Nebraska is celebrating its 137th birthday. It was the 37th state admitted to the union, March 1, 1867. The name Nebraska is derived from a Native American word meaning flat water. The state flower is the goldenrod; state bird, the western meadowlark; state insect, the honeybee; state mammal, the whitetail deer; state tree, the cottonwood; and state fossil, the mammoth.
