    1. [NEBRRoots] Death registration - BLAKE, Thomas 1930
    2. K&D Lawrence
    3. Hello listers, I am wondering how I go about getting a death registration for a Thomas BLAKE who died in December 1930, possibly in Holdrege, NE, as that is where he was living in 1930, recorded in the census. He was buried in the Elwood Cemetery, Gosper Co., NE on Dec.10, 1930. I am trying to find out if he is the same Thomas BLAKE who was the son of my great aunt Mary. The information in the census all points to my Thomas, but if it is possible, I would like to confirm my suspicions. I have obtained his marriage record from Michigan, but it doesn't give his parents' names. Any help at all will be greatly appreciated. I am not familiar with Nebraska research. - Karen in BC Canada

    1. [NEBRRoots] NEGenWeb Project Nebraska Obituary Abstracts updated
    2. The NEGenWeb Project Nebraska Obituary Abstracts has had 5 more pages uploaded today. We now have 290 pages online. The obituaries posted here are abstracts because these are recent. We do not have any further information and suggest contacting the newspapers listed for more information. If you have any old obituaries published before 1923, please consider submitting them to the county coordinator that your obituaries pertain to. None of the abstracts on this site are any further back than 2001. Older obituaries can be found either through the individual county sites or check your local LDS Family history center, Nebraska State Historical Society and local newspapers & genealogical societies. If you have any questions about this site please let us know. We are not currently accepting submissions for this site. This site will be updated at least once a week. http://www.rootsweb.com/~neobits/index.htm The Omaha World Herald already has a large online archive so no Omaha abstracts will be posted here. The only abstracts on our site are taken from ONLINE Newspapers. 1. [NEBRRoots] (no subject)
    2. Sometime after the holidays, G.O.G.S. is going to start a writers group for people interested in writing their personal or ancestral histories. Proficiency in writing is not required, just an interest in recording your history and a willingness to share a bit of what you write at each session. Purpose is to inspire each other to keep writing, and perhaps spark some other memories that we need to record in our own life stories...or the life stories of family members. This will be held on another night than the regular meeting night and won't be strictly limited to G.O.G.S. members, although membership is encouraged because members get the newsletter which give all the latest news updates, discounts on workshops that the society holds, etc. (incIuding a 10% discount on the soon to be released 365+1 Genealogy Tips. Any profits from sales of this book go to buy more materials at the W. Dale Clark Library.) Karen

    3. G'Day Good Folks, "Things I learned while looking for something else": [the late Sidney Harris, Columnist, Chicago Tribune] Thanksgiving is about upon us! And, the following story has absolutely nothing to do with improving computer skills. However, that is not going to stop me this week. Our youngest grandchild is a five year old grand daughter who has begun her school career. She is so eager to learn to read and write that she really bugs me to use the "spare" computer to write. Anyway, the other day her Mother found "writing" on the garage siding. When asked why there was marker marks on the garage, our very precocious grand answered, "Well ... I ran out of paper." She is a veritable "chip off the ole block!" Since I really wish to give everyone something useful, I will mention that there is an obituary index that might be useful for those researching in Ohio. The Hayes Presidential Center in Fremont, Ohio, has over a half million references in their nineteen city on-line index from newspapers. That URL is: http://index.rbhayes.org/ Wado, Bill Oliver ListAdmin

    3. Bless You, Pam, Your kindness over the years, and your heroic efforts to help as many of us family researchers as possible, has truly and deeply inspired me to do my own part as best I can. Last year I therefore volunteered as County Coordinator for ILGenWeb's Fulton County, Illinois website, and as listmom for ILFulton-L. For one month I have been working night and day to post scans and transcribed information onto the ILFulton website from the treasured and rather rare 1871 Atlas Map of Fulton Co., Illinois (publ: Andreas) after paying a small fortune for it on eBay. My NEBRASKA family came directly from Fulton Co., Illinois in the 1860s, along with many other families. I invite all of you Nebraska researchers to visit our ILFulton website to SEARCH YOUR SURNAMES using our simple search engine which checks our 1,000 pages at once. The 1871 Fulton Co., Illinois Atlas homepage where I am adding links to these pages as I post them is at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilfulton/1871FultonAtlas/1871AtlasMap.htm Pam, I am already receiving terrific response from other family researchers who are in turn inspired by my all-out sharing efforts, and they are volunteering to help me do more than I could by myself. All this sharing is attributable to your magical and selfless giving. Thank you for being the Mother Theresa of genealogy! 3. Greets All! Finally after almost 8 months I have totally redone the 1895 atlas! For those of you who have used the atlas for many years, the url has gone back to the original url: www.LivGenMI.com/1895 If you have added any links to the atlas over the years, please check to see what the new url is for whatever page you linked to. EVERY SINGLE PAGE url has changed! I will be leaving the old pages up for about 2 weeks until people can get the links corrected. Basically, there is now a folder for each state inside the atlas, and inside each of the states there is 2 folders, one for the county maps and one for the index pages. For the first 6 years of the atlas it was supported by my nephew but when he sold his company and I had to change servers, and they wanted $2000 a year, I could no longer afford those costs. So it was find a place for the atlas or pull down all of my sites which I hoped I would not have to do. Since I had been on the Board of Directors of the USGenNet.org site, which is the first & only 501c3 host for genealogical & historical sites, it seemed to be the best idea to move everything over to their server. The only problem was that the urls were not compatible, and thus I have had to recode every page again. I am sure that thousands of you found out about the "404 not found errors" over the last 10 months, and I apologize for the time it took for me to recode the pages but many of you may recall that I was hit by a red light runner in 2001 and have been through 13 surgeries and numerous other procedures which slowed down my computer capabilities to get things done. I have also added a challenge grant thermometer that I hope all the visitors and those who have been helped by the maps might consider a donation to USGenNet.org to keep these maps on line. Because the bandwidth of the USGenNet.org site has almost doubled with the addition of all my sites, there was no way that the donations that were being given at that time would be able to support all of the addition of 4 gigs of new data. So I looked into the figures of those people that have visited the atlas and found that just between May & November over 10,000 people went from the atlas to the main page of USGenNet.org. If just half of those people would donate $1 that would complete the grant thermometer that I have set up and would cover the costs of the site for almost 6 months. Since I love to beat even my own goals I would love to see that total doubled, but it is up to you the viewer and what you think the data is worth. When you make a donation, please make sure to put the phrase either on your PayPal donation or snail mail donation "1895 Atlas" that way I will know to make sure that our Treasurer will note next to your name on our Members page that the atlas is the project you support, and also I will be able to grow the thermometer! Keep in mind that ALL donations are tax deductible. I will continue to add more data as soon as I recode the rest of the pages of all the sites to make all the pages work correctly for you. Be sure to send a message if you are experiencing any difficulties by making SURE YOU GIVE ME THE URL that has a problem, and the exact problem you are finding. Each of the pages has now been double checked 4 times but knowing my luck, there are still some glitches! I apologize if this message is a duplicate, just delete it. If you are a list owner or are on a discussion group and this message has not been seen, please feel free to copy and send it. 3. I just discovered something that many of you probably already know. A fellow researcher sent me a copy of a census report by email. It was hard to read and the background was dark. I copied the image into my photo program and enlarged it. Wow, it really was easier to read! The background lightened up and the writing was in much better contrast without me having to change a thing except the percent of the enlargement. I hope this helps someone else. 3. Thank you to Pam, Kaylynn and Catherine for such prompt answers to my question. I KNOW the answer was out there and from the search I made, I just wasn't finding it. Looks like Pam found it at History of Nebraska P.O.'s, and Kaylynn just knew it! I did take another look at the Howard County Historical Society site and didn't see anything. In all my reading about Howard County, I sure didn't recall that St. Libory was formerly Grantville. Thanks, Laura

