sheridan Co., the county next east of Dawes Co, of which Chadron is county seat. But the "center" of the Sand Hills is Cherry Co with Valentine as its county seat, though Valentine is a bit to the east side of the "real" Sand Hills area. A special sort of grass grows there which is better capable of holding the sandy soil from blowing away. They often plant telephone or electric poles with old rubber tires around the bass to help keep the loosened soil from blowing from the sides of the pole. One herds very few animals per acre there, lest they eat the grass to thin. Cordially, Karl E. Moyer Lancaster PA (but Chadron in 1990)
