As a favor to a lady who has over 800 old photos-- many are unidentified, I have posted her list with descriptions to a series of web pages. Anyone interested in her photos may contact her using the e-mail at the bottom of each of the 7 pages. Most are Nebraska photos and several surnames are listed. The link to the list is below: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~irishrose/photos/hin_list.html Take care ~ Kathie Harrison Lancaster County Coordinator, NEGenWeb http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~irishrose/lancindex.html Harrison Roots & Branches http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~irishrose/index.html Listowner of: Rootsweb mail lists : NELANCAS-L, NEDIXON-L, NESAUNDE-L, BRICE-L, BLUNT-L, WEITZEL-L & MEDICAL-GENEALOGY-L
Hi group! Regarding all the Virus talk on the lists which is really off-topic -- but I realize this is a nasty virus-- I would like to suggest that you visit this page I have put up with helpful links regarding hoaxes, virus & Spam problems. Maybe this can help you and let us all get back to genealogy. The link can be found on the Lancaster County Resource page right under Mail Lists for Nebraska. It is a long URL so I will not post the virus help page in this message. <A HREF="http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~irishrose/lancresources.html">LANCASTER CO., NE RESOURCES</A> http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~irishrose/lancresources.html Take care ~ Kathie Harrison Lancaster County Coordinator, NEGenWeb http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~irishrose/lancindex.html Harrison Roots & Branches http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~irishrose/index.html Listowner of: Rootsweb mail lists : NELANCAS-L, NEDIXON-L, NESAUNDE-L, BRICE-L, BLUNT-L, WEITZEL-L & MEDICAL-GENEALOGY-L
Just love it; got a reply from " <[email protected]>" in reply to my message about BadTrans.B, which was the BadTrans worm in the form of ME_Nude.MP3 as the attachment. Gary Martens NEGenWeb County Coordinator for Lincoln, Seward and Polk Counties AHSGR Village Coordinator for Schilling, Neu-Schilling & Konstantinovka
Listers, Gary Martins has kindly pointed out to me that there are two very good articles concerning this virus at: "McAfee" seems to have about the best writeup: http://www.mcafee.com/anti-virus/viruses/badtrans/default.asp?cid=2607 As Norton has a good writeup: http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/[email protected] " Bill ListAdmin --
Several things more about BadTrans.B "BadTrans.B does not require the email receiver to open the attachment for it to execute. It uses a known vulnerability in Internet Explorer-based email clients (Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft Outlook Express) to automatically execute the file attachment. This is also known as Automatic Execution of Embedded MIME type." So if anyone is using Outlook: 1. Does not have Microsoft's patch for this problem: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS01-020.asp. 2. Is not using ZoneAlarm Pro (must be the Pro version), version 7 or later (versions 2001 or 2002) of Norton Anti-Virus running in realtime mode with the latest signature file, or McAfee VirusScan version 6 running in realtime mode with the latest signature file. NOTE: People who's computers DO NOT meet the criteria listed can be inffected by this worm just by receiving an email with BadTrans.B attached to it. You do not have the try to open the attachment.
There seems to be a common clue with this virus....the subject lines all seem to have TWO "Re:" in them. Ones I've seen so far: re:RE:German Way back!!Help!!Please! Re:Re: Glenwood Cemetery Re:Re: Marriage Data Another clue: the return email address has an underscore at the beginning of the address. i.e. if my address is [email protected], it would appear as [email protected] I haven't seen it with this particular virus yet, but my daughter told me another clue to detecting a virus is if the attachment has two dots in it because a file can't be named with two dots. i.e. I received an attachment that was named (something).MP3.scr and knew it was a virus so deleted it immediately. Isn't it a shame we have to spend so much of our valuable time on this subject. The bigger shame is that the creators of the virus don't have more constructive things to do with their time. Everyone has been warned to set your software so that attachments are not opened automatically. Everyone has been advised to delete ANY attachment that you are not aware that is coming specifically to you WITH you knowledge. There has been a new clue [wrinkle] in IDing virus messages, but it is not fool-proof. There appears to be an underline, "_" , before the e-mail address in the "From:" line. This prevents someone from automatically hitting the "reply" button when replying to that address without erasing that underline space. Earlier, in time, this was used by some folks to avoid their address' being used by spammers. This still may be the case. One of the ways this particular set of virus attacks can be slowed and maybe eventually stopped is to notify me, the ListOwner, <[email protected]>, and give me the following information: the from line information the exact name of the attachment(s) Please be sure to send both sets of information. An intelligent judgment cannot be otherwise. With this information I will take whatever action seems prudent. I know that we aren't to send virus warnings, but I have gotten two of this virus from replies to my previous postings, and I can see this will be epidemic so I just want to say what happened when I received mine. If the email immediately offers to open or save the email....DELETE .... I received two of these as replies to previous emails I had sent... Then when I opened them... the box came up saying open or save... The first time warning bells went off in my head, but not onscreen....I deleted and updated. The next time my McAfee went off saying it was this nasty virus.... Hope you read this before you are among the unfortunate many...

