I am so new that I am still learning how to upload, so I go with the majority. Whatever every1 else thinks. Cheers, Heather
Greetings all! It's time for you to elect your new SC. I've been in contact with Lori Thornton, the USGenWeb Election Committee Chair, and she has asked which way we want to run the election. The standard way is usually to let Larry make a ballot. However the process takes longer. Lori has suggested that they assign two or three election committee members to the election. They could handle nominations and then count votes sent by email and verify against each other. We can discuss the pros and cons then decide. So -- thoughts? Opinions? ~Lee S. Scott Burow (IL SC) has done several elections with his little voting booth thingey. It has worked well in other states (MI, Montana) I'm sure he could do it for us too. Bettie <><

Check it out!! Patrice Hartman, Regent, ND NORTH DAKOTA DEATH INDEX NOW AVAILABLE ONLINE THROUGH THE INTERNET BISMARCK - Family researchers in North Dakota and beyond are now able to also access the state's death index online, thanks to the worldwide reach of the Internet. Prior to its online launch earlier this month, the state's death index was only available at the State Archives and Historical Research Library (SAHRL) at the North Dakota Heritage Center in Bismarck. The index supplies the individual's full name, date of birth (if known), date of death, county of residence and county of death. It supplements the publication, North Dakota Necrology, 1920-1926, and the obituary and death notices found in the newspaper abstract file in the SAHRL at the North Dakota Heritage Center. The time period covered in the death index is January 1, 1881 through October 31, 2005, with monthly updates. The website is maintained by the North Dakota Department of Health's Division of Vital Statistics. Many early deaths were not recorded, and there are very few deaths listed in the index prior to 1900. The death index website's address is https://secure.apps.state.nd.us/doh/certificates/deathCertSearch.htm . The website is the result of an 18-month project by a committee composed of staff from the State Historical Society of North Dakota, the North Dakota State Genealogical Society (NDSGS) and the North Dakota Department of Health's Division of Vital Statistics. The website was made possible by funding and support provided by the NDSGS, which received an initial grant of $1000 from the North Dakota Community Foundation. The NDSGS was then able to raise more than $2000 in matching funds/donations from other genealogical societies and genealogists from North Dakota and other states. Additional information about the NDSGS is available by visiting their website at www.rootsweb.com/~ndsgs/index.html. For more information about the State Historical Society of North Dakota, visit its website at www.nd.gov/hist or call the North Dakota Heritage Center at (701) 328-2666.
Have you changed your Email address since you had names placed on a surname board? I would like to suggest to everyone that has, please notify the appropriate county coordinator to get your entries updated.
Hi page tenders Several of you have had questions about how the new ND death index works and what it included etc. It is up on the interent as a project instigated by our North Dakota State Genealogical Society, and the funds (some $3300 or so) to pay for putting it up were raised by our group and by our member societies as well as individual donations. Patrice Hartman, past president of NDSGS and current secretary is in contact with VItal Records and will soon put out a news blurb for the general public on the index. Here is part of a message she sent today, showing some of the recent contact with Vital Records. If you would like to know more about how, why and when records were kept in ND referring to the current Vital Records Division of the ND State Health Department, you can click on the link provided by Patrice. "George: I just received this email from Darin Meschke. So the time period should be 1881 to September 2005 with monthly updates. The search should go back to 1881, however it does appear that the index returns an error message for any date prior to 1900. I have instructed ITD to make that change and it should be done soon. Also, the current records are up to date, except the most recent 30 days. Once a record is in the system and the date of death is more than 30 days old, you should be able to view it. We need time to make sure the birth-death linkage occurs and that 30 day window meets our needs. The press release will go out perhaps today or tomorrow. Whenever Rick Collins is able to get it all together and have it checked by Jerry Newborg. I will then send that out to the members of NDSGS and on the various mail lists etc. I did have it at the meeting last June and I also sent it out by email before that. There have been some revisions since then but it should answer most of these questions. If you have any of the information sheets from the archives it explains the vital records department. Or go to this website: http://www.state.nd.us/hist/sal/gen/infvit.htm Patrice" George L. Barron, Jamestown, ND, pages for Eddy, Foster, Kidder, Stutsman, and Wells Counties.
Lee, I've found you can only check from 1900 up to 2005. Maybe the earlier dates will be added later. I had better luck searching with the last name only and clicking on name below to search only in the name and that worked the best. Pat ----- Original Message ----- From: L. S.
