    1. [NEBRRoots-L] census microfilm
    2. Dennis G Norvell
    3. A few months back there was a discussion on one (or more) of the NE lists about sources for ordering census microfilm. I've forgotten which list(s) and apologize to those receiving multiples of this. One of the suppliers discussed was Census Microfilm Expeditors of Salt Lake City. At that time, as a satisfied customer, I recommended this company because of their price, service and quality product. I hereby RESCIND any and all positive references I have made concerning Census Microfilm Expeditors. I can no longer afford their 'low' price. Denny Norvell

    1. Re: [NEBRRoots-L] Re: Blair, Nebraska
    2. Tom, Wonderful info in your last reply. Yes, I can handle almost any type of download or attachment at the moment. I am sort of a computer "junkie" and love using the machine. Don't have all the new toys yet, but give me time and I will! I think I will run up to Blair later in the week. Thanks for the info on the newspaper films. I hope to find out more information on both grandparents and assorted relatives through the films. I had scads of them in the Blair vicinity. My aunt Audra worked at the Telephone company in the 1920's -- she may have worked with your mother at one time. Small world! While I am looking through the papers, would you like me to keep an eye out for your mother's name and any other references to your family? I would be happy to do so. Yes, I am in the Omaha area. This is home state for me [well, sort of -- I have traveled extensively in my lifetime] and I have a fascination with the state history that seems to grow as I get older. Take care, Karen

    1. [NEBRRoots-L] Re: Blair, Nebraska
    2. Hi Karen, Glad to know that Hans was your grandfather. As I explained I was not in Blair schools long enough at one time to have many friends. George Campbell was one of my friends. I remember that Hans did play football, but I was a skinny kid that wasn't big enough for football and too short for basketball. Wish I was as skinny now as then. The reason I suggested that you contact the Washington County Genealogical Society, that meets in the Library, was that some of them are probably of an age to remember some of Blair's older people. My brother-in-law, Roger Stricklett, was quite a bit younger than my wife or me. He was a salesman for Vinton Chevrolet so he knew a great many people in the Blair area. I will give you his phone number and suggest that you call him before going there to find out what he can tell you. His phone number is: 402 426-3494. Sadly, most of my friends in Blair are gone now and I am left without them to call on. Do you live in the Omaha area? I am a diehard Nebraska fan, as I guess you can tell from my e-mail name. I was sorry they did not do too well this year. There is one other thing you might want to pursue and that would be to look at the films of the old Blair papers at the Library. There might be some articles that would be of interest to you. Look for the column on Blair's past History that used to appear on a regular basis. I have found some things about my family that way. In one of the columns dated 25 years ago (Feb. 9, 1921) it mentions that my mother had returned to her switchboard duties for the Nebraska Telephone Co. here after being quarantined for smallpox. As I said, if I do find anything about Hans I will send it to you. Many people have helped me in my research, so I am always glad to help when I can. Can you receive attachments on your e-mail? If so, and I run into anything, I will scan it in and send it by e-mail. Best wishes in your hunt. Tom Powell

    1. [NEBRRoots-L] Wilkinson's in Antelope County 1870>1923
    2. Hello, I am looking for any information or resources available on my family. Thanks in advance for your help. Mary Pat Marshall WILLARD WOOD WILKINSON (b. 07-25-1839 d. 02-21-1923) moved from Indiana the late 1850's to Vinton, Iowa. On 10 June 1860, Willard married SARAH JANE COTTRELL (b. 12-11-1840 d. 04-11-1916) in Vinton. Sarah had moved to Iowa with her parents WILLIAM COTTRELL (b. 11-12-1808 d. 01-14-1909) and ANN PARCELS (b. 1809 d. 03-12-1882) in 1855. Of their 12 children, ROBERT W. (b. 08-1861 d. 10-28-1940), SARAH E. (b. 1861? d. 1862), LENORA (b. 1862 d. 1863), MARY MINNE (b. 01-22-1867 d. 06-24-1935), and THOMAS PETER (b. 11-11-1868 d. 02-23-1961, my g-grandfather) were born in Vinton. In 1862, Willard, along with three of Sarah's brothers enlisted in Company D, 28th Iowa Infantry, to fight in the Civil War. Two of Sarah's brothers died of illness during the war. On 19 October 1864, Willard was wounded in the Battle of e of Cedar Creek and was discharged 01-05-1865. When Willard returned home, the family farmed near Vinton until about 1871. On 5-23-1871, Willard took advantage of the Homestead Act and traveled to the St. Clair Valley, Antelope County, Nebraska where he claimed 160 acres of prime land. Their remaining children WILLARD HENRY (b. 10-05-1870 d.?), DAVID MILLER (b. 01-19-1873 d. 09-03-1934), ELLA MAE (b. 09-20-1875 d. 02-13-1944), CHARLES R. (b. 09-25-1877 d. 12-19-1943), JOHN MELVIN (b. 12-05-1879 d. 07-31-1970) and CLYDE R. (b. 08-30-1881 d. 08-18-1925) were born in Antelope County, NE. Sarah Jane and family joined him in September 1871. The remainder of the children were born on the homestead. They remained on the farm until 1897 when they moved to a small farm just east of Oakdale, Nebraska. Due to ill health, Willard quit farming and they moved to house in town. Willard's pride was his work horses. For a few years he operated a dray service in town. Willard died at home on 22 February 1923. Sarah had died on 11 April 1916. Both are buried in the Oakdale Cemetery.

