    1. LLCGS - Change of topic for the July 13, 2004 meeting (Nebraska)
    2. Hi all -- I just found out about this change! LLCGS (Lincoln-Lancaster County Genealogical Society - Nebraska) has had a change for the July meeting! Sorry about the mixup! They have changed the program for July 13, 2004. We decided to substitute a speaker who has been cancelled twice already because of weather and administrative foul-up last year. She is Barbara Sommer, a genuine expert in all aspects of "Oral History". She will be talking to us about taking and recording oral histories of family members etc. The wife of the current Secretary of the Nebraska State Historical Society Board, she knows and often gets involved in Nebraska's history projects, but she has 25 years experience in the field and during this time has participated in other states' and national projects and authored numerous publications. Meetings are at 7:15 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month in the Amphitheater, Dick Administration Bldg., Union College, 3800 S. 48th St., Lincoln, NE. http://www.rootsweb.com/~nellcgs/index.htm Thank you, Kathie Harrison Lancaster Co., NEGenWeb Project http://www.rootsweb.com/~nelancas/index.html

    1. Last free genealogy class for the 2004 season in Omaha
    2. This Saturday is the last of the 7th annual genealogy workshop series offered by Greater Omaha Genealogical Society and the W. Dale Clark Library History Social Science Department. We will be discussing naturalization records, what, where, why, etc. Second part is on other record sources that might have information on our families and how to access this information. Pre-registration requested so that we can have enough handouts for everybody. You can email your plan to attend: genclass@aol.com or by calling 706-1453, or 344-2887. These workshops are free to the public. 9:00 to approximately noon, held at the Mormon Trail Center, 3215 State Street in Omaha. (They offered to let us use their classroom because we outgrew the largest library classroom which only holds 50 people, and we've had over 100 at times.) COMING THIS FALL: Tentatively, we are planning to bring in John Phillip Colletta on October 30. This will be a pay-for workshop, but details are being worked out. If you are interested in attending or just want more information, you can also email Genclass@aol.com. There will be a discounted price for early registrations, and for members of the Greater Omaha Genealogical Society. We are making plans for a spring workshop as well similar to the October one. Members will be automatically updated in the Society newsletter. (The new fiscal year begins in July, so memberships are being accepted now. Price for membership has not gone up since the Society was started.)

    1. New to the W. Dale Clark Library yesterday
    2. 31 new films went down: mostly census from MN & OK, but there was some 1900 IL & 2 reels of OH, and if you have the current census listings, cross off 1870 & 1880 VT "except..." because they are now complete, as is 1900 MS. There were also a couple reels of 1890 NY. The other reel that went down was one of the St Albans VT immigration records, bringing the holdings to about four reels. There were two books also: Clarkson NE Centennial, with a lot of good pictures and family items, and Hx of Rural Education in Richardson Co., NE with lists of teachers, school board members, photographs of many of the classes. It will take several days for most of these to get processed with labels, etc, but they'll be there. Karen

    1. Today at the Swanson Library--90 & Dodge Omaha
    2. Our Federal Census Helper has all of the questions the census taker asked our ancestor from 1790 through 1930 on a color, 2 sided, laminated sheet, punched for a 3 ring binder. Several people have told us they're wonderful to help in searching the census because you just count over the number of columns on the census you're looking at and then check out the number of columns on the census helper...no more squinting to read the words at the top of the page when the ancestor in question as at the bottom. Works equally well whether reading censuses on microfilm, or on the computer...especially when the filming wasn't the best. ALL proceeds from these sales go to buy more census microfilm at the library. We also have a supply of 365+1 Genealogy Tips. There is a tip for every day of the year, plus leap year...some for beginners, some for advanced researchers. Some you might have known and forgotten. Some have told us they put sticky notes on the pages to remind them to use a particular tip in trying to locate a particular ancestor (although there's room that you could write on the page.) All money generated beyond actual printing costs go to buy census microfilm for the W. Dale Clark Library. Just a quick update--12 states are complete through 1930, the completing reels for the 13th state have been ordered. 30 states have reels in place or ordered to be complete through 1900, and two more are getting close. MN is getting very close to being done through 1930--need mostly Hennepin & Ramsey counties got 1930. OK still has reels missing for 1920 & 1930, but about half of them are done through 1930. With the exception of Nebraska and 1930 Iowa, all of this has been done with donations--and projects like the above. The Friends of the OPL have allowed the Greater Omaha Genealogical Society to set up a table at their quarterly book sale at Swanson because we're all working to help the library. If you're interested in either of the two products, drop by and see us. We can also fill you in on the two conferences we're planning for October and March. Hope to see some of you there. Karen

