On the Dickey County NDGenWeb site there is a marriage index (actually 2 - one by grooms' surnames and the other by the brides') referring to marriage items as recorded in the Oakes Times and the Dickey County Leader newspapers. Mary Ann Kunrath, president of the Dickey County Historical Society submitted this info for posting. Even though a secondary source is not as good as a primary source, a citeable secondary source is better than nothing. I've been in contact with a lady who has a wealth of knowledge regarding pre-1925 North Dakota marriages. Recently on one of the mailing lists the subject came up and I made a reply that it would be nice if we could get data from the state of North Dakota or if not at least consolidate what we have as it's apparent some counties have it and some don't. She then responded to me and said she has a lot of data but doesn't know how to make it available to everyone. I replied to that telling her that I can help with that and I would get with the State Coordinator to see if we can put it on the state site or failing that, I would put it up on it's own site and publish the URL to all. Well, the next day we started the election process for a new coordinator so I thought I would not bother Lee about that and wait until that is done and approach the new SC on it. Before I could even do that, this lady sent me a note and it sounds like she is almost ready to give me the data; however, ! she would like some help. She has looked at every one of our counties already to see if someone has data out there which can be added to this central list (I think she is compiling web site links which have the data). However, after she thought about it for awhile she decided to ask me if there is some way each coordinator could double check their own sites in case she overlooked some county links in the browsing process. So, the question is - Which county coordinators have pre-1925 Marriage Registration / License data posted on their web sites? If you do, would you please send me the website URL and I'll make sure that your website page is included into this project. Although it appears she is looking for just NDGenWeb Counties who have that information, perhaps we should also consider other resources in our counties which may have it - especially those resources who have online data. I think this is a great chance for NDGenWeb to shine, I think there is a great need for this kind of data to be centralized, and I think we now have the opportunity and the resources to do it so I am sure hoping you will all respond to this effort.
