I'm looking for any info on my family lines of Ingwerson, Ingwersen, Pulcifer. I'll gladly exchange data with anyone researching these names. Thanks for any help. Devorah My email is [email protected]
I am hoping that no one thinks that I am out of line for sending this to all of you. Frank Maxted Subject: The Story Tellers The Story Tellers..... We are the chosen. My feelings are in each family there is one who seems called to find the ancestors. To put flesh on their bones and make them live again, to tell the family story and to feel that somehow they know and approve. To me, doing genealogy is not a cold gathering of facts but, instead, breathing life into all who have gone before. We are the story tellers of the tribe. All tribes have one. We have been called, as it were, by our genes. Those who have gone before cry out to us: Tell our story. So, we do. In finding them, we somehow find ourselves. How many graves have I stood before now and cried? I have lost count. How many times have I told the ancestors you have a wonderful family you would be proud of us? How many times have I walked up to a grave and felt somehow there was love there for me? I cannot say. It goes beyond just documenting facts. It goes to who am I and why do I do the things I do? It goes to seeing a cemetery about to be lost forever to weeds and indifference and saying I can't let this happen. The bones here are bones of my bone and flesh of my flesh. It goes to doing something about it. It goes to pride in what our ancestors were able to accomplish. How they contributed to what we are today. It goes to respecting their hardships and losses, their never giving in or giving up, their resoluteness to go on and build a life for their family. It goes to deep pride that they fought to make and keep us a Nation. It goes to a deep and immense understanding that they were doing it for us. That we might be born who we are. That we might remember them. So we do. With love and caring and scribing each fact of their existence, because we are them and they are us. So, as a scribe called, I tell the story of my family. It is up to that one called in the next generation to answer the call and take their place in the long line of family storytellers. That, is why I do my family genealogy, and that is what calls those young and old to step up and put flesh on the bones. ( Unknown Author )
I just wanted to let everyone know that I just saw a great photo collection on Ebay of the Stitt Family from Norfolk, Nebraska. I have nothing to do with the auction but I love to see it go to some family member. The photos date between 1880 - 1930. Judy

I hope I have done this right for it seems that I have exhausted any information from Nebraska that might pertain to my grndfather or any of his relatives inasmuch as he evidently only lived there at St. Deroin for a very short period as far as I can ascertain. Thaank you for all of the other help and postings. Frank Maxted
Well I didn't think I would get the B Surnames added today for Yankee Hill Cemetery but I did so I hope this will help those of you interested in the Lancaster County, Nebraska burials there. I have added the first section of the Yankee Hill Cemetery to the Lancaster County website. The Yankee Hill Cemetery Association graciously provided their database and I will be adding this online alphabetically. There are over 1300 burials and this is still an active cemetery, so updates will be done at least once a year to the database. Surnames beginning with A are now online with more to be added as soon as I can do so. <A HREF="http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~irishrose/nelanc/yankeehillcem_ a.html">Yankee Hill Cemetery Burials A - Lancaster Co., NE</A> http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~irishrose/nelanc/yankeehillcem_a.html A very special thanks goes to Teresa Sullivan, Yankee Hill Cemetery Historian and to the Yankee Hill Cemetery Association for allowing the database to be added online to the Lancaster County, NEGenWeb. This seems to be the season for viruses. My daughter has had some kind of throat infection or virus and then it was my computer. I hope I got my computer to the doctor before it did too many people any damage. I have been working hard to make sure my virus shield was up and going with the latest information. However, somehow this thing slipped through and then hid and was not being detected by any of my efforts to locate it. If any of you have problems, get help from someone that knows something about the virus in a hurry, it can be mean stuff. Do you suppose someday, some one will write in the history books about the computer "viruses" of the summer of 2001. Michael Davis Atkinson, NE

If you live in the Omaha area, they just got their 1880 census index set and it is up and running. I was able to locate some of the shirttails based on the information it has on it. (Plus, the library has nearly 2/3 of the 1880 census reels so you can find your family, then go find them on the actual reel.) Places that the 1880 census is thin: CA, the southern states, New England & Atlantic seaboard. Otherwise, it's pretty much complete through 1880. Karen
Obviously some people don't have enough to do if they're finding time to write viruses. Let's get them doing genealogy. Karen

