Can anyone give me the web address for the Social Security Death Index other than the one listed at the FTM web site. I find that one not up-to-date. Thanks, Diane
Don't try to go to Union College on Friday Evening or Saturday to do research at the library. They are a Seventh Day Adventist College, and are closed...(check the hours, I seem to recall they close at noon on Friday, but maybe it's a little later.) They open Sunday afternoons again. Folks are very nice there, the collection is good, but it may be an inconvenience to not be able to research on Saturday, if you don't know to plan for that fact. Karen
Be forwarned, Union College is Seventh Day Adventist and is closed on Saturday and closes early on Friday's. I is always a good idea to call ahead for the hours of where you are planning to visit. Ken Coolidge
To Jean J. Boicourt and others interested The address of the Nebraska State Historical Society Library is 1500 "R" Street, Lincoln, NE 68508. Tel 402-471-4771. They have a good obituary index, also copies of newspapers from Nebraska are on microfilm. Most Lincoln church records are on microfilm, as well as naturalization records, marriage records, etc. from Lancaster County. Many of the materials from the Nebraska State Historical Society Library were transferred to the Lincoln-Lancaster County Genealogical Society Library, Union College Library, 3800 South 48th Street, Lincoln 68506. TEL 486-2514. If any of your ancestors have a "German-Russian" background, you must visit the American Historical Society of Germans from Russia Library at 631 D Street, Lincoln, 68502-1199. Tel 402-474-3363. They have over 30,000 obituaries on file. Another genealogical resource is the Family History Center, 3100 Old Cheney Road, 68516, Tel 4022-423-4561, operated by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Hope this helps. Irma A. Looking for SPAULDING who apparently lived in Nim City (spelling) and Dawson areas. Looking for James Elliott SPAULDING who married Margaret OBRIEN. Thank you in advance! Charlene Spaulding email: mihnbu@aol.com
Thanks so much to everyone (MANY) who sent instructions and advice to me regarding my "cousin's" visit to Lincoln. I have forwarded all the emails to her (what a surprise that will be this morning!) and she can pick and chose from among them. Thanks especially to those who suggested places for her husband and children to visit while she is digging through library records--although hers are old enough to be of some help, I'm sure they would rather be wandering through Merrill Hall (sp?) looking at elephant bones or visiting the roller skating museum (didn't even know we had one!) Again, thank you all for answering! Hugs from Omaha, where the threat of MORE snow is hanging over our heads! Jean

Hi Audrey, I was born in 1938 at home on the Burris ranch. A ranch of 1839 acres that belonged to all of my Fathers brothers and sisters. 100 acres of the New Helena State Park was donated for the park by my Grandfather. The ranch was purchased from Harve Andrews in 1901. My Mother was Myrtle (Brown) Burris and was born and raised just south of New Helena on the way to Merna. She was born in a sod house and the house that is now standing is just north of where the sod house was. If my memory serves me right I think that your mother may have helped my Mother out when she needed some help maybe in the summer one year. I can remember her talking about Lucille Farritor. I of course knew the Knoells and the Christians very well. One year Harold Knoells two boys Doug and Don stayed with their grandparents Ed and Mary and went to New Helena School with us. The Frank Knoells were living in Phoenix when we moved to Arizona and we used to go and visit there real often. My Mother attended the school at Victoria Springs and we three also attended their. I think it was five of Daddy's brothers and sisters also attendedthe school at Victoria Springs. All 7 from my Mothers family attended school there. Both my Mother and Father are gone. I have lots of fond memories of Nebraska and it was never my choice to move to Arizona. I have lots of names and clippings from the Custer County Chief that my mother collected over the years. Jean, et al, You would find a lot of information at the Nebraska Historical Society which is located on the south edge of the UNL campus, adjacent to the Campus Union building. I think that it is on "R" St., but do not remember for certain. -----Original Message----- From: Jean J. Hi Barbara, My name is Mary (Burris) Myers. I have an Aunt and Uncle living in Idaho whose names are Fannie and John Pinkston. I believe that Uncle Johns fathers name was Homer Pinkston and they lived around the Arnold - Calloway area. I can't remember all of Uncle Johns brothers and sisters. One sisters name was Ena. I can find that out though without any problem. I was born and raised around Anselmo, Nebraska all of my younger years and went to the country school at New Helena where the New Helena State Park is. That was the favorite time of my life grawing up in Nebraska. Hope this may help you. Cherie, The Nebraska Institution for Feeble Minded Youth is probably now the Beatrice State Developmental Center (BSDC). The website http://www.hhs.state.ne.us/ded/dedindex.htm has some information about the current program along with a phone number for BSDC and the address of the umbrella agency it is under. Just a couple of years ago, a number of state agencies were merged together into a giant umbrella agency. BSDC was in the Department of Public Institutions and was thus merged into this new umbrella agency. I'm not sure you could have gotten any information from BSDC in the past, but I'm sure it's even lot harder now since there's a larger bureaucracy to deal with. Like other state residential institutions, it would have probably had a standing contract with some funeral home and cemetery for residents who died. FYI, a number of patients were sent to BSDC even into the 1950s who were not mentally retarded -- some children were sent there because they had cerebral palsy or other conditions even if they did NOT have mental retardation (now known as developmental disabilities). Who knows what percentage. So, don't automatically assume your relative was mentally retarded; it could have been another disabling condition. Regarding the funeral home: I find three in Beatrice via http://www.555-1212.com -- Fox Funeral Home 402-223-4096 1116 N 19th St Beatrice, NE 68310 Griffiths-Hovendick Chapel Incorporated 402-223-3521 708 N 6th St Beatrice, NE 68310 Harman-Wright Mortuary 402-223-2341 623 Elk St Beatrice, NE 68310 Harman-Wright Mortuary is probably the existing business that evolved from the Scott and Harmen undertakers. Regarding the cemetery, when I looked up cemeteries for Beatrice on http://www.555-1212.com it only came up with one listing: Beatrice Cemetery Association 402-223-3129 Rr 1 Beatrice, NE 68310 Being a rural area though, they should be able to help you locate the cemetery and if any records still exist for Evergreen Home. My grandfather, Frederick, and his brother William from Hanover, Germany homesteaded near Holbrook, Furnas Co., NE sometime after 1885. They were Missouri Synod Lutherans and belonged to a church out in the country. The church is gone now but the graveyard is still there. I am just starting my search into the family history. I am especially interested in finding a cousin who moved away after his father died at a young age. His father was my dad's brother. I think the brother's name was Edward. Hope to get back to NE one of these days to do some personal searching. I am also looking for my cousin, Gary, who was in Colorado the last I heard.
