But, since THORPE/THORP/THARP, is one of our family surnames, and that's the line we seem to have a bit of Native American come down, I've got a couple bios on Jim THORPE. I don't think our ancestor would even be of the same tribe, yet, I kept them anyway. The bios are still under copyright protection, but I can adapt and extract some, that may help some, I hope: This information is adapted from "Jim Thorpe Biography" at the Jim Thorpe Home Page. The URL is listed bio.html at www.cmgww.com, which I suppose can be inverted and decoded. I also adapted material from, "Thorpe, Jim" Microsoft Encarta 96 Encyclopedia. It mentions that calling Jim THORPE a great athlete, would be an understatement. Calling him the greatest all around-athlete of our century would better describe him, even if some object, because his accomplishments say it all. Just, his VR's are out of date with Comstock High School's dates. He was born 28 May 1888 in a small cabin in OK, near Prague, and went to Carlisle, Indian School. He did have some French and Irish ancestry, but he was primarily Sac and Fox Indian Ancestry. He d. about 1853. His Native American name was Wa-Tho-Huk, which means in English, "Bright Path." But, his English name was James Francis Thorpe. His first year at Carlisle school was 1907. He got the attention of his coach in football and track, and performed remarkably, especially on the varsity football team. In 1909 Jim went to NC where he played semiprofessional baseball. Back to Carlisle, he played halfback in football, and in 1911 and 1912, he made the All-American team. In the meantime, he also excelled in virtually all sports. In 1912 in the Olympic Games, he won both the pentathlon and decathlon events, although he was still leading the Carlisle Indian School to the national collegiate championship. He also played six year Major League Baseball. He played professional football for the New York Giants and Boston Braves. He later led his Canton Ohio Bulldog football team to success, not retiring until 1928-1929. In 1950, the American Press chose Jim Thorpe as the greatest football player and greatest all-around athlete of the first half of the twentieth century. He was in 1963 chosen for the Pro Football Hall of Fame. So, I think we can see why Jim was not on those football rosters, since the famous Jim Thorpe was out of place and out of time, for 1933-34 High School Football in Nebraska, after he had already retired from professional football. -- Kind Regards, Sandi Goetze sandi@frazmtn.com Sponsor of Rootsweb Support Rootsweb, <http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/how-to-subscribe.html> Pine Mtn.
