    1. [NEBRRoots-L] Yellowstone country, where is it?
    2. John Clement
    3. News item in Grand Island (Nebraska) Independent, 7 April 1884: C.D.M. WASHBURN has sold his farm in Merrick county, and will start next week for the Yellow Stone country. He was two terms mayor of our city, and has many friends here who will regret to have him leave. Charles D.M. WASHBURN is my great-grandfather. He was sixty-two years old in 1884. Anyone have an authoritative description of what Yellowstone country is? It seems likely that it would be more than just the Yellowstone Park. What could be the attraction to cause him to sell his farm and move? -- John Clement 6940 E. Girard 205, Denver, CO 80224-2917 Email: jclement@m2.sprynet.com Voice: 303-691-0613

    2. Jack Franklin
    3. My GGgrandfather, William W. Barnhouse, was born in 1836 in Huntingdon Cty, PA. He married Sarah E. Brooks in OH and they moved to Adams Gage Cty NE. He owned a store there and sold grain, coal, etc. After Sarah died, he married a Lucretia Sophia Bryson b 1856 in probably Gage Cty NE. Her father was Silas Bryson who had lived in OH from bef. 1830 to aft. 1850 then moved to NE. Silas was married to Clarinda Young. William W. and his young bridge had two sons, William Silas called Ted, and Paul. Ted committed suicide in a Lincoln Ne hotel in 1908 and Paul married Edith Lockhard and died in KS. What I really would like to know is where or where did William W. and Lucretia go... They are not buried in Adams Cty to my knowledge. Did they return to OH? Did they go to KS and that is why there son, Paul, went there? I would appreciate any information from anyone. Audrey Annable Franklin

    2. Barb
    3. Hello, list, I am trying to conncect with descendants (if any) of Lucian Carpenter, b. 7 Sept. 1866 and Laura Carpenter b. 4 Nov 1880. Both were probably born in either Gage County or Pawnee County and they may have been siblings, though the 14-year age gap is puzzling. Their names come from a family Bible that lists ancestors and descendants of my ggrandmother, Lorinda Parthenia Carpenter, Lucian's sister. Parents of Lucian were Leander J. Carpenter, b. 1834 in Ohio and Permelia Howe, b. 1840 (don't know where). Leander's family moved to Lafayette Co, WI and Leander & Permelia m. there in 1856 and moved to NE in 1866. Any information about Lucian's and Laura's descendants woule be appreciated. Barbara Archer

    1. [NEBRRoots-L] A Letter to Santa
    2. Is this anyone else's Christmas wish? Dear Santa: Don't bring me new dishes; I don't need a new kind of game. Genealogists have peculiar wishes; For Christmas I just want a surname. A new washing machine would be great, But it isn't the desire of my life. I've just found an ancestor's birth date, Now I need the name of his wife. My heart doesn't yearn for a ring that would put a real diamond to shame. What I want is a much cheaper thing: Please give me Martha's last name. To see my heart singing with joy, Don't bring me a red leather suitcase. Bring me a genealogist's toy: A surname, with dates and a place. == Author Unknown Betty

    2. Bill Mozingo
    3. My family and I resided in Omaha from 1960 to 1962 and was wondering if someone could look in the old phone directories for 60, 61 and 62 and find out what our address was in Omaha during this time. I was only in the first and second grades and ofcourse don't remember our address and have nothing documenting it. The listing would be under the last name of MOZINGO. There is no absolutely no rush and we greatly appreciate any effort. Thank you very much and happy holidays and new year to everyone. Sincerely, Bill Mozingo

