Chitty ws born May 22, 1863 in Knox County, Illinois. Charles D. Miller was born November 25, 1852 in Erie County, New York. The following is taken from the Steele Ozone of July 30, 1931: "At the age of 16 he moved with his parents to New Market, Iowa, where he made his home up to 1883 when he came to Kidder County and located on a homestead in Manning Township about 11 miles south of Steele. On July 4, a bright winsome young lady arrived in Steele, her name being Laura Chitty, and that day the young couple were united in marriage going immediately to his homestead, where they commences the struggle of making home for themselves and during their years residence there, suffered privations the early Kidder County Settlers, privations which very few here now have ever gone through. Their home was midway on the trail between Napoleon and Steele and had become known as the midway ranch, where travelers would stop and enjoy the hospitalities of the Miller home, for which it became quite famous. In 1895 the family moved into Steele and engaged in the hotel and livery barn business which they continued for about 10 years when the hotel business was discontinued and they erected the fine home in which the family thereafter resided. However, he continued the livery business adn was called upon to make the long and cold drives both day and night taking the local doctors to all parts of the county. He continued the livery business up to the advent of the automobile after which he operated it as a feed barn. One child was born to them while living on the ranch, George H. Miller now a resident of Dilworth, Minnesota, being employed as conductor on the Northern Pacific Railroad. In May 1905, I received my education in Manning township and the school in Steele. During the summer months I would work on the Section of the Railroad during the years 1900, 1901, 1902, 1903, nd 1904, going to school in the winter. In May 1905, I decided to go to Jamestown and hired out as a brakeman on the Northern Pacific Railroad. In 1909, I was promoted to conductor on the railroad. I am still working in this capacity. I was married to Hedwig Eva Languess of Canby Minnesota in June of 1906. From this marriage I raised a daughter, Laura Chaffe, now deceased and a son Forest G Miller, married and has three children and lives at Excelsior, Minnesota. He served 20 years in the Marine Corps, and at present is pensioned. He is in Greenland contructing an air base of the English government. Father passed away in 1931 and my daughter in 1945 and mother in 1945. They are all buried in Woodlawn Cemetery at Steele. Written by George H. Miller A picture of George Miller is included with this biography. Unfortunately, my scanner is toast. I'll scan this picture at work and post later this week. I hope this information helps you out with your family research. Good Luck!
