The coordinator is gone at moment because of a death in the family, but should be back next week. If you would like to see what she has done so far, you can find it at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~neresour/resource.html Look for the section called "Ancestor's Lost and Found". Did you have a specific date for the death? If you know the death date within a minimal time frame, they can look it up and get a copy for you. They don't have the staff for extensive research if you don't have a target date for them to check around, however. The library does have an obit file that has Omaha World Herald obit clippings primarily from about mid-'80's to present time. G.O.G.S. volunteers & the D.A.R. have been busy clipping & filing. There are scattered references before then from the World Herald and a few other papers, but nothing comprehensive. Address your follow-up: Attn: Tom Heenan. He's the head of the History- Soc/Science department. He can check on it for you. If you do not have a date for them to check, Greater Omaha Genealogical Society will do research for $10/hr. Their address is PO Box 4011, Omaha, NE 68104. Their volunteers do have the time to do a longer search, but it will help if you can narrow it down to a few years, since newspaper microfilms will have to be searched. Also, next Tuesday I will be getting some boxes with deaths notices from the late 1800's (I understand there are about 3 years worth--not all of these will have obits, as they didn't come from the newspaper.) I will post the info as to what years are involved when I get it so that you can send an inquiry if the dates match any of your people. (I know--this is getting long) You might also be interested in knowing that some of us are starting a project to index the Omaha World Herald death notices. (The index will only include the Greater Omaha area, unless it specifically states that the person was from the Omaha area originally...Douglas, Sarpy, Pottawatamie co IA--type thing.) Margaret Forsythe will be doing the 1950's; my aunt & I will do the 1940's. Two others will be picking up additional decades when they finish moving, vacations, etc. It will be awhile before we get much done on these, but we will keep you updated as it goes along. Presently, there is no index for these years, and the SSDeath index doesn't pick up many that early...not computerized, or something. We will work our way back in history...we have all of the World Herald on microfilm...and if we aren't burned out by then, will try the other historic Omaha papers, we have most of them on micro as well. We had played with Sep of 1900 to see whether we ought to start with 1900 or not. Deaths seem to have been picked up from across the country via wire service or something such, as few were Omaha area for the 3 weeks we worked on. (Murders from all across the country, soldier death lists, Galveston TX disaster death lists, etc.) Plus, they weren't all in one spot in the paper as they have been since the 20's...much slower to sift through all the pages. So we are starting with the easiest stuff first...so we can make more available faster. Karen
Sent a letter requesting an obit to the public library in June, no response yet. Anyone have any experience with a timeline from this library? I sent a check, SASE, along with my request. Going on three months now, should I be patient or start a follow-up? Arlis Anderson Renfro

Since they haven't answered your letter one way or another, I think I would call them. Here is their number: 402-444-4800. They also have a web page and it is at: http://www.omaha.lib.ne.us/webpac Their online catalog can be searched at this site. If you don't have any luck with them, The Greater Omaha Genealogical Society will research indexed materials for a small fee. Do you know where your party was buried? If at Forest Lawn you can call them and they will search their files for whatever records they might have. In some cases they have filed obituaries. Richard F. MESSAGE FROM ROOTSWEB: We're preparing for the latest upgrade to the GenConnect System. There's a few things you need to know about this upgrade ..... The entire GenConnect system will be upgraded starting at midnight on Saturday September 5, 1998. This will require that we shut the system down. The reason is twofold ..... it's not just a patch .... it's a re-write of the program that runs the system. Also, the Global Search engine has been revamped and mega-enhanced, which will require a total rebuild. No new postings can be allowed during this rebuilding period. Downtime is estimated to be 8 hours max (yep .... it's a huge system now!). Anyone attempting to use the system during this downtime will be given notice that it's being upgraded .... no-one will be left in the dark. However, you could help us make this a smoother transition if you would spread the word on any and all of the major mailing lists that you may be subbed to (ROOTS-l, xxROOTS-L, your county lists, surname lists, etc.). Will you help us by doing this? Below are some of the new features that the latest version (1.10) will contain. Please feel free to include those items listed as 'Visitor Toys' in any announcement you make. This is the most exciting version of genbbs yet, and we're thrilled to be bringing it into production. I encourage anyone with questions about the conversion to sub to the GenConnect-L list, if you're not already. Simply send an email to GenConnect-L-request@rootsweb.com with the word subscribe in both the subject and as the only word in the body. Turn off all signature files, please. Once again ..... the upgrade will begin at midnight on Saturday, Sep 5, and should take no more than 8 hours. Please help us announce this. There will be no official notice once the conversion is completed. The new version will be in effect for all to see, and will serve as notice. This is just the latest improvement, and we've all anxiously awaited this moment. Happy Hunting!!!! The GenConnect Team ..... Randy, Pam and Nancy List of new GenConnect Features: Visitor Toys: ------------------- Separate entry fields for subject and surnames ..... allows more descriptive subjects (non-surname words won't matter) Main page of each board displays the list of surnames for each query, in addition to the subject .... allows for more surnames to be entered 'Print' option now expanded to include the entire thread (user's option) Surname page will be auto-generated, and auto-updated weekly (more frequently with admin intervention), and will now be alphabetized and hotlinked to the query in which it appears. Cookie support expanded to include "date ranges". Faster, sleeker search engine. Multiple-word surnames supported - including the capability of searching for them. New search options added to the Global Search ..... soundex (enhanced over previous version), partial word match, whole word match, wildcard searching.

