    1. [NEBRRoots] Genealogy class Feb 21
    2. The next beginning genealogy class offered by the Greater Omaha Genealogy Society and the W. Dale Clark Library will be February 21. The topic will be Vital records (what you can expect, or hope, to find in them) and Substitutes for Vital Records, for when vital records weren't kept. The class will be held at the Mormon Trail Center, since we outgrew the largest classroom at the library. Time is 9:00 AM to Noon. Classes are free, but we ask that people pre-register so that we know how many are coming. (We've had over 100 at times, and would hate to plan for only 50 handouts.) Pre registrations are through Genclass@aol.com, or 706-1453, or 344-2887. If you live within driving distance, get a bunch of friends and come together. Then have lunch and spend the rest of the day at the downtown library, doing research. Hopefully the weather will be decent that weekend (last year we got snowed out and had to do a makeup session.) March's class will be on the census and milking it for every clue you can find.

    1. [NEBRRoots] State conference coming up.
    2. The Nebraska State Genealogical Society Conference April 30 & May 1 will be in Omaha this year at the Ramada on 72nd. (You might want to think about coming in a day early to do library research as an idea as well. The library is no longer open on Sundays because of budget cuts.) Dr. George Schweitzer is the keynote speaker for five of the talks and he does them as a historical reenactment, very knowledgeable, very entertaining, very funny at times as well. His topics: English Genealogical Research, Tracing Ancestors Back Across the Atlantic, North-South Colonial Migration Routes, Cherokee Genealogical Research (because we keep getting requests for those wanting Native American help and Cherokee is probably the most prevalent request), and Rivers to Trails to Roads to Canals to Trains. We also have a presentation on preservation of our family heirlooms from the Stuhr Museum, and from Jeff Kappeler from the Nebraska Humanities group is doing a presentation on what our ancestors would have brought with them as they immigrated. People who attended the conference last year will get flyers, as will all the Nebraska genealogy societies, western Iowa, and some of the SD, MO & KS societies that aren't very far away. For any out there that weren't in Hastings last year for Cindi Howells, you can email pmasek@cox.net and ask for a flyer(s) to be sent. They'll be going out in the next couple days...so contact her right away if you want a conference flyer. You don't need to be a member of the Nebraska State Genealogical Society to attend the conference, but it is a bit cheaper if you are. Karen

    1. [NEBRRoots] new films at the W. Dale Clark Library
    2. I just took 212 new films down to the W. Dale Clark library this evening. It will take several days for them to be catalogued and out to use, but by this time next week they should be available. California is now complete through 1900, as is Mississippi. Vermont is nearly complete through 1900 (couple of back orders). TX is missing a couple in 1880 backordered, but will be complete through that year, with about half to 2/3 of the reels actually here. Completing reels for MO 1910 & 1920 came in and the rest of 1930 is on order. Idaho 1930, IN 1920, and a reel missing from 1910 MT are now completed. Several reels from 1900 IL and WI were received as well, though those two states aren't up to half yet. If you're interested, you can contact me with specific questions as to what is here, as it will take a bit for the web site to be updated as well. Also, 35 reels of Rev War Pension & Bounty Land applications are here. If you're looking for a Miller, everything in the two main microfilm collections for this period is here. Several reels are for "A", "B", "G" and other surnames are here as well. Again, if you're wondering if we would have what you might be looking for, contact me. We've also had several boxes of really good books donated recently and those will soon be available...some marriage records from Hall county NE on microfilm will be coming in a couple months, and some more materials from Lancaster co, PA will be coming before summer. There may not be any budget to speak of (but they can find 3/4 of a million to pay a football coach to go away???), but those of us who use the facility are donating some good things--and we'll all find more ancestors. Karen

    1. [NEBRRoots] New IA-CZECHS list
    2. I am happy to announce a new list at Rootsweb! I know NEBRRoots is a Nebraska list but many folks have CZECH families that came to Nebraska from Iowa so this list may be of interest. 1. Re: [NEBRRoots] Dimmett (Dimmitt)
    2. Dimmett family from the 1880 census: Edwin, age 44, farmer born in Ohio, father Va, mother Ohio Anna: wife, 35?, keeping house, born IL, father OH, mother IL Lincoln, 16, farmer, b IL, father OH, mother IL Minerva?, 11, dau, at school, b IL, (parents as above) Cora, 4, dau, b IL, (parents as above) Jesse, 1, dau, b NE, (parents as above) Very interesting that just above the family is the family of James Dimmett 66, farmer born in VA, father MD, mother VA Sarah, 61, wife, keeping house, b Oh parents in VA Wm Henry 22, son, farmer, b IL, parents in Va & Oh Rich, Edwin, 24, nephew, farmer b IL, father OH, mother OH Dimmett Hardon, 22, nephew, farmer, b IL, father Va, mother IL You might want to check the 1885 census in Cass county for this family as well. And since the ancestry.com indexes show a bunch of other Dimmetts in Cass county, you may want to just go to the nearest Family History Center or library where you can access the reel for Cass county, and go through it very carefully as the entire family may have moved there. With Edwin showing up in several families, one might suspect that somebody else's father/grandfather is also an Edwin. Good luck with your searches. Karen

    1. [NEBRRoots] Calling all McQuillans or descendants
    2. BP Patea
    3. I am trying to locate decendants of Hugh McQuillan and Ann Carey. Hugh immigrated to Omaha, Douglas, Nebraska around 1880 from Antrim Ireland, via Quebec Canada. Hugh and Ann were married in 1888 in Douglas and had two children that I know of Rose and Alvin, obviously born post 1888. Hugh parents were Rose and John and his siblings were Patrick, James, Robert, Ellen, Bridget, Susan, Mary, Rose (Hugh) and Anne. All born between 1835 and 1853 in Glenravel, Antrim, Northern Ireland. Robert was my GGGrandfather and immigrated to NZ in 1862. The other siblings immigrated to Canada also, most stayed but two went on to Montana and Kansas. If any of this sounds even vaguely similar I would love to here from you. Cheers, Olivia, New Zealand
