    3. Hello all; I am looking for any info on Owen White COTTON. Born 1838 in Michigan, served in the Union army in the civil war, rode with Gen Custer (for a while) and settled in Lincoln, Nebraska. He was living there in 1923, the last time that any folks in Mi heard from him. He married Ozella Elvis Haskins in 1865. Children; Laura Belle, b May 1866; Cora Lee b 1867, d 1876; Otis White b 1871 d 1876; Wm Alburger b 1874 d 1874; Herbert Haskins b 1879, lived in Omaha in 1923; Helen Ozella b 1880 married Rob't Brewster and was living in Des Moines in 1923. I guess what I really want to find out is when and where he died. Although any other info would be greatly appreciated. He is one of my Great uncles. One of his brothers was Jay F. 1. [NEBRRoots-L] You Know You're a Nebraskan When...
    2. I found this in the Mar-May 1998 Leafy Branches from Adams Co, NE Genealogical Society and thought it was hilarious. (Much of it fits small towns anywhere...and though I live in Omaha now, I have lived in such communities.) You Know You're a Nebraskan When... (from Marilyn L. Busboom) ...during a storm you check the cattle before you check the kids. ...you are related to more than half the town. ...you can tell the difference between a horse and a cow from a distance. ...you don't put too much effort into hairstyles due to wind and weather. ...you're worried if Nebraska University's star quarterback is hurt and you're hoping it's the first thing on the 6 o'clock news. ...you use all your life savings to go to the Colorado-Nebraska football game. ...you can wear red and white overalls out in public and not feel stupid. ...there's a tornado warning and the whole town is outside watching for it. ...the local gas station sells live bait. ...you think Abraham Lincoln was named after the capital of Nebraska. ...you know the Woodman Tower isn't made out of wood. ...you don't buy all your vegetables at the grocery store. ...you know you can't tube upstream. ...you go to the State Fair on your family vacation. ...you get up at 5:30 a.m. and go down to the coffee shop. ...you're on a first name baiss with the county sherriff. ...little smokies are something you serve on special occasions. ...you go to the lake because it's almost like going to the ocean. ...you know what "the sea of red and white" is. ...all your radio pre-set buttons are country. ...you try to find the cheapest room rates when going out of town. ...using the elevator involves a corn truck. ...your mayor is also your doctor, barber, and dentist. ...you know youshould listen to the weather forecast before picking out an outfit. ...you are walking knee-deep in snow. ...you call the wrong number and talk to the person for an hour anyway. ...your excuse for getting out of school is that the cows got out. ...you talk with a friend about some big event you are going to attend, and by the end of the conversation you've decided you're both too broke to go. ...you know cow pies aren't made of beef. ...your early morning prayer covers rain, cattle, Tom Osborne, and Frank Solich. ...you wake up when it's dark and go to bed when it's still light. ...you consider a romantic evening driving through McDonald's and renting a hunting instructional video. ...you want to buy manure. ...you listen to "Paul Harvey" every day at noon. ...you can tell it's a farmer working late in his field and not a UFO. ...your nearest neighbor is in the next area code. ...you leave your snow tires n year-round. ...you know the difference between field corn and sweet corn when they are still on the stalk. ...you know the code names for everon the CB. ...you pick up all the free stuff at the State Fair. ...you'll skip your mother's funeral for the first day of deer season. ...you can eat an ear of corn with no utensils in under 20 seconds. ...you don't clean up the dog's mess because it's just fertilizer. ...you wear your irrigation boots to church. ...you know enough to get your driving done early on Sundays before the Sunday drivers come out. ...it takes 30 seconds to reach your destination and it's clear across town. ...you consider a building a mall if it's bigger than the local K-Mart. ...you can tell the smell of a skunk and the smell of a feedlot apart. ...the meaning of true love is that you'll ride in the tractor with him.

    3. Dear Ancestor Your tombstone stands among the rest; Neglected and alone. The name and date are chiseled out On polished, marbled stone. It reaches out to all who care It is too late to mourn. You did not know that I exist You died and I was born. Yet each of us are cells of you In flesh, in blood, in bone. Our blood contracts and beats a pulse Entirely not our own. Dear Ancestor, the place you filled One hundred years ago Spreads out among the ones you left Who would have loved you so. I wonder if you lived and loved, I wonder if you knew That someday I would find this spot, And come to visit you. --Unknown

    1. [NEBRRoots-L] Stanton, NE, German Lutheran surnames
    2. Heather Crowley
    3. Hello Folks, I have been lurking for some time, and I have some info people might like. This last summer, I made a trip to Stanton, NE. At St. John's Lutheran Church, the pastor was kind enough to let me copy some info from old church records. I didn't have alot of time to work with, so I copied only those pages I saw mention of my family names. Of course, other names were on these pages, too. Now that even more surnames have been added to my list, I wish I had all the pages. In time...This info may in fact be available at FHC or wherever. In the hopes of finding some family connections, and in the hopes of helping a few people out, I am going to post surnames mentioned, beginning with the births, to this list. If anyone has a request for a specific name, please contact me privately, and refer to the corresponding page #. If someone would be so kind as to let me know if there is a Stanton Co. or Madison Co. NE list, I will also post this on those pages. When I am done filling info requests for any birth surname queries, I will move on to Confirmation and Congregational Members (only one page), then to deaths. I will first mention surnames I am interested in: LEHMAN/LEHMANN, WELLINTZ/WELNETZ, MELCHER, WAGNER, SHOEMAKER, HEBNER, BRUSSOW, WERBELOW, SCHNABEL, PUGH, ELLIS, MATTHES, RAASCH, HUEBNER, MUELLER, BRANDT, BIEHLE, SIMON, etc, Now you see why I wish I had copied all the pages! These names don't necessarily appear in the church records, but all were in Stanton or Madison Co. at some time. All I ask in return for this info: if there is anyone out there with easy access to directories or census records, etc. for 1870 to 1930, I would appreciate a few look-ups. Or any info on the above names. Here goes, births from St. John Lutheran Church, Stanton Co., surnames mentioned as either parents or sponsors: Page 33 - the year 1896, Pastor Vollbrecht LEHMANN SCHUMANN BRANDT SCHNABEL SCHMAH BLUMBERG PATSCH SYDOW BERNSTRAUDS HERMANN KLUG PAUL WICHMANN NEUMANN SCHWARZ FEYERHERM HORN PRAWITZ SIMON OLK ASCH RAABE RAWITZ WIEBOLD BELZ FULLNER VAHSHOTZ PHILLIPP SCHULZE LENSER SCHILLING WILLER HERSCHLAG BENNISOH FECHNER WERNER HERSCHLAG BIEHLE KOCH KRUGER page 34, contin. 3. An interesting old map we have enjoyed is the 1915 Railroad Map we purchased at the Nebraska State Historical Society in Lincoln. 1. Re: [NEBRRoots-L] Question
    2. Hi, Marilyn, You may get a better, more complete answer, but I'll send you this much anyway. This info is from The Lutheran Annual 1998, the roster of Mo. Synod Lutheran Churches. For Hebron it lists: Faith Lutheran Church - Rev. Brent Kuhlman 420 Charles Rd. Hebron, NE 68370 Ph: 402-768-6837 and Trinity Lutheran Church - Rev Duane Simonson RR 2 Box 100A Hebron, NE 68370 Ph: 402-365-4317 >From what I know about Lutheran Church names, Trinity sounds like an older congregation than Faith. But either of them could be from 1908 or older. Good luck! Mona in MO Mona_Houser@juno.com On Fri, 13 Nov 1998 15:27:15 -0700 "Marilyn F.
