Hello, I am new to this ListServ and am looking for information about my grandfather on my mother's side. My grandfather's name was Emmett Ray Scott. He was born August 19, 1903 in Lincoln, NE and died December 26, 1983. He had a brother named Carl. His mother's name was Jessie Livingston. His father's first name is a little tricky, it could be Earl, Charles or Ralph Scott. I have been told his name was Charles, but he went by Earl. I was also told that he was employed by the University of Nebraska at Lincoln for many years in the printing section. I found a "Ralph" Scott that worked there and even was able to obtain a picture of him. The Ralph Scott that I found was born in Ohio on 10 Oct 1885 and died in May of 1978 in Lincoln. My grandfather's parents divorced when he was very young, so good information about his father is hard to come by. The Ralph Scott I found could very well be my g. grandfather, but I don't have any way, such as divorce record from Jessie Livingston to positively link him to my grandfather. I am concerned that there could have been more than one Scott working at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln printing section. Any help with information about my grandfather's parent's would be appreciated. Thanks. Mark S. Ellis R.T. Can anyone help me out with one of my most wanted Ancestors. Trying to find out any information I can on Stephen Francis Cooper born July 1, 1896 in Nemaha, Nebraska. I know that his parents were Stephen Cooper and Avarilla Adeline Hinds. This information was taken from in Application for Social Security which was done on Feb 26, 1941. I noticed in the Nemaha pioneers page there was listed an SF Cooper--could this be his father and does anyone have any information on SF Cooper. Thank you Robert Cooper

This could be anything from civil war letters to our memories from when we were kids. There is an ongoing Nebraska Trivia game, that is interesting, fun, and a good way to learn more about Nebraska. You can subscribe the Nebraska Heritage list by sending a message to: NEBRHeritage-L-request@rootsweb.com or, for the digest version: NEBRHeritage-D-request@rootsweb.com with nothing in the subject line and with nothing but the word SUBSCRIBE in the body of the text. Be sure to turn off any signature files. Connie

If there are any relatives of these individuals who would like scans of them, I would be glad to scan them in and email the images to them. The name Panghorn might be Pangborn, but it is hard to tell. The names on the backs are: 1. Ethel Gertrude and Jessie Panghorn Mearns (as children) - studio is Gubelman, Nwark, NJ 2. Jessie Panghorn Mearns at about 11 years old - studio is Hargrave and Gubelman, New York 3. Willard Culver Mearns at about 4 years old (note says died at 12-13 years old) - studio is Tanquerey, New York I found both an Ethel Mearns and a Jessie Mearns in the social security death index who last resided in Superior. While I had assumed and still assume (unless they married brothers) that they were sisters and that Mearns was their maiden name, I'm not sure of info beyond what is on the notes. It states that Jessie was the oldest child of W.H.D. and Julia E. Panghorn Mearns. Again, if there are any relatives of theirs who would like scans, I'll be happy to scan them in. WELCOME TO THE NEBRASKA HERITAGE LIST A few members of the NEBRRoots-L genealogy list insisted there was no room for Nebraska trivia which was becoming increasingly popular with a large number of subscribers, and players of our Nebraska Trivia game which usually generates very interesting discussions. John McCoy and Barb Hruza realized the time had come to create another forum, ranging well beyond the scope of genealogy. This new discussion list was to be named NEBRHeritage-L, and we invited everyone interested in Nebraska history and life to participate. We have some very interesting discussions ongoing from time to time. Stories about current Nebraska topics, or mention of a recent Husker football game are all welcome on "Heritage," but our emphasis focuses primarily on Nebraska's rich historic past and the personalities of former times. The word 'Heritage' is defined as "something handed down from one's ancestors, or the past, as a characteristic, a culture, tradition, etc. Birthright." This is exactly what we talk about So join in, and share your own knowledge of Nebraska history and your own family's stories with us We welcome anyone with ties to our great state of Nebraska! Hi Judy, and also Cheryl, I apologize for using "The Indefinite Specific" on you, Judy. I was hoping you'd know. That's usually for women in the same house, that the man of the house can't understand, because they say, "Could you get the thingamajig over in the whatchamadidle?", to each other. You see, the women know exactly what each other are talking about. And, the man just goes off scratching his head. In this case, I couldn't remember the name of it, as I've never been on it before. Thankfully, some nice people spoke up to help me. >From what I've heard, the "Nebraska Heritage" List, is very enjoyable for sharing old letters. My Grandaunt "Gertie's" letters would be fun. I have difficulty deciphering and transcribing them. Even in one of them, (I'm surprised not more) her sister told her, "Will you please write so I can understand you." Cheryl wrote: I, too, belong to the Nebraska Heritage list. I hope, Sandi, that you will post some of them there. I would love to see them! Hi Cheryl, I'm not subbed to it, currently. I'd love to, at another time. I'm just under the gun, at the moment, getting things done, or I'd sub right now. First thing, I just received a genealogy program that is user-friendly, and must start making entries, let alone dozens of other things. Although, I could sub and unsub at intervals, as those letters need to be done, too. -- Kind Regards, Sandi Goetze sandi@frazmtn.com Nebraska Descendants of Frontier, Furnas & Lincoln Counties: *CLINE*-------------------------------*FERGUSON*GORDON*FLINT*JONES* *LOCKWOOD*----------*BARRY*CAROTHERS*DOING*JOHNSON*LAND*VANDERVORT* *SANDERS*---------*BROWN*CLINE*HINKLEY*JONES*LARSON*PETERS*SANDERS* -----------*SMITH*SWINYER*WOODRING*BONAR*NICHOLAI*WILSON*WESTBROOK*

Thanks to Bill and Gary on your rail route ideas via Chicago. Special thanks to Pam, hope you don't mind me sharing. Her site shows 20 main rail routes across the country from The 1891 Grain Dealers and Shippers Gazetteer, with map printing tips. I've gone through some of them and they list the towns all along the routes, too. The site is http://www.livgenmi.com/1891shippersgaz.htm

Hello co-listers, Recently it was passed along that there is a brief biographical statement somewhere written about my grandfather, Andrew Hansen of Bancroft, Cuming County. It was probably for a centennial celebration or something of the kind. Would anyone on the list have access to such Cuming County information? Thanks, Jan

Informed folk may delete. Sandi is no doubt referring to the Nebraska Heritage List [to sub: NEBRHeritage-L-request@rootsweb.com]. The purpose of this list [NEBRRoots-L] is more to search family roots, while NEBRHeritage-L also includes more Nebraska History, stories, letters, etc. You have to be forewarned though that NEBRHeritage-L also has an ongoing Nebraska Trivia game; thus, it tolerates much more chit-chat, teasing, etc. Much about Nebraska can be learned through it. Looking for the centennial book for Antelope County and one for Madison Co. NE. Would the NE. Historical Society have copies? Is this where I would start? Would that be in Lincoln NE? Have found reference: "The 'War in the Elkhorn Valley' was one of the episodes that made things lively in those days. Mr. Benson and Mr. Rolbinson we believe still wear scars of that bloodless tumult." in the Jan 1, 1885 issue of the Burnett Blade. Did this really happen or only a play on something that happened between friends. These 2 were among the earliest settlers. W.S. BENSON is my gg-grandfather. Have lost his trail after being mentioned in the Burnett Blade in Jan. 1887. Trying to find where he died. Thanks Delores in Oregon.
