Greetings from Canada. Someone mentioned something called Stittler Records. I wonder if someone could volunteer to look up stuff for me if I gave them some surnames. Thanks. Sue ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
Cat Harper (and all), Many thanks for this wonderful information. I checked out my local FHC for the fiches...found under Nebraska State Vitals. One small correction for those interested and will also list the fiches order numbers (17 fiche in all). Author is SITTLER, Melvin E. (as opposed to Stittler) Salt Lake Book Area:US/CAN 978.2293 D22si First 16 fiches cover years from 1873-1899, with 1 fiche for the year 1900: v. 1 (4 fiches)......6093604 v. 2 (4 fiches)......6093605 v. 3 (4 fiches)......6093606 v. 4 (4 fiches)......6093607 v. 5 (1 fiche).......6117319 Thanks again to Cat Harper for sharing this wonderful resource. All this time I thought these records covered Lancaster County ONLY! Arlis Anderson Renfro Cat's message: >Since Nebraska didn't keep vital records until after 1904 the best and often >only way to obtain these records is by using the Stittler's Index of Surnames. >It's available on a microFICHE at your nearest LDS FHC. The microfiches are >on permanent loan to my local FHC. Stittler went through all the NE >newspapers from roughly the late 1870's to about 1890 and recorded all the >surnames appearing in them and what the event was. In his index it would say >for example: "m Smith, John 17 Dec, 1883 2-1" This means an article in a >Nebraska newspaper stated that John Smith was married on or about that date >and the record of it is in volume 2, page 1. > >>From here you send the Nebraska State Historical Society $1.00 dollar per >article, (I include a SASE) refer to Stittler's as your resource, provide >names, dates, volume, page and in about 1-2 weeks you have a copy of the >original blurb. > >It's been the best resource for me out of Nebraska for many of my ancestors. >Best of luck, >Cat Harper >

I have recently received the death certificate for my great grand mother. She died in West point Nebraska. On the certificate it indicates that she was buried in "The Home For The Aged Cemetary". No one that I have contacted in West Point seems to know anything about this cemetary. If anyone has information about a cemetary by that name in that area I would appreciate the information Could it have had the name changed?

It was damaged in the fire. Congress destroyed it without transcribing it 13 years later. After the fire, Congress wanted to destroy it right away but scholars and researchers convinced them not to destroy it. It was destroyed in the 30s without much concern though. *Sigh* I read this on the National Archives site. It really was a sad story to read. There is so much we could have learned from it. Looking for Isaac White who allegedly homesteaded in Burwell, Nebraska. He apparently didn't stay very long as his wife, Jane Kinsey, was back in West Union, IA living with her brother, in time for the 1910 census. Any connections? Sally Macias
Is there a list of mortuaries in Omaha from about 1910 to 1940? Thanks, Margaret

This is to advise you that a new Website is being developed by THE IMMIGRANT SHIPS TRANSCRIBERS GUILD, a group of over 100 volunteers who decided to transcribe NARA microfilmed passenger lists and make them freely available to anyone on the Internet. As of this date there are over 50 transcribed lists on this site and 100 more being worked on. In addition the GUILD has had 100 lists donated to the site and many sites agreeing to the linking of their ships and sites to the GUILD site and it is hopeful these will shortly be up on the site, which is still under construction. If you have a transcribed list or photocopies of a NARA list you'd like to donate you asked to send an e-mail to the Site Coordinator at Ships07@aol.com giving the name of the ship, the port of departure and date, the port of arrival and date. If you have a website with a transcribed list on it contact the Resource Coordinator at Joaras@aol.com giving your URL, and all other information concerning the ships on your site. If you would like to volunteer to transcribe a list contact the Volunteer Coordinator at WPTT39B@prodigy.com. The GUILD's site is located at http://iigs.rootsweb.com/immships This site is searchable by passenger name, date of arrival and ships name!
