Hello: We have recently been going through computer prints of over 100 negatives from my grandfather's post-card camera. These photos were taken, we believe, from about 1910 to about 1917. Two of the pictures are of a frame church with a small windows above the front door. Above the small window is a small sign that reads "Salem Church". In the photos there is what appears to be either a platform or a foundation alongside the building. One person looking at the photo felt that the church building was to soon be moved over onto that base. My first thought was that it might be an early photo of the Salem Church (Eval. Luth., now UCC), which is a couple of miles west of Steinauer, Nebr. Because there is a car in one of the pictures, the person mentioned above averred that the church in the photo could not be the one near Steinauer. The early Salem Church outside Steinauer had been replaced by a different looking building before autos had appeared in that part of Nebr. In addition to taking photos of relatives (and friends) in the Humboldt and Pawnee city areas, my grandfather had traveled out to Red Cloud to visit cousins there. The question now is, is it possible that there were other Salem Church's is southern Nebraska? Is anyone on this list aware of any Salem Church's currently in other locations, or even of such named churches that formerly existed in this region? Thanking you for your help. Hubert Paulson
Thanks to a list reader ... I have found out the date of death I was looking for. THANK YOU! Marilyn

This is a shot in the dark ... but I see a lot of postings from people in the Omaha area .... I've just recently learned that a good friend of mine, Betsy Fredricks Levine, died sometime in 2001. I've have been searching all afternoon on the web trying to find out when she died & view a copy of her obituary. Do any of you happened to have known her? Betsy was raised in Omaha & graduated from UNL (where I met her) ... she would have been about 41 years old & I was told died from breast cancer. I've tried searching the Social Security Death Index, World Herald archives, the Tampa(FLA) Tribune, but no luck. TIA Marilyn Busboom
Can anyone help me with some look-ups in Nebraska. Specifically Cass County and the State Historical Society. Thanks Debra
Need missing date of death. Regarding needing the exact date of death of a person. Since I didn't see the Obit can't be sure what it said or how it stated it. Sometimes there are two similar pieces in a newspaper. One is the"Paid Obit" and the other would be a "Death Notice" that the paper sometimes put in for a person at no charge to anyone. Maybe the person is well known in the community or has lived there a long time, etc. There are lots of reasons when and if newspapers put these in and it sometimes has to do with "Space Available" meaning that on a busy news day they will and do omit them. On a light news day they may put in several days worth. If it doesn't state the exact date sometimes they say something to the effect of the person died on Monday (or yesterday). Since you have the date that the Obit was in the paper it's simple to figure from that. However if worse comes to worse and the Obit is of no help you could write or call the Listed Funeral Home and ask them to send you the correct date of death. After all the newspaper only prints what is given to them by the concerned party. Usually this is the funeral home as most newspapers decline to take this information from a private party without them showing a copy of the death certificates (the reason being is that deaths have been reported and the person is alive and well and usually very angry). Hope this answers some of your concerns, Gretchen
How can you tell someone else what is important to include in the obituary? It's a really upsetting time for most folks, they're lucky to have their thinking caps on at all. One way around it is to be sure to write up one's own obit before hand, so what you feel is important is included. If you want the death date there, leave a blank saying: insert actual death date here. I feel like if I can find an obit in a regular newspaper, usually the death was within a few days of the occurance. This helps to order death certificates. Karen
But should they require that "bare bones" include the date? I would think the date is more important to include than the age. I appreciate your suggestion. The site is interesting and I'm sure will be helpful at other times, but for now I am wanting to know what day and date a relative died last week. The obits are published as they are turned in by the mortuary. They include the information that the families want in them. Families have to pay to have the obits in the paper which also means that some will have longer obits, others will cut to the bare bones information. Karen
I had my first experience with the need to retrieve a current online obituary of a relative from the Omaha World-Herald. I am appalled! I can not believe in this day and age that a newspaper would report a death and not even give the date, or even the day, the woman died! One relative had told me she died Sunday, another had told me she died Monday. I was counting on the obituary to give me the right date for my family files. If we can't even get a date in 2001, it's no wonder we have so much trouble finding records on our ancestors! Sue Dotson [email protected]
