Hi John, My best luck for pre-state kept records (can I call them that and get away with it?) has been the local church. Most of my research is in Howard and Sherman counties, and I have found the church records to be very helpful. Everything isn't there that I thought would be, but there is a lot. You can find out if the local parish existed in the timeframe you are interested in by writing or calling the present church. BTW, I have also seen Fialas in the course of my research, too. I think in Howard Co. If you would like me to do a lookup, please send along the details of your family. Laura

Just now I did a search on Google -- Tom Dunn is the only name I found, and I have it directly from him that he didn't write it. But it's quoted on many sites. 1. Re: [NEBRRoots] Old NE vital statistics availability
    2. Hi John, I can only speak for Buffalo County, where, incidentally, there are/were Fialas. The county didn't register births previous to 1904 -- and in a number of cases not until many years later. E.g., my mother's birth in 1909 was never registered. So there are no Buffalo County birth records prior to 1904 at the county or state level. Marriage records for Buffalo County are on file at the court house from the early beginnings of county government. The Trails and Rails Museum has them also, in their archives, which the Fort Kearny Gen. Soc. uses to do look-ups, etc. I don't know the cost at the court house, but I can give you the name of a volunteer who will do a look-up for you. :-) Death records -- I don't know. I haven't looked, nor have I asked. If you are interested, or haven't already done so, please visit the Buffalo County NEGenWeb Project site at http://www.rootsweb.com/~nebuffal scroll down to the search engine box and enter "Fiala" Happy New Year! 3. I have found that many Nebraska counties have sent their pre-1904 birth and death records, and their pre-1909 marriage records to "The State". However, county officials don't seem to be able to say where that is, or if they are accessible "somewhere". Their recollection is just that "The State" required they be sent in. I have the genealogy brochure published by the NSHS with the description of what they have, which in the case of birth and death records appears to be pretty limited. Has anyone on this list actually written somewhere (other than a county courthouse office) for a pre-1904 birth or death record, or a pre-1909 marriage record and been successful? If so, where did you write? Please furnish the particulars of place, process, cost, etc. Thank you! John Fiala

Our NEGenWeb Project volunteers always love to hear that we've helped someone. That's why we volunteer to work with our county and state sites. One correction: The NEGenWeb Project is a part of the USGenWeb Project, and our National site and many of our state and county sites are generously given web space by Rootsweb. There are other servers that also give webspace to USGenWeb Project state and county sites. So, although we have our site on Rootsweb, we are not a Rootsweb project. 2. Better than contacting Lincoln (which doesn't have any of my family in their obit files, despite the fact that many died in Omaha or in the Kearney area over the past 100 or so years--I checked, even though I've gotten copies of their obits here in Omaha and in Hastings), contact the Adams county Genealogical Society in Hastings, NE. They have indexed their newspapers & can get the obit for you if there was one. Naturally, the individual I knew the most about had the biggest obit, her husband whom I needed information about was a two liner., Karen

They looked like the type of things that I wouldn't want to lose so I didn't throw them out. The papers are mostly about Phyllis HUMPHREY of McAllen, Texas and letters to and from Bart or Barton LARSON in Nebraska. I was living at 1826 Jefferson Avenue in Lincoln, Nebraska when I cleaned out the basement and found this box. It has award plaques, a 1965 high school diploma for McAllen High School, and other papers. I would gladly ship these items to their owners. 3. re: Hello Everyone, I am new to this list and am hoping someone can help me. I am trying to locate an obituary on a gentleman who is buried in the Kearney Cemetery ... The Nebraska State Historical Society is a great resource for finding obits. If you can get to Lincoln in person, you'll find they have a gigantic card file in the entryway lobby that is simply alphabetic by person's name. Chances are you can find your name there and it will list a newspaper containing an obit. They will very likely have the newspaper on microfilm. If you can't get there, they can do the lookup for you for a small fee. Of course in either case you may get a really nice writeup or just a "services thursday" notice. The NSHS folks will likely search several days' of papers to make sure that the latter is all that's available if that's the case. http://www.nebraskahistory.org/lib-arch/services/refrence/index.htm Kent Christensen Albuquerque Christensen/Christoffersen: ?? -> Lancaster Co., NE, USA Pedersen (Peterson): Hjorring, DK -> Sarpy Co., NE, USA Grell: Germany -> Sarpy Co., NE, USA