    1. [NEBRRoots] Maria Patterson Caldwell nee De Marinda
    2. Becky Applegate
    3. Plattsmouth Journal, Monday, July 10, 1916 DEATH OF MRS. F.E. CALDWELL A Member of One of the Best Known Families in Nebraska, and of Royal Blood In the death of Mrs. F.E. CALDWELL at Papillion yesterday, there passed away a lady in whose veins the blood of the royal family of Portugal flowed and who for a number of years resided in Cass county and is numbered among the early settlers of near Rock Bluffs where so many of the pioneer residents of the state first settled. When living in Cass county, Mrs. Caldwell was the wife of Joseph D. PATTERSON, one of the members of this prominent family that has had such a part in the making of the county. After the death of Mr. Patterson, following the removal of the family to Sarpy county, she was married to F.E. CALDWELL, one of the prominent men of that community and for the past forty years they have made their home in Papillion until three years ago when she removed St. Cloud, Florida, but as death drew near Mrs. Caldwell came home to Papillion to spend her last days and made her home with her daughter, Mrs. F.E. NICKERSON, wife of County attorney NICKERSON of Sarpy county. She leaves to mourn her death the husband, and six children, Mrs. John SPEEDIE, Benson; H.D. PATTERSON, county surveyor, Sarpy county; W.E. PATTERSON, Lincoln; Mrs. E.S. NICKERSON, Papillion; Mrs. E.G. FASE and Mrs. W.I. BARBER, Kissimie, Florida. Mrs. Caldwell came to Nebraska in 1869 with her first husband and located at Rock Bluffs. Her life was one that reads like a romance and covers a story of a family of royal descent which found a home on the American continent. Her family spans the gap between the Portuguese throne and a plain Nebraska farm. De Marinda was the family name and there is today a Duke of the Marindas in Portugal. In a former time one of his name set on the throne of that country and this member of the family was a kinsman of Mrs. Caldwell. A brother of this king plotted, was discovered and banished to the Portuguese colony of Brazil. He settled in the state of Parana. After his death the family continued to live on the great plantation. The head of the Marinda family in that country when Mr. Patterson came to Brazil was De Marinda Gibson, an American physician who had settled in South America and through marriage become [sic] the owner of the great plantation. It was on a plantation next to that the De Marinda family that Mr. Patterson and his wife settled and shortly afterwards the first Mrs. Patterson died and two years later Patterson was united in marriage to Maria De Marinda, then 17 years of age, this wedding occurring in 1868. In 1869, the desire for the home grew on Mr. Patterson and he came north and located at Rock Bluffs where the family resided until removing to Sarpy county. This lady was a relative by marriage of the Patterson family of this county and is well known to a great many of the earlier residents. 3. Most of us are always trying to find existing genealogy records--here's a chance to create some yourself. Since it's just been Veterans' Day, why not go to the National WW2 Memorial Web site and create a record or records for your WW2 vets, living or deceased? I bet future genealogists will thank you just as we thank past census takers, court house record keepers, etc. Perhaps we can get Nebraska vets the most registered! http://www.wwiimemorial.com/default.asp?page=registry.asp&subpage=intro Kent Christensen Albuquerque, NM USA Christensen/Christoffersen: ?? -> Lancaster Co., NE, USA Pedersen (Peterson): Hjorring -> Sarpy Co., NE, USA
