Nebraska. The river eventually took a lot of their property. Thomas died before my birth and I was only three when Charity died. I have a very vague memory of her. My grandparents and my father and one of his youngest brothers have all passed away but the rest of the family lives in the Ponca NE/Sioux City IA? South City NE area." "Charity and Thomas did not live in Wynot...they lived on the old river bottom near Maskell..... most likely just considered to be Dixon County.....I visited the old home stead in my YOUNGER years and what a beautiful place I remember it to be....Artisian well and all.....Thomas was the one who actually ran the ferry across the river and back and Gran (Charity) always had a pot of coffee of the stove for all of those coming off the ferry on that side. Thomas was considered to know the river very well and in the winter when the river froze over no one crossed until Thomas declared the river to be save. One gentleman met his maker for not listening to Thomas.....the ice was still too thin and the gentleman took not only his team of horses but wagon as well and all plunged thru the ice into the icy water and perished."