You might try this site: http://www.ernie.cummings.net/month.htm If you have a month and year, plus which day (Sunday or Monday), and know the approx. date, you can probably figure out the actual date. This is a pretty neat site and helpful when dealing with old newspaper obits. ----- Original Message ----- From: Sue Dotson <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, August 10, 2001 9:14 PM Subject: [NEBRRoots] Omaha World-Herald Obituaries > I had my first experience with the need to retrieve a current online > obituary of a relative from the Omaha World-Herald. I have a web page about ordering copies of WW I draft registration forms: http://www.wathenadesigns.com/Lincoln/wwi_records.html When you send a request, The NARA - Atlanta Branch will acknowledge whether they have the records you are requesting by sending a letter indicating such, along with information on the cost of obtaining a copy. The last time I ordered copies, which was about a year ago, the cost was $10 for copies of the draft registration, substanitially more than 25 cents per page. Sharon, No specific form needed to order copies of WW1 draft cards from NARA. In your letter be sure to say you want copy(s) of the WW1 Draft Application Cards. Include the name of your ancestor, his race, the state and county where he lived. In your letter be sure to say you want a copy of the front and back of the card. Be sure to send a SASE for the return of the copies. The cost is 50 cents - 25 cents for the front and 25 cents for the back. If you only want one copy, send a buck and say the difference is to be given to the Friends of the Archives for all the work they did for us transferring all the information and then organizing it by county and state. Has anyone actually mailed off to the National Archives to get copies of the original WWI draft registration cards? I don't have access to a Family History Center (they have microfilms of the original cards) so I would like to write to the NARA to get copies of the original cards. All of my ancestors I've found in abstracts of the cards have been from small towns or very rural areas, so I don't anticipate a problem with finding out the street address. I do know the counties they registered in. What I'd like to find out is if there is a specific form that I need to get to request this information and how much it cost. Does anyone have any guidance? Hi Everyone, The below message was forwarded from the NEGEN list. Hope this helps someone. You all have a nice week, Gretchen Subj: [NEGEN] FW:HOSTETTLER, Robert H. Obit Date: 08/06/2001 4:35:19 PM Pacific Daylight Time From: [email protected] Reply-to: <A HREF="mailto:[email protected]">[email protected]</A> To: [email protected] While doing volunteer data entry at our local library in Ontario, California, I came across this obituary which might be of some interest to someone on this list. This does not relate to any surname that I am researching personally. Nancy Robert H. Hostettler of Long Beach, retired farmer and brother of Arnold H. Hostettler, 655 El Morado court, died last evening at a Los Angeles hospital, following an illness of nearly two years' duration at the age of 74 years. A native of Pekin, Ill., Mr. Hostettler came to California from Nebraska 13 years ago. In his youth he was a member of the Mennonite church but later affiliated with the Presbyterian denomination at Aurora, Neb. Surviving besides the Ontario brother are two daughters, Mrs. Ralph Gelvin, Stewart, Neb., and Mrs. Fred Runge, Sydney, Neb.; a son, Royal, Denver, Colo.; two sisters, Mrs. S. E. Nafziger, Bloomington, Ill., and Mrs. Harry Moses, Guernsey, Wyo.; a second brother, Otto, North Platte, Neb., and six grandchildren. He had many friends in the West End, where he had been a frequent visitor. Funeral arrangements in charge of the Stone mortuary are delayed to await arrival of the son and daughter. The Daily Report, Ontario, California June 27, 1945 Funeral services for Robert H. Hostettler, 74, Long Beach, brother of Arnold H. Hostettler, 655 El Morado court, who died Tuesday, will be conducted Saturday, 10:30 a.m., at the Stone mortuary, 329 East Ninth street, Upland. The Rev. Earl Salzman of the Upland Mennonite church will officiate. Interment will be in Bellevue cemetery [located in Ontario, Calif.]. The Daily Report, Ontario, California June 28, 1945
Hi All, off to hospital for the next surgery and wanted to get this book done before I went.. This one is cool! Beautiful photographs from the 1910 era of this NE county in Nebraska. From river scenes to residences and business houses. Surely some interest if you have family or friends there. Speaking of friends I dedicated this book to two of my best friends, my Pastor, Rev. Dr. Frank Graves and Renee Hein, wife of another Pastor friend of mine in Nebraska because their ancestors were both involved in the founding of Madison County. While there are not a lot of names, I did as usual make an all name index for this book. http://www.livgenmi.com/1910NEMadisonViewsTitle.htm If you want to see the other selections from the Memorial Library : www.LivGenMI.com/memoriallibrary.htm http://www.LivGenMI.com Home of the 1895 atlas & many more historical maps & books for the U.S. in the Memorial On-Line Library http://www.ChaseNEgw.com Home of the 1891 Shippers Dispatch Gazetteer http://www.ShepherdsVoice.org Home of Shepherd of the Lakes Lutheran Church Brighton MI.
