Cherie, The Nebraska Institution for Feeble Minded Youth is probably now the Beatrice State Developmental Center (BSDC). The website http://www.hhs.state.ne.us/ded/dedindex.htm has some information about the current program along with a phone number for BSDC and the address of the umbrella agency it is under. Just a couple of years ago, a number of state agencies were merged together into a giant umbrella agency. BSDC was in the Department of Public Institutions and was thus merged into this new umbrella agency. I'm not sure you could have gotten any information from BSDC in the past, but I'm sure it's even lot harder now since there's a larger bureaucracy to deal with. Like other state residential institutions, it would have probably had a standing contract with some funeral home and cemetery for residents who died. FYI, a number of patients were sent to BSDC even into the 1950s who were not mentally retarded -- some children were sent there because they had cerebral palsy or other conditions even if they did NOT have mental retardation (now known as developmental disabilities). Who knows what percentage. So, don't automatically assume your relative was mentally retarded; it could have been another disabling condition. Regarding the funeral home: I find three in Beatrice via http://www.555-1212.com -- Fox Funeral Home 402-223-4096 1116 N 19th St Beatrice, NE 68310 Griffiths-Hovendick Chapel Incorporated 402-223-3521 708 N 6th St Beatrice, NE 68310 Harman-Wright Mortuary 402-223-2341 623 Elk St Beatrice, NE 68310 Harman-Wright Mortuary is probably the existing business that evolved from the Scott and Harmen undertakers. Regarding the cemetery, when I looked up cemeteries for Beatrice on http://www.555-1212.com it only came up with one listing: Beatrice Cemetery Association 402-223-3129 Rr 1 Beatrice, NE 68310 Being a rural area though, they should be able to help you locate the cemetery and if any records still exist for Evergreen Home. The undertakers were >Scott and Harmen at Beatrice. Are they still around? This death was in the >1920's. Would like to visit this grave site if I can find it.