Hi All, One of my friends has done a magnificient addition for the Memorial Library. "Some Notes on Nebraska Birds. A list of the species and subspecies found in the state with notes on their distribution, food-habits, etc. by Lawrence Bruner, 1896. I am sooooooooooooooo glad it was her typing all those Latin names with the funny spellings. <g> I got through the first letter and my eyes had crossed. This book by Lawrence Bruner was published in 1896 and is the description and in many cases the image of the Birds of Nebraska. Some gorgeous images, some wierd looking birds too.... Speaking of an "unusual" bird included in the index those of you who are interested in Nebraska Research will want to be sure to double check an error of omission that we felt as transcribers should not have been left out when the book was originally published. So some of our ornithological experts in the NEGenWeb Group have gratiously done the research and found rare depicitions of said missing bird so that it might not be ignored in this new on line version of the Birds of Nebraska. I would check under the letter E if you are unsure as to where to find the newest addition. If you are also interested in doing ressearch in the state of Nebraska I would recommend that you use the link provided from that page as there is no better place for NE research anywhere on the net IMHO. My many thanks to Lynn and the numerous folk who have helped to correct this previous error <g> and to the tons of hours that it took Lynn to do all of the scanning and transcription, she is truly a dedicated information specialist. This book can be found at: http://www.usgennet.org/usa/topic/preservation/nature/cover.htm Lynn's Wonderful Legacy Site can be found at: http://www.usgw.org/lps/ This book also becomes part of the Memorial On Line Library: www.LivGenMI.com/memoriallibrary.htm Sincerely, Pam http://www.LivGenMI.com Home of the 1895 atlas & many more historical maps & books for the U.S. in the Memorial On-Line Library http://www.ChaseNEgw.com Home of the 1891 Shippers Dispatch Gazetteer http://www.ShepherdsVoice.org Home of Shepherd of the Lakes Lutheran Church Brighton MI. Osido, This is a multiple posting by me for all lists that I am Admin for -- some of you WILL get duplicates, please accept apologies for this as well as sending out another warning notice. I have received notice from three friends concerning the following, thus I feel it has merit. Even if it is false, it is something I have been expecting for sometime. In other words, the advice given here is good at any rate. :) Spammers and Virus Hackers are becoming more sophisticated. The latest in spamming is to gain access [subscribe] to lists; then falsify the address of someone [Admins are good targets] and request subscribbers/members to send in their name and e-mail addresses. The next thing the admin notices is that person disappears from the list, however the list members get spammed in their e-mail addys boxes. If I need your name I certainly will ask you privately. In addition you can check the validity of my request by asking [ListName][email protected], where [ListName; i.e. NEBRRoost-L/D] is the name of the list you are subbed to. Thus, DO NOT send you name and address to someone who simply asks for it. Know whom you send your information to. If folks do not identify themselves, or the information they supply is suspect, DO NOT send your personal information. There is no need to jam the List with any reply; however, you are welcome to comment privately. If anything seems to warrant telling the entire list, I will do so. Thank you all for your great behavior on these lists. Everyone appreciates it. Special note to NEBRRoots-L and NEBRHeritage-L members: Connie Snyder often steps in as Admin for me when I am unavailable. Notes from her carry the same weight as my own. Wado, Bill --

So sorry everyone....I sent a "test" message (even misspelled it!) when I was trying to find a way to print off my address book. I'm in the process of switching from a Mac to a PC and I'm basically computer illiterate. Sorry :( Donna Madrid
I have been reading with interest everyone's comments about the various files they have received that contain a virus. I couldn't help but think how lucky I have been considering the number of files I receive for the tombstone projects. Then out of the blue, I receive an e-mail message with the subject line of: Neb Civil War Vets from the e-mail address of [email protected] Attached to the message was a file called: Neb Civil War vet.doc.pif. Norton's Antivirus 2000 allowed me to receive the file, but also told me the file was infected and that I should quarantine it, which of course I did. I have also sent the file along to Symantec so they can add it to their collection.......Just thought you should know......Floyd

Hi everyone, We've been having reports all around the USGenWeb Project of a virus that's making the rounds. It's getting to be very prolific, so I thought I would pass along some tips with Bill's permission. To begin with, if you don't have a good virus scanner on your computer, get one and make sure you keep it updated with the latest data files. If you have one and it's not set to keep an eye on your email, make sure you run it on your computer yourself frequently. On a side note, regularly back up any files that you feel are important, such as your genealogy files. Don't open any attached files that have extensions that you don't recognize, especially anything that has "PIF", "LNK", "BAT", "EXE" or "COM" for the last file extension. You can't tell by the subject line or the sender as to whether the attached file is a virus or not. I've had the latest virus sent me several times today, and they all had the .pif extension.. Some had "script.doc.pif" after the actual file name. The last three letters after the period of any filename are the actual file extension and that's what you need to look at before doing anything. If it's any of the above, delete it, then empty it out of your trash folder. It it was caught by your virus scanner, empty it's recycle bin. Make sure that you have it removed from your computer. If you use any email program that automatically opens all files, make changes to your settings so that it will not open these attachments. That way you will be able to see the name of the file and delete if necessary. If you have been infected, follow the instructions from your virus scanner for removing the virus from your computer. Some of the virus scanner programs have extra instructions that you have to follow in order to completely rid yourself of the virus. Those might involve manually deleting files and/or editing your Windows registry, if you have a PC. Check their website for more information. You cannot get a virus through a Rootsweb mailing list, since attachments are not allowed. That means that html messages are not allowed either, since they come as attachments. Here is a link to a Rootsweb page that has more information: http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/announce.html#virus Three good virus information sites: http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/index.html http://www.cai.com/virusinfo/ http://vil.mcafee.com/ Before passing along a virus warning that you receive, check one of the above sites to make sure that it is really a virus. There are a lot of hoaxes going around too. If you find that it's a virus, contact the list owner before passing along the information.