    3. Much of my family tree (Frakes, Garner, Godfrey,Wilson/Rotter, Riley, Schmale) settled in Hitchcock county, Nebraska, near or in Trenton. Many are buried in Cornell Cemetary. I can't find hardy anything on line for this county. Was Hitchcock County listed under another name earlier? 1. [NEBRRoots-L] Ter Veen
    2. Hi, Would any one on the list know about a Carrie and Lena Ter Veen, born aug 10, 1895. What makes me think that they might have been in Nebraska, was because I found the names in a Bible belonging to my mother-in-law, whose ancestors lived in Nebraska. It may have been her mother's book, but it doesn't have her mother's name in it. Just these 2 names in front. This Bible is probably close to 100 yrs old or more. There are some other names in the back of the book, but they are impossible to make out. One for sure is Dora, but Dora who is another question. Any help would be appreciated. Mary In Mn.

    2. Tom, If I understood your post to Jeff correctly you left Blair, NE in the 40's. Do you recall anything about the Aye family there? The family owned and operated Aye Brother's Seed Company. One of the brother's name was Ed (Adolph) but I'm not sure what the other brother's name was. There were several children in the family - Hans was the oldest, twins called Dolph and Girlie (Adolph and Lena), Carrie (married George Luken), and possible another but I am not sure of the name. There were a few other relatives of the same name in Blair at the same time. I would appreciate any recollections you might have of this family or leads regarding living relatives of this family. Thanks, Karen Lehn [kar0557@aol.com]

    2. Hi Dale, Sorry, I can't help you because I was born in 1916 and in 1918 my dad died and my family returned to Blair, Nebraska where my grandparents lived. I know very little about the Valentine area except that to me when I returned it was very beautiful. Perhaps the Cherry County Historical Society in Valentine might help. The Cherry County mail list is at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~necherry/ Try a message to that board and maybe someone in the area will respond to you. Best wishes Tom Powell in snowy New Hampshire.

    2. Aaron Druery
    3. Hello, I once saw a map at a I-80 reststop near York, NE that showed the limit of the sandhills. Ironically, we were on our way to fish at Calamus (extremely beautiful) Res. which is near Burwell and Ord. I had heard that Calamus was in the sandhills, but on the map it seemed to far east. But, on highway 11 about 35 miles before Calamus, sure enough sandhills started popping up! If I remember correctly, the boundary of the sandhills is vaguely: from Burwell NW to Valentine, W to Chadron, S to around Scottsbluff, SE to just N of North Platte, and ENE back to Burwell. I have also heard friends from Chadron refer to the town Hyannis in Grant County to be the "heart" of the sandhills. What I can say for sure is, there sure is some good fishin' in the them thar sandhills!!! Hope that helps some! cheers, Aarron Richard Druery Lincoln, Nebraska > > Mark asks: > > >could someone tell me which counties in Nebraska are associated with the > >"Sand Hills"? 2. Judy, According to my map, the town of Ericson is in southern Wheeler Co. where the Cedar River crosses Highway 91. If this turns out to be your family, please let me know as I have a large group picture (16 people of all ages) taken around the turn of the century of the Ericson family for whom the town is named. This was in some old pictures that belonged to my great-grandfather who homesteaded in the Erina Precinct of Garfield Co (then part of Wheeler Co). I would be glad to send you a .jpg file of the picture. 3. Yes, Liz is more correct. The "Sand Hills" are constantly moving, just like all sand dunes. Holt County lies on the eastern edge as does Highway 281. If you do a Yahoo search of Old Jules, you will find pictures and more on a site for the author, Marie Sandoz, who wrote about the sand hills. - born & raised in O'Neill - Diane