Your interest in the old ledger that our family has encouraged me to do a bit more searching on the web. Rootsweb.com has a Nebraska business directory on line that was published in 1890. Looking through Nemaha county cities I found Nemaha City was included. Guess what business was identified in that directory?! None other than the Aynes Bros. hardware, furniture, implts - so now we know the store the ledger pertains to, and I have a much better idea of where Norman's greatgrandfather, William Aynes was living in 1890, and we know that he and his brother Andrew, ran this business. I was never certain before which line the ledger belonged to. :) Tempe Berggren

What I know is this Meeks L Mann born 04 Aug 1845 GA died 04 March 1895 (Grave #345) His wife was Nancy A (Molly) Murphy Mann born 1838 AL died?? my great-greatgrandmother was Mary Elizabeth Mann Warren Hancock She was born 14 Nov 1871 AL and died 07 Mar 1937 Little Rock and is buried in Oakland Cemetery. I have a copy of her obituary and it listed the following brothers/sisters: P M Mann living in Artesia NM F Mann living in Mutin KS Mrs. Robert Mann and Mrs. J R Mann both living in Little Rock (her sisters had married cousins. The 1880 AL Cullman County census listed children of Meeks and Nancy as Mary Elizabeth; Philip and Penelope) I had originally looked at the Ida Mission Cemetery listing my great- grandfather, David Franklin Warren, who was Mary Elizabeth's first husband and is suppose to be buried there. I think he died between 1896-1899. (Mary Elizabeth had a son born March 1897 in Little Rock who was named after his father, and Mary Elizabeth married again Dec 1899) I don't recognize any of the other names of Mann's buried in the cemetery, but they could be related. This is the web page for the cemetery if you can access it. http://www.aristotle.net/%7Edelton/Cemeteries/Pulaski/ida.htm Thanks again for your help, and be sure and tell me what expenses you have. Would like to find descendants of William and Luther POWELLl, children of Charles Henry and Nellie POWELL. Wm & Luther were born in IL in the 1870's and came to NE with their parents after 1880. They were living in Lexington and North Platte when their mother died in 1930, and between them had five children and three grandchildren. (One of the boys may have used the name Lewis or Mason for a first name) I have a photo of these two young men with their Kansas Cousins, John and Reuben Powell, plus thirty years of research to share. He was given all the > information allowable to an adoptee by the State of Nebraska, which included > "identifying information" about his birth mother, her parents, how many > siblings she had, her occupation, even her father's surname (which you could > then conclude was her surname also). > When Mr. Dominguez gave this person the information, did he give them copies of official documents, or information in a letter. If it's the second, then beware. Here's a real example of the accuracy of his information -- this has to do with an adoption in 1915: 1. He gave my cousin the name and some additional information on a man who immigrated to the US in 1911. This was confirmed by the ships manifest of the National Archives. 2. Several months later Mr. D. told my cousin that this man was married in Milwaukee in 1909. So far, no records have been found in Wisconsin to prove that statement. When my cousin stood face to face with Dominguez in his office in Lincoln, he could't and wouldn't explain why he said that! 3. The accurate information my cousin has on her father's father is from a Nebraska death certificate, and not from anything Mr. D has given her. 4. My cousin's father was adopted from, I believe, the Nebraska Children's Home. Whichever home it was, it doesn't exist anymore, but I'll use that name. When my cousin asked Mr. D if the Nebraska Childrens Home still existed, his response was "I am the Nebraska Children's Home". Wouldn't you expect a civil person to say "The Nebraska Children's Home doesn't exist any more, I have all the records for that home"??? 5. So, for those who have received information by other means, I would guess that the parents signed a consent to release information. If you got your information from Mr. D, and haven't confirmed it through other sources, beware. Anyone want to guess at why they won't release "correct" information on someone born in 1915? Hi All... My ggg-grandfather is buried in Hall County, NE, or so I think he is. I have not been able to find an obituary of his death, and he's not in the platting of the cemetery. Could it be that, even though he died here, he was buried somewhere else? And maybe the stone that just gives his name and unit, without dates, was placed there for a memorial? He died here in 1900 but had lived for 29 years, 1869-1898, in Kansas. Would the Veteran's Administration have records of Civil War monuments? Anyone have any ideas? Kaylynn audriana@ginetworks.com
The ledger covers parts of 1889 and 1890. There is a lot more! For instance, the Nemaha School District paid 66 cents for 2 doz. hathooks and 3 doz. screws on the 27th of Sept., 1889, and 15 cents for1/2 box bolts and 1/2 box screws and a lb. of nails of the 30th. Nemaha City bought 25 lbs. of spikes for $1.25. Some other names include: James Coons, Henry Williams, Jerry Ballard, John Shook, Adam Young, Gee Kittle, Minor Taylor, L. Johnson, Chas Dearfelt, Squire Crothier, and of course, Norman's ggrandfather William Aynes and brother Andrew Aynes ... just to list a few. Tempe KCooli4087@aol.com wrote: > Tempe, this is fun.
