    1. Pages from an old Nebraska Ledger
    2. Tempe Berggren
    3. Hello Nebraska! I thought it would be fun to share a little bit of history that we have. A store ledger from 1889 and 1890 was used by my husband's grandmother to store old recipes. She cut them out and pasted them over the pages that itemized the purchases of the day. The information under those recipes, when I can lift them, may be of interest to some of you. As an example I will list information from one of the pages, but please keep in mind that it is sometimes hard to interpret the handwriting. Some customers were businesses - even Nemaha City, Nemaha School District, and the Poor Farm. If there is interest I'd be glad to list other names - probably without their purchases unless there is a specific request. Sept. 18th 1889 J. B. Farmer cr by 5 chickens cr by 1-1/2 bu potatoes R. The facts are, however, that I have a friend who has been very successful in obtaining information through Mr Dominguez and the Dept of Social Services about his own adoption for a fee of about $45. He was given all the information allowable to an adoptee by the State of Nebraska, which included "identifying information" about his birth mother, her parents, how many siblings she had, her occupation, even her father's surname (which you could then conclude was her surname also). I assume you talking monuments as in "gravestones" in cemeteries. The VA can't find my records from 1971, GOOD LUCK on finding records that were sent to the federal archives 85 or 90 years ago. You're going to have to know where this soldiers records where, because each VA facility sends records to a federal archive center in there area, and only that facility has knowledge of where the records were archived. US Army records for that period have been combined, but VA records are different. 2. If she wants to research the information about her adoption, I'd suggest the following: Contact: Jerry Dominguez, Dept of Social Services, 301 Centennial Mall South, Lincoln, NE 68509. He does adoption records searches for Nebraska adoptions but will only make a search for authorized persons, being the adoptee themselves with positive ID. Or, I'd suggest that you write to the Grand Island Genealogical Society for the obituary of a "Mrs Sorenson" for the December date and you could probably get info that way as well. 2. On Dec 01,1926, Pansy Sorenson was born in Grand Island ,Nebraska. Her mother died at her birth and she was put up for adoption thru the Nebraska Childerns Home in Omaha I am told that it was a very large family and the father could not care for another child, so he made that decision. She has never made any attempt to locate any of her birth family, and knows only the name Sorensen. She must have some living brothers and sisters out there somewhere. It would be interesting to make contact with some of the family. If you have any infomation, please contact Donald E Cox. COXDE@aol.com

My grandmother Georgia Sanders, born in Stockville, we have much on her family. I still have cousins living in Frontier County. If you have not tried this already, Rootsweb's NEGenWeb, has much helpful information posted. The URL is: <http://www.rootsweb.com/~nefronti/> This is the home page, just click on Resources. I don't know if the specific family members that you mentioned are there, as I just took a brief glance, but there are many DRAKE and MILLER burial and marriage records posted there. And, if you need help, host Chris Christensen is most helpful, just E-mail him at his address posted there. I haven't posted to the list before, but I hope you find this helpful. I found many of my family and their friends there. I don't know about the cemetery on the Welch farm, however. It was there that I learned that my great-grandmother went by "Libbie" rather than Elizabeth. And now all these old letters written by or to Libbie take on a whole new meaning.

    1. Seward Co. birth certificate questions & CAREY family name
    2. Brian & Therese
    3. Hi, I'm new to this list and was wondering if somebody could answer a few questions for me about Nebraska's criteria for obtaining birth/death certificates. I just found out that my great grandmother(Daisy Belle CAREY b. Jan. 20, 1878) and several of her siblings were born in Seward Co., NE. So here are my questions: 1) When I went to the Vital Statistics page, they said that you had to have a copy of a photo ID, who the person is in regard to yourself(has to be immediate family it said), and their signature to be able to obtain the certificate. Now, how does that work for those people who are trying to research their long dead ancestors? 2) The Seward Co. web page didn't say when the Court house began keeping records. Does anybody know? I'm looking for birth certificates from 1869 on up. 3) The family I'm looking for is the Harvey G. and Rebecca A. (HARSHBARGER) CAREY family. They left Sidney, Shelby Co., OH to homestead in NE. They eventually returned to Sidney, Shelby Co., OH(Carey's are big in Shelby Co.). They had 7 children(in no particular order): Berta, Elta, Jason, Clarence, Edward, Samuel, and Daisy. I think I found them in the 1870 Seward Co. Census, but they are listed as COREY, and some of the info doesn't match what I have(no surprise). Does anybody have the 1880 Census of NE or Seward Co., or the index, that would be willing to tell me if they were still there. I have checked OH and they were not there in 1880. 4) Harvey had to have signed papers for the land they were farming. Does anybody know where I would go to find these? Any help in answering these questions would be greatly appreciated. I am going to visit my parents(they live near Sioux City, SD) next week, and we were thinking of making a run down to Seward. If anybody has any suggestions as to good places to check out while we are there, please let me know. Thanks again, Therese < blockery@coredcs.com >
