My Uncle had a farm in Sheridan Co. We visited him & his family a few times...mostly when I was a "young Whipper-snapper" ! (1950s ) We'd always pass through Valentine (Cherry Co.) where the July temperature was always over 100 degrees...DUST for DAYS ! I remember jumpng in the back of a pickup truck to help stop a brush fire on my Uncle's farm and riding over some very sandy hills...so I'd say at the very least : Cherry & Sheridan Counties. Paul
Hi, Is anyone looking for these surnames and willing to share information? I can share mine too, but right now I don't have a lot. VONDEROHE (Von der Ohe), POLENSKE, WELTZ, LEU They all lived in Madison County in the 1880s. Some also, later lived in Antelope, Pierce and Stanton Counties. Thank you, Holly Vonderohe
Hi Mark, I forgot to tell you that Cherry County has a web address: http://www.rootsweb.com/~necherry/ I haven't tried it yet but I just subscribed to the list for Cherry County. I was born about 8 miles north of Valentine near the South Dakota line. There is a lot of Sand Hills in and around Valentine so I know it is one of the main counties but I'm sure there are others also. The Historical Society at Valentine could answer your questions as well as the Nebraska Historical Society in Lincoln. I visited the Valentine Historical Society and while there I purchase two volumes of History of the Sand Hills from them. They are mostly about the towns and people in the Sand Hills. I don't think the Valentine Society has an e-mail address but I think the Nebraska Society must have one. I don't have the address right now or I would send it. Best wishes Tom Powell
Since you mentioned Albion as being in the Sand Hills and Also Boone Co. , Would Petersburg also be considered as being in the Sand Hills? My gmother and gfather always said that they had lived in the Sand Hills. The younger children of that family are listed as being born in Petersburg. Interesting to see how many definitions of the Sand Hills there are. I grew up in NE Nebraska: Tilden, in Madison Co. and thought we lived near the Sand Hills. I asked my parents who still live there and my Dad said "no, they're out around Ainsworth". Great website with maps and info. On the website, it referred to Halsey, NE, and I know thats where the National Forest is, but does anyone know who it was named after. Which Halsey ? I think I read it somewhere. My p.grandparents were both Halseys from VA.
The 'sandhills' are Morrill, Garden, Arthur, McPherson, Logan, Thomas, Blaine, Loup, Rock,Brown, Hooker, Cherry, Grant, and Sheridan Counties. This would be the heart of the sandhills. The Sand Hills are a bit east of Chadron and might "start' about Rushville, county seat of Sheridan Co., the county next east of Dawes Co, of which Chadron is county seat. But the "center" of the Sand Hills is Cherry Co with Valentine as its county seat, though Valentine is a bit to the east side of the "real" Sand Hills area. A special sort of grass grows there which is better capable of holding the sandy soil from blowing away. They often plant telephone or electric poles with old rubber tires around the bass to help keep the loosened soil from blowing from the sides of the pole. One herds very few animals per acre there, lest they eat the grass to thin. Cordially, Karl E. Moyer Lancaster PA (but Chadron in 1990)

Hi Liz, I agree 100% with your description of the Sandhills of Nebr. I had lived in Anselmo, Custer Co., Ne. for about 4 yrs. & my husband was raised there. Unfortunately I wasn't into my husbands side of genie at the time, so missed a great opportunity for research there. I also noticed that you were raised in Boone Co., Ne. I have a VANDERLOOP-RUTTEN-HUHMAN line that resided there in the 1870's forth. Would you possibly be researching any of them? Hi All, Actually, I think the Sand Hills encompass a much broader area than this. Not having a geographical map at hand I checked Nebraskaland magaizine, published by the game and parks commission. From the map I could find there, for their purposes anyway, it is roughly defined by parts or all of the following counties, beginning slightly north of Albion, Ne. in Boone Co. and north and west of Spalding in Greeley Co. and includes, but isn't limited to Custer, Logan, McPherson, Wheeler, Garfield, Loup, Blaine, Thomas, Hooker, Grant, Arthur, Garden, Sheridan Cherry, Brown, Rock and Holt counties. From another map it appears to run pretty much north all the way to the NE./SD border and to a lesser degree both east and west of the above mentioned counties. While not as breath-takingly beautiful as the area near Chadron mentioned below, this is area is dotted with dozens of small "fishing holes" that have their own beauty and appeal. I am looking for information on the origins of recently retired Senator J James Exon of Nebraska. I am particularly interested to discover if he has any connection with the following family. Henry and Sarah Exon, emigrated to Gage County Nebraska, ca 1882 with children Ernest and Arthur and two other children, names unknown. Their eldest? son James Henry b. 1858, emigrated to Charles Dix County, South Dakota, via Canada, 1881. James was later a lawyer, newspaper owner, banker and judge in Wheeler, the capital of Charles Dix County.. Exon is a very unusual name and a connection is likely. I am registered as the historian of the Exon name with the Guild of one-name studies in Britain and would welcome any mentions at all of the name. Best wishes from Perth, Western Australia Maggie Exon
