The list is completely free, and Bill Oliver volunteered to be the ListMom a year ago just so it would be available for anyone wanting to make contact with other researchers. The people who spam mailing lists will not always subscribe to lists, but will find out the address for sending messages to each list, and then send their spam to several at once. Some of them have automated software that will do it for them. Sometimes, they will subscribe to several at one time, send their message, and then unsubscribe, all within a few minutes. That's why it's so hard to stop them from spamming our lists. Rootsweb seems to have some very good filters set up to stop this, but there are still some that get through. It takes quite of bit of their time and resources to take care of it all. By closing the mailing list so that only subscribers can post, it will help to cut out the spam. From now on, only subscribers will be able to send messages to the list. It will not make any difference to those of us who are already subscribed. The only one that it will make a difference to, besides the spammers, is Bill, who will have a little more work to do, checking, and subscribing and unsubscribing people, but he feels it will be worth it, if it stops any additional spam messages from getting through.
