    1. [NEBRRoots] Hot off the press
    2. Today at the class in Omaha, the new book/calendar 365+1 Genealogy Tips was introduced. It's how-to tips and hints to make searching easier, or more effective on a wide variety of research topics. It's being sponsored by the Greater Omaha Genealogical Society and all moneys made beyond the cost of publication will be used to buy more materials for the genealogy department at the W. Dale Clark Library. It's the size of a quarter page, spiral bound and goes through half the year, then turns over and comes back through the second half of the year, with a tip for each day--including leap year which is why the "plus one." No year is mentioned so that it is useable any year. If you are possibly interested in getting a copy, you can contact me or Mavmom@aol.com about price & postage/handling. If you live in the Omaha area, we can set up an appointment to deliver to you. The books can also be purchased at a G.O.G.S. meeting (3rd Wednesdays at New Cassel Retirement Center), or at one of the genealogy classes on 3rd Saturdays at the Mormon Trail Center. (We're hoping for a runaway genealogy best seller, so we can get lots more materials for the genealogy department.) Karen

    1. [NEBRRoots] free class in Omaha on Saturday
    2. Greater Omaha Genealogical Society has been doing a genealogy class series now for the past six years. Our first class of the seventh year will be held Saturday, Jan 17 at the Mormon Trail Center in Omaha. Genealogy basics and getting started is the initial topic. Class will start at 9:00 am. If you know anybody who wants to get started, let them know so they can sign up. We have to have pre-registration as some years we've had over 100 sign up...and don't want to come up way short on the handouts. (That's also why we're holding them at the Trail Center, since the largest library class room only holds 50.) They can sign up at Genclass@aol.com, or by calling Sandy at 344-2887 or Merrily at 706-1453. If there's questions, they can get answers there too. If you live in a reasonable driving distance, get a carload and come down together. Some are signing up several with one email, then carpooling. There will be some tours available at the library afterwards for those who want to go downtown. I'd hate to have people come up three monts into the series saying, "I didn't know those were going on." It's happened before. Press releases were sent to over 26 area newspapers, but we know that papers print what they want, when they want because press releases aren't like paid advertising, and as a non-profit, there's not money to advertise in papers since the classes are free. Also available at the class: the new, hot of the press 365 +1 Genealogy Tips. Any profit from sales of this calendar type book will purchase more genealogy materials for the W. Dale Clark library. Karen PS: Don't forget that for 2004, $1 will be donated to the library for funeral cards/memorial programs (up to $100 month for those we don't already have in the collection)from the funerals of anyone you might happen to know...especially old ones, so dig out your collection and get us copies, or an extra--if you have duplicates. We got one envelope in the mail this month with 200...most of them from the Loup City area of Nebraska. They're being indexed & filed now, so aren't yet available. Microfilm marriage records of Washington, Adams, & Hall counties in Nebraska are being added to the Omaha collection as a result. (We have Douglas through abt 1942 & Sarpy co marriages--first reel.)

    1. [NEBRRoots] free genealogy classes
    2. Do you know where YOUR family was when Lewis and Clark headed up the Missouri River in 1804? The 7th Annual Beginning Genealogy Workshop Series presented by the Greater Omaha Genealogical Society and the Omaha Public Library History and Social Science Department begins Saturday January 17 and over the next six months, you can learn how to find out where your family was and what they were doing. Because the classes outgrew the largest available classroom in the library system (maximum 50 people), we were very glad to take the folks at the Mormon Trail Center, 3215 State Steet, in Omaha up on their offer to use their conference center for the classes where several hundred people can be accomodated when necessary. (It's the same place the annual Gingerbread Parade was held.) Each third Saturday morning a different class is held from nine to approximately noon. The classes are FREE, but pre-registration IS REQUIRED so we know how many handouts to prepare. You may register via email: Genclass@aol.com, or by calling Sandy at 344-2887 or Merrily at 706-12453. The classes are as follows: Jan 17: Genealogy Basics: an introduction to the nuts & bolts of genealogy research. Where do you start researching your family? Feb 21: Learn How to Find Vital Records and Substitutes for vital records that will give the dates & places for births, marriages and deaths for the people in your family. Mar 20: It makes sense to use the census. Learn how to use the federal censuses to identify family members and origins from 1930 through 1790. The collection of census reels at the W. Dale Clark Library is one of Omaha's best kept secrets: did you know that there is half of the over 15,000 released census reels there to use, and about 2/3 of the states are complete through at least 1900. April 17: Using timelines to place your ancestors in historical context and to determine what historical events might have generated records that include your ancestors. Part 2: The Name Game: A discussion of names, variations, naming patterns, and strategies for finding the missing ancestors when you can't find them under the name that you think they should be using. May 15: National and International Research in Primary Record Sources without leaving Omaha. Use the resources available through the nearest LDS Family History Center. www.familysearch.org is just the tip of the iceburg. June 19: Naturalization records: What kinds of information might be found in naturalization records, and how can you locate your ancestor in them. Not usually taught in the beginner series, because these records are sometimes difficult to track down. Part 2: Other Record Repositories: We'll discuss the National Archives, Historical Societies, Courthouses and lots of other places to search for your ancestors. Attend one class or all of them, but again, you must pre-register. Hope to see you there.
