Subj: [GEN~SWAP] Fee increase Date: 06/26/2001 8:17:32 AM Central Daylight Time From: [email protected] To: [email protected] I just thought I would spread the word that the fees for getting a copy of a Social Security Application are going up drastically on 1 July 2001. If you apply before then you will be charged the old amount which is now $7 if you know the number, and $16.50 if you do not. The new fees are posted at: http://www.ssa.gov/foia/foia_guide.htm It appears that the increases are more than substantial, they are gigantic. This means that the time for procrastination is over. Well, I don't have any Nebraska ancestors in the database, but I do have Mississippi and Alabama ancestors in there. So my question is how we can take the information in there and figure out what the actual location of that land is. There's a page to click for "Land Patent Details." The township isn't named but has a number 5-N. How do I figure out what township that would have been. This could be really, really useful if I could determine what the actual township is because it could help me figure out where to find my Mississippi ancestor in the 1900 census, for example. Bob, As with the other queries on this topic, I am responding to the list, as it might be helpful to others with similar questions. This was the first of hopefully many symposia on land records to be held at Beatrice, Nebraska. It was held there because that is the site of a National Park Service National Monument dedicated to the Homesteading Act that started this tremendous settlement movement of the West and Midwest. I don't live near Beatrice--I'm several hours away. You might try searching Land Records at the web sites I've mentioned earlier to see if this was one of the 60% of homesteaders that could not make a go of their homestead. You might also try searching microfilms of the society pages of newspapers of Monmouth and Beatrice for those time periods to see if there is any mention of their move. You would be surprised at the information these small local papers carried about their citizens! Ramona, I am replying to the entire list because I think other folks might be interested in the discussion also. There were lots of handouts and they might still be available to non-attendees. I don't know if tapes are available, but you might try contacting Todd Arrington, historian at the Homestead National Monument. His email address is at the HNM web site at http://www.nps.gov/home/symposium.html I'll see you there! Donna, I am posting this answer to the list because I think a lot of people could benefit from the discussion. I am far from an expert on this, but if your ancestor was successful enough in meeting the requirements to be awarded his claim, his patent would have been recorded at the Bureau of Land Management. The BLM's website offers information on historic land patents from all 30 public land states. You can go to their web site at http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/ and click on "Search Land Patents." Then plug in the information on your ancestor and do a search. My understanding is that the BLM is adding more records all the time, so keep checking back if you don't find him/her the first time and you're sure the patent was awarded. If you think that your ancestor might have been one of the 60% of homesteaders who gave up on their claim after filing, you won't find them in the land patent records. Their claim information is likely filed at the National Archives for the midwestern region in Kansas City. To get a clearer idea of their holdings and the services they can provide you, you can go to their web site at http://www.nara.gov/regional/kansas.html There is also an email address on that page for contacting the NARA personnel. Also, Russell Lang, a speaker at the Land Records Symposium, has written a book on Nebraska Land Records that is hopefully coming out in the fall. I'm on the list to be notified of it's publication and will let you all know when it comes out. If Russell's writing style is at all like his speaking style, you're gonna LOVE this book--he's quite a story teller! Good luck in your search. I recently made a trip to Guide Rock to finally locate the burial place of my Great-Gr-Grandmother Constance Mathilda (Briggs) Sarratt. Family stories indicated that her son, Joseph Sarratt, had carved her headstone because the family couldn't afford a formal stone. I held out no hope that the headstone would still be standing or legible...but lo and behold! It was there! It's a red sandstone, roughly cut like a Biblical tablet, and laid in concrete at her grave. It reads: Mother Sarratt, born June 30, 1844, died 1916. He also carved a roughly drawn flower pot and two sprigs of vine. I was truly moved by finding it. Constance died July 27, 1916, and Charles moved back to his home place in Brown Co., Illinois where he died. Constance is the only Sarratt buried in Guide Rock. I have ancestors buried in Belvidere, NE. While I was there, I also recorded a few surrounding headstones, (always the genealogist!!), and thought someone might find them useful: 1. Leonard Lamb, Apr 7, 1877 - Dec 4, 1885, 8 yr 7 m 27 d. 2. Mary Lamb, Mother, 1858-1932. 3. Hale H. Lamb, Father, 1854-1930. 4. Albert Lathrop, Co L, 24 NY Cav, Oct 14, 1847 - Jan 5, 1910. 5. Cyntha R. Lathrop, wife of A.L., May 1, 1850 - June 18, 1883. 6. Annette Lathrop, daughter, May 9, 1883 - May 9, 1883. 7. S.J. Watt, Co C, 1st IL Cav. 8. John Watt, d. Dec 9, 1880, 29 yrs. 9. I just returned from the Land Records Symposium sponsored this week by Homestead National Monument and Southeast Community College in Beatrice, Nebraska. What a wealth of information was shared! I wish each and every one of you could have been there, especially if you have an ancestor who was a homesteader. People came from all over the country to talk about and to learn about the Homesteading Act Land Records. These records are an invaluable genealogical resource, and knowing how to use them and what to look for is an invaluable skill. I highly recommend that you consider attending next year's symposium if there is any possible way you can. Regards, Jeanne Nelson ABSOLUTELY FAMILY! http://absolutelyfamily.homestead.com/
I have a collection of 32 electronic census spreadsheets that I am happy to share with anyone who wants to download a free copy. The spreadsheets will allow you to electronically organize and archive your extracted census records. The collection includes the federal census (1790-1920), special schedules including slave and veterans, and spreadsheets for the state censuses of Iowa, Kansas, Massachusetts, New York and Wisconsin. I also have spreadsheets for Canada, England, Ireland, and Scotland. I just added 3 spreadsheets for the state of Minnesota and I expect to finish New Jersey and Rhode Island in July. I created them with MS Excel 97 and they require Excel 97 or 2000 to use them. I have a website at http://www.censustools.com where you can see screenshots of all of the spreadsheets, read about them in more detail, and of course download whatever you need. Hi Listers, I'm looking for a friends grandfather wo was possibly born in Omaha. Never having done research in the state before I thought I would come to the experts.:-) Her grandfather was William R. BROWN, born 1881, possibly in Omaha. He apparently ran away from home at the age of 12 so won't be on the 1900 census. The info above is all the info my friend has on her grandfather. Any help at all would be appreciated. Thanks, Dawn Ellis [email protected] http://www.geocities.com/dawnellis.geo
I just found out the name of my GGG-grandfather Owen about a week ago from a cousin. I descend from Richard's son John C.
