    2. Pam Rietsch
    3. Hi All, Well just got the latest batch of postcards that Fred sent me a few weeks before Balloonfest to get into his on-line collection. It took me a full week to recoup from all the hours spent with our yearly Michigan State Championship of Hot Air Ballooning. If you are ever in Michigan last weekend in June, it is a real neat festival to come to. Very Family oriented. We had over 150,000 people this year. There were about 80 cards added and many new small towns were added per your requests to Fred. He has already been able to get images of people's ancestral homes to them via this site, so he is pleased. http://www.livgenmi.com/2001NEFredsPostCardsTitle.htm Hope you enjoy them, and remember if you like NE history to check out the Nebraska section of the Memorial Library as we have added more data. 2. Hi, Floyd, and Carol, I'm not aware of any cemetery in Buffalo Co. named Salem. A search of Abrahamson, on the Buffalo Co. NEGenWeb Project site, 10 references to that name were listed. Carol might like to check those out to see if they seem to be connected to her family. See the URL in my signature. Scroll down that page to the search engine box. Good luck!! 1. Subject: Re: [NEBRRoots] 1930 census
    2. It is my understanding that all the NARA sites already have their copies of the 1930 Census. The one I use does. They are being edited by the different centers to be sure they are readable. I also know that they may be harder to use. Some states will have a Soundex/Miracode, others will not. Similar to the 1910 census, you have to know where they were living in order to find them. 1. Re: [NEBRRoots] 1930 census
    2. We need to remember that although the NARA releases the census on 1 April of 2002, most repositories that carry the census will not be able to have the reels that fast. It'll take time for copies to be made and sent out, whether to local libraries, or for personal home use. If I need to travel to a Regional Archives, I'd hesitate before making the trip, just in case the place was mobbed that day and the few thereafter, so that I didn't get to use the facility due to others ahead of me. I'm planning my list of films to order, and I know of one microfilm copy company that will do pre-orders starting in October. (Mine end up at the W. Dale Clark library in Omaha, if anyone is interested--where we've got 53+% of the released ones, and more on order.) Karen

    1. Re: [NEBRRoots] Land Records Symposium
    2. Nelson
    3. Emma Jane, Given that you apparently already have the land patent records, you may want to gain a more complete record by tracking down the land entry case file. According to Mary E. V. Hill of the National Archives Branch in Kansas City, "the Land Entry Case Files contain land entry papers, including the application, declaration of intent (if an alien), supporting document, testimony of witness, and naturalization papers, if needed... Homestead case files are likely to include additional family information." The land entry case files are filed in the National Archives and the National Archives Field Branches. If your ancestor obtained his land in Nebraska, you would contact the Midwestern Branch in Kansas City for those records. You would send them Form #84 for the case file. You should provide them with the patent or final certificate number, tell what kind of claim was made (homestead, cash entry, railroad grant, military bounty lands, etc.), the state, name of the land office, Section, township, and range description of the land. You can obtain copies of Form # 84 if you contact the National Archives and: 1. Provide your name and postal mailing address 2. Specify the form number 3. State the number of forms you need (limit 5 per order) You can do this in an email addressed to [email protected] or in a letter addressed to the National Archives and Records Administration, Attn: NWCTB, 700 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, Washington, D.C. 20408-0001 For more information on ordering these forms, check http://www.nara.gov/research/ordering/ordrfrms.html You might be interested in pinpointing the location of this land by checking the Rand McNally Commercial Atlas & Marketing Guide. I hope this gives you a start in locating the rest of the records. 2. Nelson
    3. Sharon, We spent several hours at the symposium trying to learn all the terminology and descriptions of land. I don't think I can come close to giving you a good idea of what it means. The BLM records have definitions for each term if you click on it. Here is what they had for township: Township -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A "township" is a major subdivision of the public lands under the rectangular system of surveys. A township number identifies the number of tiers a township is located north or south of the baseline. A township direction indicates on which side (north or south) of the baseline the township is located. For details, see Township, Township Number, Township Direction, and Rectangular Survey System in BLM Terms and Definitions. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Here is what they say about "township number" at http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/help/glossary.asp#42 --------------------------------------------------------------- Township Number A township number is identified by its relation to a base line and a principal meridian. For example, "Township 5 North, Range 12 West" identifies a particular township that is 5 tiers up from the base line. In this example, the number 5 represents the Township Number. Some townships may be fractional. --------------------------------------------------------------- So your ancestor's township was 5 tiers North of the base line for that area. You may want to go to the BLM Glossary and look up these terms: Township, Township Number, Township Direction, and Rectangular Survey System In any event, you will need to consult a good map for the area would help you get the bearings for your ancestor's land in relation to the principal meridian and baseline for that area. County atlases and directories include maps with township and range coordinates. Here are a couple of sites that futher explain how to read land records: http://www2.pcom.net/cinjod/historian/Deeds.html http://www.iltrails.org/readland.html Good luck! This info comes to us thanks (again) to Kermit Karns, of Imperial.  We will update the info as we can. Thanks also to John Osler's son,  Bill Osler, of Denver, who took pictures of local cemeteries.    I included the photo of the Lakeview Cemetery on the site, and will add others as I can upload the cemetery info.  John organized a tour of county cemeteries in Chase County last May, and pictures of the country cemeteries, and info about the cemeteries is included in a book kept at the Chase County Historical Society Museum, in Champion.  Thanks John!
