As mentioned before, the Nebraska Historical Society is a good source for obits. Their lookup service is modest, and they have an extensive collection of NE newspapers.
One thing to remember is that many of the newspapers only have modern obits on their web sites. While sometimes these may fill in a few holes on recent family members that we may have never been able to find, lots of us still struggle to find the earlier ones...and they may not have an obit, or have a 2-3 liner that doesn't tell us much more than we already knew. Hi, I am a Host on America Online Genealogy Forum. I work the Midwest States chat, a Beginners chat and I have a morning chat called MUGS & HUGS in Ancestral Digs room from 9 to 10 am. I also have two newsletters I send out every day. One is HUGS HOME COMPANION that I send out in the morning with recipes, stories jokes etc. In the Afternoon, I send out MUGS GENEALOGY HOME COMPANION To over 500 subscribers. The first page is general information. The second page is obits whether recent or way back which is appreciated by all who subscribe because these folks live all over the country and it is not easy for these folks to get back to the places their ancestors live and have found cousins through the obits. The third page is Rootsweb Review and the fourth one is Rootsweb Missing links. I am not advertising my newsletters, I just want you to know how much people appreciate getting the obits to locate their ancestors or their siblings and collateral relatives. Almost 9/10 of my subscribers are folks that are in their 60s, 70s and 80s or older who cannot travel to get this information. Please encourage your younger relatives to start searching and talking and listening to their parents and grandparents stories. My three sons had the opportunity of listening to my fathers stories around the holiday dinner table to the point they have some of them memorized. After Dad passed on the boys take turns sitting at head of table to start telling their stories. Please start that tradition in your families. HOST GFS [email protected]
Another way to obtain obits or contact newspapers quite easily anywhere in the US is to access the website www.ajrnewslink.org/. I often find obits in on-line newspapers around the country and it is really easy to cut and paste them into one's gen files. I check Nebraska newspaper websites almost daily and find a wealth of info. Of course, the really small papers which do not have websites are not here but you can usually ask the nearest major newspaper and they will help you locate the nearby, local small town newspaper if available. Hi, The following came from Somebody's Links (see below the notice for exact issue). Anyway, since it was about Nebraska I thought someone might be connected. Gretchen I have a beautiful undated photocopy of a class from FROG POND SCHOOL DISTRICT 61, Pawnee County, Nebraska. It looks to be from the late 1890s or early 1900s. The children appear to be ages eight to 16. They are: Edwin JONES; Anna RICHARDSON; Sadie Ann JONES; Flossie RICHARDSON; Clas NICHOLS; Art GEIGER; Frank JONES; Hazel RICHARDSON; Elsie PARLI; KINGHAM girl; Miss TUCKER (the teacher); Murry NICHOLS; Mamie JONES; Cora KINGHAM; KINGHAM girl; and Nettie GEIGER. I would be glad to e-mail a copy of the photo to anybody who wants one. Hi All, two more books added to the Memorial Library, so hope you enjoy them,,,more in the works will announce them a bit later. I sent this to a few extra lists because the Iowa book covers people from Mass to NY to all the states out to Iowa. If you can think of somewhere else they should be announced, please feel free to let those people know as I am only on a few lists now. I apologize if they are duplicates to you.... If you do not have the Memorial Library url : www.LivGenMI.com/memoriallibrary.htm 1923 Auburn NE PHONE BOOK http://www.livgenmi.com/1923NEAuburnPhoneTitle.htm This was a fun little book to complete, lots of unique business names and interesting phone numbers that certainly would not work today in fast society of many numbers. I still remember being able to dial just 4 numbers to get my neighbors, sadly now it is 10. I made an all name index that totals over 1800 names so perhaps you will find that missing person in SE Nebraska. 5 different communities are included in the book. Hi all, I must not have been very clear in my earlier response about the look-ups I did today in the city directories. I went to the National Archives Regional Office in Waltham, MA to use their microfilms. I read last week that certain directories in Nebraska were available for viewing. There weren't very many, you can check the NEBRRoots list for last week if you are interested. Or check out the NARA website at http://www.nara.gov. I just wanted to let everyone know I cannot do any other look-ups at this time in those directories. They are far away from me now! Laura
Catherine, The family was in Wymore. The only directory that inlcuded Wymore was 1904. You lucked out that they were both in the 1904 listings. I didn't see Elizabeth or Joseph in 1907. The directory had only the city dwellers and farmers listed. Not small towns within the county. 1904 Polk's Beatrice City and Gage County Farmers Directory Wymore listings: Ruark, Elizabeth wid Reson r Beaver Spriggs, Joseph driver James Giles b. Mrs. Elizabeth Ruark James Giles operated a livery on Niagra Ave. Good luck with your search, Laura

Betty, I neglected to write down the year that I looked for you, but I think this was 1928. I also think the books were distributed (or the info was collected) during or after June or July.