    1. [NEBRRoots-L] Finding kin when you only have a State name for POB/DOD
    2. Terry and All, It's tough when you only know the state where an ancestor was born or died but there are plenty of online resources to assist you. Below are 3 sites where they offer FREE census record lookups to pinpoint where you ancestors were. Some quite wonderful volunteers are there to assist you. Just read and follow the procedures at each site. Between the 3 sites they have most all census records years/counties available to you. Below below are more sites that may assist you. Rootsweb's Census Central: http://www.rootsweb.com/~uslookup/census.html Ancestral Findings: http://web.mountain.net/~wfmoney/cd/ Genealogy CD List: http://members.tripod.com/~GrannyGrump/cdlist.html Once you get a county name, go to http://www.usgenweb.com/ . USGenWeb has wonderful county genealogical webpages for almost every state in the Union. You can send in Queries, look at databases of cemeteries, marriage records, tax lists, census records and more on most of the county sites. For how to obtain Vital Records state by state and the years available try: http://www.cdc.gov/nchswww/howto/w2w/alphabet.htm#p Also try Cyndi's List at: http://www.cyndislist.com . She had over 30,000 links to every genealogical subject known to man. Hope this helps, Catherine

    1. [NEBRRoots-L] BTW: Films just in time for Christmas....
    2. The W. Dale Clark Library here in Omaha has gotten another 350 reels of film in during the past three weeks, mostly 1820, 1830, 1840, 1850, & 1860. Close to another 600 are expected within the next two to three weeks, 1840, 1920 Iowa, and some miscellaneous reels from the last 5 years that aren't filled in yet. The newer ones won't be on the film list in the book room because Lynn had just put out a new listing, and she's waiting for the new year and as many as possible of the 1840 reels (about 400 in one order) to come in. The above years ARE completely ordered now, and we're just waiting for them to trickle in. (So if you come down to the library and don't see the county & year you want on the list, check the film room anyway. It MIGHT be there.) 1920 Iowa has been completely ordered now, so that Iowa will be complete for all federal censuses. (Sorry, we haven't gotten soundex yet...and probably won't at least for 1880 with LDS coming out with their 1880 CDRoms soon.) We've also got some of the Iowa State censuses in now as a supplement. Also ordered: 1880 Mississippi, Lancaster co PA through 1920, Berks co PA through 1920, Knox, Union, & Grainger co's of TN through 1920. If you're coming down to Omaha, you can always e-mail Tom Heenan and ask him to mail you the current film list a week or so before you come to help you plan some of the films you want to look at. His e-mail address is: Heenan@omaha.lib.ne.us I promise you though, we are doing our level best to keep the list outdated until we get all of the reels in. Progress WILL slow down after the first of the year sometime, because our supplier is now advertising that he is going to be raising the price from $7.95/reel to $13.95/reel. If you live in the Omaha area and are likely to be using the collection, you might want to consider donating the county years you need while the price is low. It's always a tax deduction. Karen

    3. To Whom It May Concern; I am having problems locating where my great grandmother was born and married. Her name was Blanche Lula Baxter (SSN 447-36-4789). She was born December 30, 1894 someplace in Nebraska and passed away June 6, 1981 in Los Angeles County. According to her death certificate she was 86 at the time of her death. Her parents were John W. Baxter from Michigan and Jennie Adams from Iowa. Blanche married Henry Odegard. Together, they had two children: Pat Odegard (my grandmother) and Helen Odegard. I would like to get a hold of her birth certificate. In order to do so, I need to find out which county she was born in Nebraska. Her death certificate only indicates a state. With Much Thanks, ~Terry

    1. [NEBRRoots-L] Re: 1880 Census (precint's data)
    2. I think what you need is NOT precinct data, but the names of the townships because that's how they generally break down a county's census records unless you are talking about a very large city (something Nebraska simply did not have in the 1880's). There is an excellent reference called a Township Atlas that is often available at genealogy libraries that shows the breakdown of townships within each county within the state. It's quite a large book, and I believe that paperback copies are about $85, so it isn't something that we're going to all run out and purchase for our home libraries as a rule. However, I've made a lot of xerox copies of the counties I have ancestors in so that I can study the relationships of the townships in that county...helps determine the likelihood of which "Mary Jones" someone might have married, for example, if there are several people with the same name, and the same approximate age. Also good for determining whether a township was close to a county line, so that the possibility of someone marrying in another county because their intended was in the next county shows up. Check it out. Karen
