I must say a great big thank you to all those on the NEBRRoots-L subscriber list for all the help that has been so graciously given to me. Because of you, (and you know who you are) I have found my grandfather and know where to go for the rest of the information that I need. This is the best genealogy gift that I have ever received, and it all came within 24 hours of my request. You are great! You have the right pew but the wrong church on this one. This is the problem with abbreviations. NE can stand for Nebraska or it can stand for New England. Inasmuch as there are no ports for ocean going vessels in the state of Nebraska <G>, I assume the NE stands for New England and that genealogical society is out of Boston. Their URL is: http://www.nehgs.org/ Hope this helps. Hi all, I bought an old School album and if anyone on these list know of anyone that may have gone to this school I will do look -ups. It is a girls high school called St. Mary's Academy in Los Angeles, Cal 1928. It has lots of advertisements in it as well. Email me privately if you need a look up, Linda minnie-s10@worldnet.att.net

Carol, We are on much the same wave length <smile>. My problem is that NARA says: "Naturalization is the process by which an alien becomes an American citizen. It is a voluntary act; naturalization is not required. Of the foreign-born persons listed on the 1890 through 1930 censuses, 25 percent had not become naturalized or filed their 'first papers.'" Since my grandparents immigrated in about 1868 as children, married in Chicago in 1879, and raised their family in Minneapolis, I am facing what could be a very costly search for records that may not, in fact, exist in either Cook County, the City of Chicago, Illinois, Hennepin County, Minneapolis, or the State of Minnesota. I am willing to consider hiring researchers (I am in the East, the record centers in the Midwest) if these records would contain valuable information. However, from some recent postings, I was beginning to doubt that they, in fact, held much information at all. My grandparents, too, died before I was born. I would be elated to find anything on their families. Thanks for your comments. They will help keep me searching. Best, Elaine Elaine T. And, if they are a given, how much effort should be expended in locating information and files that may be spread over a period from 1870 through 1900 in more than one jurisdiction and state? Is it true that very little information of genealogical value is in the pre-1900 records? I would appreciate having the benefit of your experience with such records. Elaine Elaine T. Hi Folks, Perhaps I'm just late on this, but look at the new photo sites for each state that Rootsweb volunteers are putting up, and some counties. Only a few states seem to have it yet, as I was trying different state abbreviations. The following are up. I found some COOLEY's listed on the Dawson County NEGenWeb site. I just did a quick search with the search engine there, and came up with 3 matches for COOLEY, one of which was a marriage record for Cooley, Maggie Leota & Fair, James L. There is also a listing in Greenwood Cemetery for Cooley, Mrs. John W. and Cooley, S W in the farmer's listing from the 1890-1891 Gazetteer. Evidently they were all in the Lexington area at that time. Hi Tanis, You might check the neighboring counties. I checked the Buffalo County NEGenWeb site and found several COOLEYs and several LITTLEs, but not in the marriages. I have no idea if the individuals are the ones you're looking for. There's a search engine near the bottom of the first page. It might be worth checking it out. Then try other counties, too -- Adams to the south, Howard to the north, etc.(I'm working from memory here, not from a map, so don't believe my suggestioned names <g>.) Hi If there is anyone on this list that lives in or near Pawnee City, I would certainly appreciate it if next time you are at the library or courthouse doing research you could see if the wills and estates probated in 1891 are available for copying. The will I am looking for is Dr. E.W. BURNHAM, died Dec 16, 1890, Pawnee City. Thank you so much. I would be glad to return the favor by looking up a census of Laurel co KY in 1830 or 1840 or checking something here at the Nashville library. Stan
To Joan B and others interested. He came via Liverpool to Philadelphia 20 Dec. 1911 on Ship Mariana. Date declaration of Intent filed 31 Jan. 1919. The complete record would be at the Nebr.