    3. The products sound really neat, and I'd sure love to see them. Unfortunately, it's a little hard to "drop by" from 1500 miles away! Perhaps at some point they might consider putting these kinds of things on a web page for sale on the Internet? 3. Hi, There's a new page of Buffalo County, Nebraska, obituary extracts. These are from mid-May through mid-June, 2004. As always, the easiest way to see what's new on the Buffalo County NEGenWeb Project site, is to go to the main page, and click on Recent Changes. http://www.rootsweb.com/~nebuffal/ Mona Meadowlark7@juno.com Buffalo Co. 2. Mona Houser
    3. Early this morning I added the Pleasanton Cemetery inventory to the Buffalo County NEGenWeb site. This is from the book published by the Fort Kearny Genealogical Society in 1986. I appreciate allowing these records to be posted on-line. If any of you are able to supply a photo or an updated inventory, please contact me. Thanks! Go to the Buffalo County NEGenWeb home page, URL shown in my signature line, then click on RECENT CHANGES for the link. Or on the home page, you can scroll down to Cemeteries in the left-hand green menu. I believe that all the Bufalo County cemetery inventories (at least up to about 1980) are now on-line except for Gibbon Riverside and Elm Creek City. I'm hoping that I'll be able to get that information and get it posted before the summer is over. The city of Kearney has their burial records on-line at http://www.cityofkearney.org/index.asp?SID=135 Enjoy! Mona Meadowlark7@juno.com Buffalo Co. 3. Dear Listers: Would someone have any information on a Lillian "Lilly" Jane Bruce and husband John Bruce? I would like to know if there is an obituary for either of them. John Bruce died 1910 Verdigre, Knox Co. Ne. and Lillian died 1918 Verdigre, Knox Co. Ne. I don't know what cemetery they are buried in. Nor do I have the day, or month of their deaths. I would appreciate any help. Thank you very much. Hal Hatcher Co. 3. Hi This is to announce that another Buffalo county cemetery is on-line -- St. Mary's Catholic of Prairie Center. 1. Computer crash...please resend anything you've sent me for posting. (Cedar Co., NE)
    2. Kristi B. Lam
    3. If anyone has sent me articles, photos, or anything else that is not already posted to the Cedar County NE sites or to the NEGenWeb Cemetery site, please resend it to me at: mailto:kristilam@comcast.net I've been having problems with some programs, so my husband agreed to rebuild my computer this past week. He backed everything up, and then simultaneously wiped out my computer AND the back up copy. So I'm starting from scratch. If you don't see it on-line already, I no longer have it...including email addresses to contact you. I apologize for the inconvenience and additional delay in getting your items posted. I'm trying to look for the silver lining...like I no longer have hundreds of emails I've saved from the past several years that need sorting through. I consoled myself with a big pan of frosted brownies and now I'm ready to dig in and start gathering everything again. Kristi Lam

    1. Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Buffalo County, Nebraska
    2. Mona Houser
    3. Thanks to Michele, there are photos and transcriptions of tombstones for over 200 graves in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery. When the church was founded, it had a Watertown mailing address, but when that post office was closed, it became rural Amherst. I mention both names because sometimes in familiy records you may find the name of one or the other towns. The church, located in Scott Twp., was founded in 1882 by German settlers, and the graves date from about that time to the present. It is still an active cemetery though the church is no longer in existence. When the rural population declined in the 1970's and '80's, they merged with Trinity Lutheran, a daughter congregation, in the town of Amherst. The records are kept at the Amherst location. Michele has a number of ancestors buried at Immanuel, and her work of photographing and transcribing the tombstones is a wonderful help to all of the rest of us who have relatives buried there. The Immanuel cemetery page also includes the surnames and maiden names of all the known graves there as of about 1986. So if you find a name in that list that you want more information about, please contact me at the address in my signature line, and I'll be happy to do a look-up for you. As always, the easiest way to see the latest additions to the Buffalo County NEGenWeb Project site is to go to the home page and click on Recent Changes. <a href="http://www.rootsweb.com/~nebuffal/"> http://www.rootsweb.com/~nebuffal/</a> Mona Meadowlark7@juno.com Buffalo Co. 1. Re: [NEBRRoots] Funeral Cards are now on the Lancaster County, Nebraska web s...
    2. Reminder, that G.O.G.S. is collecting funeral cards for the W. Dale Clark Library in Omaha, and we have a donor that is offering $1 to the library for up to 100 different ones donated each month during this year. Things that are, or are going to be available at the library are Hall county marriages on microfilm, Washington county marriages on microfilm, several new books from PA, TN, MD & NC. The funeral cards can be from anywhere, need not have an Omaha connection. And as long as one for the same person isn' t already in the collection, it counts. So while you're making copies for Lincoln, send us some too. Greater Omaha Genealogy Society P O Box 4011 Omaha, NE 68104 Karen
