James HADLOCK and his family was in Delaware Co NY (1790). >From there, they went to Tioga Co NY (1800). Then into Cayuga Co NY (1810-1836). The family moved to Crawford Co. Pa by 1836. Peter HADLOCK s/o James moved in 1852 to Hardin Co. Iowa and then went on to Richardson County Nebraska in 1870. Selma
Ted's surnames include - MILLER ~1750 VT > 1810 Western NY, there the family split up, some to OH, others to MN, his own >1871 Merrick County, NE > descendents in CA NH, and TX known SILLOWAY 1820 NY > 1880 Merrick Co., NE EVANS ~1800 in CT or NY? > 1810 Western NY > 1886 Merrick Co., NE descendents in CA, western NY?, IA? and OH GUGIN Ireland (date not certain) > 1830 Quebec prov. Canada > before 1860 Washington Co., NE > descendents to KS, MO, CO, CA and Canada JACOBSON 1880 Chicago (briefly) > Jun 1880 Washington Co., NE KINGDON England > 1840 NY (can't find them) > 1850 in WI? >1860 IL > 1870 Washington County, NE > 1940's Riverside, CA (this family seldom found where expected from birthplaces given!) Other lines in San Francisco and ??? Carole's surnames GUTZWILLER Basel, Switzerland > ~1882-7: somewhere in western NY or in IL (great grandfather died, haven't found him; widow married GASSMAN) GASSMAN German-Swiss > 1882-7: IL or NY? >1888: NE (somewhere) > 1889: Columbus, Platte, NE (opened business, found in gazetteer) NO descendents GERBER Aarwangen, Berne, Switzerland > some immigrated 1869 to Omaha and Columbus, NE (my direct line in Columbus, 1889) descendents in NE, KS and CA SCHOBER Römerstadt, Mähren, Austria (now Rymarov, Moravia, Czech.) Dec 1881 to Columbus, Platte, NE (they selected NE because they knew Franz Mueller, land promoter near Bellwood, Butler, NE) Related names - SCHRAM, SCHUBERT, SHOLZ in same area. PERSON Sweden > 1880 USA (perhaps NY City or somewhere near Chicago?) Returned to Sweden (date not known). 1900: Second immigr. to Leigh, Colfax, NE > ~1902 Columbus, Platte, NE (lived at times on farms in Butler and Madison? Counties) Supposedly selected Leigh because close friends to NELSON family, which was related to LUND family. One sister lived in Brooklyn at that time. Another sister married a LUND and settled in Columbus. STROMBERG Sweden > 1892 Calif. > ~1903: "Genoa" - actually living on farms in Platte Co., NE. Date unk: Sherman Co for a time, back to Genoa. Name originally SVENSK? Daughters tended to use patronymic, so married under different surnames for two generations. Change in surname or spelling of surname is common with our Swedes - siblings immigrated as PERSSON, PIERSON, PEARSDOTTER. Other relatives started as LARSON and changed name to LUND. JENSON/JOHNSON changed to JACOBSON. NOTE: Believe we have some research on 8 families that originated in/near Aarwangen, Berne, Switzerland and went to Columbus, Platte, NE (one went to farm in Merrick Co). Swiss surnames are prominent in early Platte County. Several had family members that "retired" &/or vacationed in San Bernardino and Riverside, Calif. (GASSMAN, BUCHER, ERNST) Many Columbus families had relatives in Long Beach, CA. (Seem to recall visiting others in Pomona and Ontario when VERY small - no longer remember the names.) Know that many "Austrian" surnames found at Duncan (Platte), Island Pct (Polk), Bellwood (Butler), and Pleasanton (Buffalo) are relatives to one another. At later dates, start finding them further west - Howard, Deuel and Cheyenne Counties. Believe they sell smaller farms, and buy a bigger place where land is cheaper. Examine the maps - the cousins that family tales said were at Julesburg, CO - were actually farming just north of the state line - in Deuel County, NE! Was searching in the wrong state! ("Are we there yet, Dad?" "Watch the road signs, Junior.") Check transportation routes. Early history - the ports, rivers & canals. After the Civil War - RR maps, changing every year. After 1900 - highway system maps. Don't toss those old maps found in Grandma's truck, they may be your best clue to "how they got there". The Millers
I am anxious to find the family of Charles Henry and Nellie/Ellen POWELL and their two sons....whose names seem to be William and Luther, but at times Morgan, Lewis, and Melvin are used. Charles died in Coyote Twp Cozad in 1898. Nellie in 1930. Luther/Lewis Melvin died in 1944 and is buried at Lexington, he had a wife Mary Speck. William was living in North Platte at the time of his mother's death. . In 1930 Charles and Nellie had five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Gayle gayle1@wheatstate.com

