Nebraska is celebrating its 137th birthday. It was the 37th state admitted to the union, March 1, 1867. The name Nebraska is derived from a Native American word meaning flat water. The state flower is the goldenrod; state bird, the western meadowlark; state insect, the honeybee; state mammal, the whitetail deer; state tree, the cottonwood; and state fossil, the mammoth. Happy Birthday Nebraska! Thanks, Kathie Harrison Ancestor's Sharing Center - NEGenWeb Project http://www.rootsweb.com/~neasc/index.htm

I have a puzzle I need help with. 1920 Plattsmouth, Cass Co. census shows Donald C. Warner as the son of Charles H. & Barbara Warner. Familysearch shows Donald Charles Warner as the son of Frederick Marion Warner (a son of Charles & Barbara) & Donald's mother as Bonnie M. Robinson. I realize that Donald may be a grandson of Charles & Barbara. Frederick died in 1928, but I can't find any record that shows Frederick, Bonnie, & Donald as a family. Donald was born 19 July 1911 & died 19 July 1938. I don't see any way to sort this out except with an obit on Donald or contact with any descendants he might have. Anyone have any info? Thanks, Kris in IL

Photos from the 1951 Echo Yearbook for Lincoln Cathedral High School have been added to the schools section of the Lancaster County, NEGenWeb Project. The Lincoln Cathedral High School no longer exists, having closed its doors in 1955 after the school year. Pius X High School opened its doors in 1956 to take the Cathedral High School's place. "Keep all notes from the same geoagraphic location together, even if they apply to different families. If your notebook or file folder is clearly labeled as to where the material is from, it will be less confusing than if you mix geographic areas. And document those sources as you go." This is one of the Tips from 365+1 Genealogy Tips which is being sold by Greater Omaha Genealogical Society to raise money for census film at the local public library. We're getting close to having our 11th state complete through 1930, and we have 30 states complete through 1900...not bad for 8 years of work when we started with less than 1000 reels of microfilm...and now have over half of the 15,000+ reels of released federal film. The book is in a semi-calendar form, with a tip for every day, plus leap year. It's a generic calendar, with no year, or day of the week attached so it can be used and reused. While some of the tips may be well known to people who've done genealogy for years, there's even things that the well experienced may not have yet tried--and it's a real help to the beginner. There's room to make notes on which ancestors you might want to apply some of the tips on, in an effort to learn more about them. While it is being sold at Winter Quarters Bookstore in Omaha, more of money is generated for the film project by purchasing directly from the Society. Email Mavmom18@aol.com for price & postage costs if you think you might be interested. These will also be available at the Nebraska State Genealogical Society Conference in Omaha April 30 & May 1. Working together so we all find more ancestors. Karen

The next beginning genealogy class offered by the Greater Omaha Genealogy Society and the W. Dale Clark Library will be February 21. The topic will be Vital Information from Vital Records (what you can expect, or hope, to find in them) and Substitutes for Vital Records, for those times when vital records weren't kept. The free class will be held at the Mormon Trail Center, since we outgrew the largest classroom at the library. Time is 9:00 AM to Noon. Classes are free, but we ask that people pre-register so that we know how many are coming. (We've had over 100 at times, and would hate to plan for only 50 handouts.) Pre registrations are through Genclass@aol.com, or 706-1453, or 344-2887. If you live within driving distance, get a bunch of friends and come together. Then have lunch and spend the rest of the day at the downtown library, doing research. Hopefully the weather will be decent that weekend (last year we got snowed out and had to do a makeup session...and hope it doesn't happen again this year.) March's class will be on the census and milking it for every clue you can find. Karen

Hi all, I may have found the ship that my Great Grandparents James FLINN (later changed to FLYNN) and Jane Frances WYBRANT family arrived on. There are three other Flinn's on the ship that do not fit into my known family. They may have been relatives but don't know. Anyway, here's the data that came up. They first settled in McDonough County Illinois where they can be found in the 1850 Census. Between 1870 and 1880 they had moved to Missouri and about 1881 moved to Nebraska. I have marked the birth dates that I had in parenthesis behind the information. Three children are not on it nor should they be. They are Thomas, b. 1846 d. 1847 in Ireland; James b. 1851 Illinois; Mary b. 1853 d. 1853 Illinois. It really looks pretty promising with all the names and approximate ages accounted for on the one ship. If anyone has any data on the other 3 Flinn's please feel free to contact me and see if there are any matchups. Jane Frances WYBRANT was born in Sheeanamore, County Wicklow, Ireland. To my knowledge the children on the ship were from the Dublin area. Unknown exactly where James FLYNN was born. >From http://www.advertiser-tribune.com/edit/story/0128202004_edtedit0128.asp Wednesday, January 28, 2004 - Time: 12:01:51 AM EST Terrorism concerns put crimp on records Big Brother may not be watching you - but he's going to make it difficult for you to peek into the lives of your ancestors if they happened to be Ohioans. Access to documents such as birth and death records is being restricted by Buckeye State officials who claim they are acting against terrorists and other criminals. And, by the way, it is going to become much more expensive for you to obtain copies of such records. It is an open records issue not likely to be taken on by the press - reporters are more interested in how much money your county commissioners spent on travel last year than on learning the names of their great-great-grandparents - but it is, nevertheless, unacceptable. Officials say easy access to old records makes it easier for identity theft criminals to operate. And, they say, it helps terrorists establish false identities. Perhaps so, but those bent on obtaining the information they need for such misdeeds won't even be slowed down by the new rules. They will find other ways to get the information. Historians and genealogists, most of them amateurs who just want to know more about their ancestors, will be handicapped severely, however. Some simply will not be able to afford the new fees state officials say will be imposed. According to one news story on the changes, "photocopies that once cost as little as 25 cents per page must now be obtained by formal request at $15 or more per page." It gets worse: The state Department of Health is considering whether to confiscate some collections of records held by libraries, historical societies and genealogy groups. It all is an unnecessary restriction of the rights of Ohioans to learn about their own history, sometimes their own families - and they shouldn't stand for it.
Sorry, folks! I goofed. Frederick Warner was b. 1886, NOT 1866 like I typed. Kris

Looking for info/descendants of Frederick Marion Warner, son of Charles H. Warner & Barbara Ellen Wiles Warner. Fred was b. 9-2-1866 in Plattsmouth, Cass Co., NE. He died on 7-16-1928. According to Familysearch, he was married to Bonnie M. Robinson & they had a son, Donald Charles Warner. Donald was b. 7-19-1911 & died 7-19-1938. What puzzles me is that I can't find Frederick anywhere in 1920 census & Donald is listed as the son of Charles & Barbara Warner in the 1920 census. Also can't find Donald in the 1930 census. Any ideas out there? Does anyone know this family? Thanks, Kris in IL
