There were a number of KIMBALLS, my grandfather's cousins, who settled in the community of Quasqueton, or Quaskie, as many called it. They had the merchants of the community in their family, I understand, and although I have a lot of documentation for the family, it is always great to be able to add more. My Nebraska cousins also include Miss Sharon Kaye Ritchie, a former Miss America, her sister, who was a Miss USA runner-up, and Judy Kimball, great ladies pro golfer. I wish we had some appropriate Nebraska greeting or farewell phrase, but I can close with one my mother used lots in her diary, when she visited Broken Bow in the summer of 1916......"Meet you at the Bow." Thank you for your efforts. Wayne Montgomery

I also have bona fide Nebraska connections as well. My grandfather, James Frank Kimball was an early homesteader/pioneer in Custer County, in the 1870s. He homesteaded in the Westerville area, and just this past summer, I had the rare opportunity of visiting the homestead. Mary Landkamer, of the Custer County Historial Society, is an incredible resource in Broken Bow! Thank you. Wayne Montgomery 1319 Edgebrook Drive Modesto, California 95354

Again, these are from 1891 "Biographical History of Pottawattamie County, Iowa" - A.W. JOHNSON (page 329): b. I underestimated the interest in this process! Wow! Glad everyone is so interested and that I can be of help. Again, I'll send them as time permits, and perhaps we can work on getting them into a database. BROWN Surname: Children of ALEXANDER L. BROWN of Pottawattamie Co, Iowa, b. (this bio is actually for ALEXANDER L. BROWN). Mona
Another Nebraska connection from the 1891 history of Pottawattamie County, Iowa: MARY NIXON MEGINESS, wife of Joseph Meginess "residing in Nebraska". Mary is the daughter of WILLIAM NIXON and ELIZA COLLINS. Eliza was the daughter of Joseph and Margaret (Allen) Collins, Margaret being the daughter of Colonel Ethan Allen (of historical fame). Some of Mary's siblings married into the MEGINESS family as well, as: Hannah, widow of Benjamin Meginess residing Pottawattamie Co; Sarah, wife of W.H. Meginess, residing in California. (The bio is actually for WILLIAM NIXON). SARAH E. WILSON REYNOLDS, wife of COLUMBUS REYNOLDS, married Sept 16, 1872, in Red Oak, Iowa. Sarah born Sullivan Co, Indiana. Her parents were WILLIAM and ANNA (PEMBERTON) WILSON, the former a native of North Carolina and the latter of Ohio, "now residing in Nebraska." (The bio is actually for Columbus Reynolds.) By the way, if you want more of a specific bio, please tell me who the bio is actually for because the book is not alphabetized! Thanks. Mona
I recently obtained an 1891 book "Biographical History of Pottawattamie County, Iowa" which contains biographies of pioneers, some with Nebraska connections. I will periodically try to post here names and dates of the Nebraska surnames in the hopes that it will be of help to someone. I would also do look-ups for anyone interested. Here are the first Nebraska connections I came across (the book is quite large, 712 pages, so be patient with me, please): MRS. MARTHA BARSTOW SPAULDING, wife of M.W. SPAULDING, Tecumseh, Nebraska. Martha, daughter of Samuel and Alvira (Woodruff) Barstow, natives of Maine and Ohio respectively. (The bio is actually for SAMUEL BARSTOW, a native of Ohio) MRS. MARY ELLEN ROLLINS WILLS, wife of J.B. WILLS, Butler Co, Nebraska; has 4 children. Mary Ellen, daughter of J.Q. ROLLINS and MARY VIENA FULLER ROLLINS (she, daughter of Ezra and Arloa (Turner) Fuller. (The bio is actually for J.Q. ROLLINS, b. Augusta, Maine) CHARLES O. MUSSER, "of Nebraska", and sister ABBIE M. MUSSER BALLINGER wife of George W. Ballinger of Dawson Co, Nebraska, and sister JULIA A. MUSSER BALLINGER wife of William Ballinger of Omaha. These are some of the children of JOHN and CAROLINE A. (SOULS) MUSSER, natives of Pennsylvania and Ohio. (The Bio is actually for NELSON LEWIS, husband of EMILY J. MUSSER LEWIS.) If this information is helpful, please let me know. I will not continue it if nobody is interested.

What is the web location to order those old obits? >Is there any organization such as a Historical Society in Nebraska that does >old obituary lookups? Yes - NSHS will do them at about $5 each. See their website for details. You must supply name, specific date & location. They will figure out which newspapers were in the area at the time. Have lists by newspaper title with issues that were available and microfilmed. Alternative is to check for lookups at a local library or the library at the county seat. Donation & SASE is expected. Another possibility, the local Historical or Genealogical Society may have files of the newspapers, or do lookups from microfilm. These places usually request only $2-3 as donation per obit. Please include SASE. If a copy of the original is important to you, please specify that! Many of the local places do NOT have a microfilm reader that will make copies - don't have a copy machine on the premises either. In that case - NSHS is your research place! Ted & Carole Miller
Is there any organization such as a Historical Society in Nebraska that does old obituary lookups? Mary
Hello, I am seeking information on my ggrandfather William Louis KOLM, who served in the Nebraska National Guard. Original certificate of commission was effective 1 Aug 1905, signed by the governor of Nebraska 10 Apr 1906. He was a resident of Schuyler, Colfax County at the time. I am trying to find information on his unit (I am not sure of the unit number). There is family speculation that he went to Oregon for coast artillery training exercises. That is where he met my ggrandmother. I would like to check out this story one way or the other. Is there anyone out there who can suggest where to seek such information? I would very much appreciate any suggestions. Peggy Kolm kolm@alum.mit.edu
