Hi, The photos from Volume II are now on-line -- so the two volume set of Samuel Clay Bassett's History of Buffalo County, Nebraska, and Its People is now complete. Volume I recounts the events of the droughts, grasshopper invasions, blizzards, county seat controversay, etc., as well as lists of many names of club, lodge and church members, school histories, and photos of individuals, early homes, churches and schools, etc. Added to this on-line version are an every-surname index and an image index. Volume II is biographical sketches of about 375 individuals, and includes portraits and family photos. This volume also has an every-surname index and an image index that are not part of the original book. Samuel Clay Bassett was among the Civil War veterans who first settled in Gibbon, Nebraska, in 1871. Previous to that group of "colonists", there were only a very few settlers in Buffalo County. He taught school for a couple years, worked his farm, served several terms in the state legislature, and was a member of the Nebraska State Historical Society board for 20 years, serving as its vice-president for 15 years. His two-volume history is the standard source of information about the early days in Buffalo County.
