Greater Omaha Genealogical Society And the Omaha Public Library Present their 8th Annual Beginning Family History Series 3rd Saturday mornings, Jan thru June 2005 9:00 a.m. to noon Mormon Trail Center Learn how to track your family’s history, how to record the information so that it makes sense to another, about recording the family stories so that they ’re not lost, and about some of the kinds of records that might be available to detail the events in your family. January 15, 2005: Getting started with the basics. Learn what the forms are, what types of information to look for, where to find the foundations for a successful family search. Beginning organization will be woven into the class. Develop a time line to look for family events that might have created records. February 19, 2005: Vital records for vital information and substitute sources when vital records aren’t available. Learn about documentation of important sources so that you can find information again, so that others will know you’ ve done a good job at tracking the family, & to verify the work of others. March 19, 2005: Using the Census makes sense. An essential resource for US and even some international research, these ten year time checks in a family’s make- up also give clues to other records to research for family information. April 16, 2005: Dead men tell no tales, but their records do. Beyond death certificates (February’s class), the discussion will focus on cemetery records, tombstone art and symbolism, funeral homes, obituaries, wills, probates & estate settlements. May 21, 2005: Tracking the family across the world without leaving Omaha. The LDS Church spends millions of dollars and man hours gathering the genealogical records of the world into one place. Learn how to use the Family History Centers and the online resources to further your research without leaving Omaha. June 19, 2005: How to jump the water to find immigrant origins. Learn what is necessary to know where to start looking successfully for the roots in the "old country." Classes are free, but pre-registration* is requested to provide adequate handouts for attendees.