In one single stroke you do not have to put up with this list. Goodbye. Bill ListOwner -- Dear Carol, A couple of folk have approached me to say that you had come back on the list with a bit of a different attitude. If this is the situation, please allow me to say that you are welcome to re-subscribe to the list. I did not block this when I took my action [though it had looked like you had already unsubscribed yourself by the time I checked the list]. The list was responding to "Totally On Topic" list business. Obtaining information such as migration moves of our ancestors is exactly what our hobby is all about. The list is watched by more than one of us, though my name is on as ListOwner. Thus, if there appears to be too much "off topic" material or abuse in any other way we will deal with it. There were some 700 people on the list the other day and more are subbing every hour. Traffic will be high. If this is a problem for you I suggest that you subscribe to the Digest mode. In that way about 22 posts will be grouped together as one e-mail. Send your request to NEBRRoots-D-request@rootsweb.com with the single word subscribe typed on the first line and turn off any signatures. Hello all, Sorry for the non-topic query. In a recently received file from a cousin I find the following entry: XXXX dit XXXXX What does the "dit" mean/stand for? I know I've seen this on one of the lists but didn't think I'd need it - so didn't save it. Thanks in advance! Liz

Gary Martins said (rearranged sentences) - >Also, anyone in the US Army during the Civil War had available to them, 160 >acres or more of land. Thousands of vets hit NE. Some came first with the RR building crews (regular job with regular paycheck after returning to wartorn home after the war). They later filed for homesteads and sent for their families. >Cheap land from the railroads was the big reason for people going to >Nebraska during this time period. And the railroads advertised >heavily, both in the US, but also in Germany, and as far away as the >German settlements in Russia. Try "Nebraska, It's Characteristics and Properties" by Butler in 1873 at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~neresour/NSHS/NECP/necp0000.html Published with help(?) from Burlington and Missouri River Railroad. Somewhere in the material on the web is a story about a family move - having signed a land purchase contract with the RR, the family had free use of a car for household belongings and animals (immigrant car), plus accommodations enroute at places where had to change trains! Explore a little, please! Migration info for about 15 years later - June 1887 "Immigrant Issue" of Lincoln State Journal at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~neresour/OLLibrary/immigr/87journl.html Check the town articles for prices of land in various locations, details of local production, what crops were best, etc. Some of these towns used the opportunity to say "We need a shoemaker ... a grist mill... a hardware store..." Supposedly people purchased extra copies of this particular paper and mailed it to the folks "back home" as evidence that "the good life" was in Nebraska. We all know that! Our ancestors were part of it. T&C

I haven't found any of my family yet but still hoping. Keep it up. Personally, I think it is very interesting to scan through those even who passed through and on to other places. I have found a group of families, some intermarried, some not, who settled together in WI. Most of them moved to IL together, and later some of their descendants moved together to NE. Because I grew up with families of those names, I kept notes on all the records that I found on these other families as well. During the years, they have served as god-parents, witnesses at marriages, sponsors at naturalizations, etc. Eventually most of them intermarried at some point, even if not until 1960's, over 100 years after leaving Prussia. It has been fascinating.