This virus/worm seems to be hitting all of us, so I thought I would resend something that I sent to the list earlier this year about the topic of email virus/worms. ------------- To begin with, if you don't have a good virus scanner on your computer, get one and make sure you keep it updated with the latest data files. It used to be that you could go download an update once a month, but lately, once a day may make more sense. If you have a virus scanner and it's not set to keep an eye on your email, make sure you run it on your computer yourself frequently. On a side note, regularly back up any files that you feel are important, such as your genealogy files. Don't open any attached files that have extensions that you don't recognize, especially anything that has "PIF", "LNK", "BAT", "EXE", "SCR" or "COM" for the last file extension. You can't tell by the subject line or the sender as to whether the attached file is a virus or not. I've had the latest virus sent me several times today, and they all had one of the suspect extensions. Some had ".doc.scr" after the actual file name. The last three letters after the final period of any filename are the actual file extension and that's what you need to look at before doing anything. If it's any of the above, delete it, then empty it out of your trash folder. It it was caught by your virus scanner, empty it's recycle bin. Make sure that you have it removed from your computer. If you use any email program that automatically opens all files, make changes to your settings so that it will not open these attachments. That way you will be able to see the name of the file and delete if necessary. If you have been infected, follow the instructions from your virus scanner for removing the virus from your computer. Some of the virus scanner programs have extra instructions that you have to follow in order to completely rid yourself of the virus. Those might involve manually deleting files and/or editing your Windows registry, if you have a PC. Check your scanner software website for more information. You cannot get a virus through a Rootsweb mailing list, since attachments are not allowed. That means that html messages are not allowed either, since they come as attachments. Here is a link to a Rootsweb page that has more information: http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/virus.html Three good virus information sites: http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/index.html http://www.cai.com/virusinfo/ http://vil.mcafee.com/ Before passing along a virus warning that you receive, check one of the above sites to make sure that it is really a virus. There are a lot of hoaxes going around too. If you find that it's a virus, contact the list owner before passing along the information. To contact the list owner for any Rootsweb mailing list, send a message to <[email protected]> and substitute the name of the list where it says LISTNAME. Here's a good site to check to see if a message is a hoax or not: http://urbanlegends.about.com/ Connie Snyder NEGenWeb Project State Coordinator

Hi Guys, We have a REAL Problem here...this is EXTREMELY nasty!!!!! I was getting one every 2-3 minutes last night, many of you know my nephew runs an internet company and they were getting 500-1000 every hour. make SURE your Virus Program is being updated every day if not every hour at this point. I use Norton and it so far has caught them all.... I have sent this to all the lists, and several people that I am not sure realize this thing is spreading so fast. I am on so there will probably be duplication and for that I apologize but we must warn people, and while most lists stop attachments, IF anyone on a list has your addy in their address book and gets infected, you will get sent the virus! One person on one list I am on sent it to me 6 times within an hour last night. Below are the specs....please pass on and REMEMBER be CAREFUL!!! DO NOT OPEN any of these!!!!! DELETE!!! Pam aka listlady www.LivGenMI.com Dear All: The message below is from Sue on the TSL list and she states the situation quite clearly. The difficulty is that the attachment may not show or there is a false extension. It appears to have xxx.doc or xx.txt but the real extension ( .scr.or .exe) is 59 spaces to the right. So even if you get a email from a trusted source ( me or others) and there is no message etc, be very careful. It will also show about 29 or 30k as the size of the message. So that is a dead giveaway in that there is 30 k of message and it doesn't show up anyway . I have also received a mumber of these and have advised some of you of the problem. We will correspond to make sure your computer is clean before resubscribing. If anyone receives one of these virus transmissions from a member: A: advise the list of the name B: send me the name and email address and mail list. Many of you will remember the "badtrans" virus last August. People seemed to wise-up about that one, but now there is another _strain_ of the badtrans virus called [email protected] and I have received quite a few of them ... some from current list members. I am Bcc'ing those list members whose computers are infected, so if you receive a copy of this message without the [TSL] prepend, please quickly go to the link below to learn how to clean the virus out of your computer. You will NEVER receive a virus through the list, but if listmembers get infected, their computer may send you the virus, which _may_ have a list subject line. My Norton "anti-virus" program is doing a very good job of detecting, but Norton doesn't seem to have a complete write-up about this one. They do mention the file extensions etc., but they don't mention how the email will appear or whether there is a message or not. My experience has been that only one has arrived with a subject line from a list post, the others simply have a "Re:" in the subject line. I have seen no message (but maybe Norton is deleting that too) Most of those I have received have come from Australian or New Zealand email addresses, so they must have gotten it first. Also, I don't know whether my Norton is doing this (the write-up doesn't say) but the email addresses of the sending computers is altered by having an underline character preceeding the address, such as <[email protected]> PLEASE remember to make sure you have up-to-date Anti Virus software, AND remember to update the Virus definitions regularly. There are a lot of good Anti Virus programs out there (I use Norton) but they aren't any good unless you update them. You can read about this virus and how to remove it from your system on the Norton Symantec site ... http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/ http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/[email protected]

Dear Nebraska Roots Folks: Calling all Cornish, those who have links to Cornwall in England! Many Cornish settlers and their descendents came to Nebraska to try their fortune, to make a life and have families and experience the American dream. Currently being formed is Nebraskernewek, a Society for the Celebration of Cornishness in Nebraska. Do you have Cornish kin who lived in Nebraska, or other Cornish links to Nebraska or its surrounds? This Society is for you! Inaugural meeting will be held Sat, Nov 24, at Noon, at The Knolls Restaurant, in Lincoln, Nebraska. Howard Curnow, that inimitable Cornish Bard, will be here to launch our Society. Information about Nebraskernewek, its purpose, details on the upcoming meeting and other things can be found at its website: http://www.nebraskernewek.com You're most cordially invited to come to our first meeting if you're able, to join with us in spirit if you're not, and to consider joining with us in actuality by applying for membership. Come support all that we'll be doing to lift up Cornish heritage and culture, and to celebrate the joy of it. We'd love to hear family stories about any of your Nebraska connections. Would you write us? Happy Thanksgiving, all! Jo Harper Secretary Pro Tem jo harper mailto:[email protected]
