    1. [NEBRRoots-L] A site just for those that are new to the internet
    2. Connie Snyder
    3. Hi everyone, This time every year, we seem to get a lot of new people joining our lists, and I would like to pass on a site that will give you a few good tips on mailing lists, virus scams, chain letters, and much more. You won't go wrong by taking a few minutes browsing through the links that Cyndi has found. >From my own experience, as long as you 'remember your manners' as your Mother, Grandmother, and 5th grade English teacher taught you, you'll be fine. <grin> Oh, and remember, if you type in all capital letters, that means you are shouting, and most people get really upset when someone yells at them, even when they have earplugs in their ears. Don't pass on chain letters or virus warnings, especially to mailing lists. Nothing is calculated to upset people more than that. Don't subscribe to a lot of mail lists for areas that have nothing to do with your ancestors' location on the odd chance that someone might recognize the name. You would be better off subscribing to a state or regional list, rather than a county list if you aren't sure about the location. Our NEGenWeb Coordinators help to monitor both of the Nebraska lists, and will try to help you if they have enough information. For Nebraska, try our County Unknown site for more information on how to find where your ancestors may have lived in Nebraska. Our Resource Center is another excellent place to look for more information. Both of those sites can be found from our main NEGenWeb State page. The link is below my name. Now, for a list of links that will help someone new to all this, please go to Cyndi's "Internet Stuff You Need to Know" page, and start checking out her links, especially the one on Nettiquette: http://www.CyndisList.com/internet.htm Once you've checked that out, then check out her main page, and have fun! You won't believe just how many links she has there for genealogy. Don't forget to check out the USGenWeb Project too. http://www.CyndisList.com/ Connie Snyder <cjsnyder@midusa.net> NEGenWeb State Coordinator http://www.rootsweb.com/~negenweb/ PS (this is a shameless 'help wanted' note. We have several counties that could use the loving care of a special volunteer to take them over. Please check our County Selection list for the names of those counties that are adoptable, and then you can contact me.)

    1. [NEBRRoots-L] Re: Thanks for Bathgate info for STRICKLETT family
    2. Nancy L Galaway
    3. Thanks to all who responded to my inquiry about Bathgate. I may be able to find my family's origin. The fold lore of the STRICKLETT family had said two brothers came from Scotland and the letter I was send a copy of from the late 1940s was talking of this family. The one who had given the info was from Bathgate so this gives me another clue in the family puzzle. All the STRICKLETT families, including the many in Nebraska, trace back to one man Peter STRICKLETT born in PA about 1730 and moved to Lewis Co., KY in 1790s. So if you have anyone with a surname of STRICKLETT let me know. Most of my family ties go to Washington Co., NE. Other families I am researching who lived there but might have scattered are CARTER, GILLILAND, ALLEN, KING, McMANIGAL, HINELINE, BOECHE/BAKER, KISLING, STRICKLETT And many other related families. Would love to hear from anyone who might have a connection One suggestion I had was to try the internet. I do have e mail but do not have the inter yet. I hope someday to have it but need to find some other blind users to see how reading speech programs work on it. It sound like there is a wealth of information out there. It was referring to relatives in a place called Bathgate. It said that Bathgate was totally destroyed by bombings of the war. Does anyone know where Bathgate was? 3. Hello Carolyn, I've sent you the address of another person researching the BOWEN's of Hall County. Hope you can connect! Bowen's Drug Store on the corner of 4th and Pine really brings back memories. It remained there until the '70's. They had the greatest malts at the soda fountain. 2. Carolyn R. McGuire
    3. Hi all, I've been lurking in the shadows for a little while and finally decided to post my query. Hopefully somebody out there can shed some light on a little known part of my family ancestry. I am looking for Jerry BOWEN. I have an obituary for Homer BOWEN from a newspaper called "The Daily Independent" published in Grand Island Nebraska on January 19, 1959. It states that Homer Bowen was born 1/22/1876 at Vales Mill (Vinton Co.), Ohio to Jasper and Harriett Chapman Bowen (my gg grandparents). It also states that at the age of 18 (abt. 1894), he came west with his uncle Jerry Bowen who founded a drug store at Wood River. Both Homer and his Uncle Jerry were druggists. If anybody has a clue as to who Jerry might be, any assistance would be greatly appreciated as we have several siblings to Homer's father (Jasper), but no Jerry. Thanks so much Happy Holidays Carolyn Bowen McGuire

    2. Hi Jennifer, Do you know about the NeGenWeb pages? If you go to www.rootsweb.com/~negenweb/ you will find *lots* of good stuff in the resource center. You can also click on any county to connect to the web site for research in that county. Different counties have different data, but if you don't find what you need there, you can post a query and/or surname. Good luck! 2. Hello, I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself. I am new at this "online" geneaology and I really find it very fascinating. My name is Michelle NOWERS and I am originally from Worcester, MA. I currently reside in Milford, MA. I am very interested in finding about my familys history and I thought I would try some mailing lists to see if I can find out some information. My great aunt passed down all of her geneaology to me and I want to continue with it. My family name is NOWERS and after reading through my aunt's geneaology, I discovered that many of our early ancestors (and even to this day) may still be in Nebraska. I do have quite a bit of information, but anything new would be great! Any information that you may have on the surname NOWERS would be appreciated. Thank you. Michelle Nowers mjnowers@aol.com
