    3. I find this site entertaining and helpful pertaining to genealogy research. I'm new at all of this (genealogy and computers). I just joined the ARMSTRONG and BAILEY rootsweb sites yesterday. I've seen more "junk" in my mail box in 24 hours than I every could have expected. Comparison shopping definitely gives one perspective. I haven't contributed much yet, but certainly am encouraged by the quality of focus on research methods that I observe within this group. There is much to be learned here....mostly, that genealogy research is a vehicle for expanding my knowledge in paths that I never expected. I have a professional genealogist friend, who has a website and "all that stuff." One of her lectures at the NE State Genealogical Society a few years ago was entitled Migration Patterns. Knowing these patterns is one of the essentials of the task we are engaged in. For sundry reasons, our ancestors often migrated with relatives, friends, religious groups, etc. These movements are sometimes the only clue for finding an elusive line. I appreciate the work you all do in making this site pertinent. Jane Tierney

    1. [NEBRRoots-L] Edgar came too!
    2. warren lewis
    3. My grt grt uncle Edgar Beghtel was born in WABASH COUNTY INDIANA When his parents decided to go to IOWA cir. 1883, he was single and went with them. ( I was so glad when I discovered they had a young'un to go along.) He must have first gone to GUTHRIE COUNTY IOWA with them but then he married Hettie Stewart in WARREN COUNTY IOWA. It appears they settled in FURNAS COUNTY NEBRASKA and finally in RED WILLOW COUNTY where there appears to have been a lot of Stewarts. Hettie died cir. 1899 and he had a second wife. Two of his three sons left NEBRASKA and went to CALIFORNIA. Thanks to the Nebraska Web for helping me find this history of Edgar, the last of that generation of our family who was still an 'orphan'. Now we know what happened to them all! Our NEBRASKA connection took a while but was probably the most exciting as it was the last child to locate. We wonder if his third son, CHANNIE BEGHTEL might still have descendants in NEBRASKA. EDGAR BEGHTEL lived in the southwestern corner of the state long enough that it seems there should be something more about his life written in a history of the area. Jane

Do you just want the birthplace for the > individuals who ended up in NE? > > Thanks, > Barbara I think it's appropriate to include the total pattern for their route across the US and the generations. Each place they stayed for awhile gives us a better chance to find some evidence that they've left behind. A hundred or two hundred years ago, it wasn't unknown for several families or whole villages to pack up and move west together. That's why knowing some history of each area can be valuable in our research. If we know that a disaster caused many people to move on, and they moved together, then we might have a better chance of knowing where they ended up together. Many communities in Nebraska were settled by ethnic or religious groups that traveled together. If all we have as a clue, is that our ancestor came from a specific location, before Nebraska, and we know they were a member of a specific group, then perhaps knowing where some of those people settled in Nebraska would help to narrow our research. I've discovered that my Wilson line moved several times, along with at least two other unrelated families. We're trying to trace all the families in the time period between the time they landed in the US, to their arrival in Illinois, hoping to find more information on them. Connie

Yes this List is made up of a special group of people. Your comment about ancestors travelling in groups is quite valid. Once I learned this and started making note of neighbors of my ancestors it certainly moved my research along. Whether I was looking line by line at a census record, deed indexes or whatever, once I started finding the neighbors I knew I was close to finding my ancestors too. So many of my female ancestors married the neighbor's sons. Keeping this thought in the back of my mind has never led me wrong. In the future I hope to use it to determine where exactly in Ireland some of them hailed from. Regards, Catherine
