Many thanks to those who supported and voted for me as the Representative At Large. Thanks also to the many who sent me private eMails of concern and provided me with many different perspectives and ideas. It's been an interesting experience and campaign and my promise is that I will do whatever I can to be a representative for all of you during this term of office. I will maintain my subscription to USGENWEB-DISCUSS mailing list and I will ask each of the Regional Coordinators for permission to be subscribed on their mailing list so that we can maintain communication. If you would rather communicate privately, please feel free to use eMail address - usgwdp@cox.net . Thanks to the hundreds of Local Coordinators who have made USGenWeb the great organization it is. I want to be a part of helping us grow as a genealogy resource and in expanding our reputation as a top-notch genealogy organization and to that end I welcome your help. Joe, Thanks for the welcome. I have seen a lot of your good work including some items used on the Cavalier site, hope I can expand the Cavalier site in the future with some "Home Grown" material. Michelle, I received the same e-mail, and wrote a brief reply. I'm glad you are compiling an answer for him. Thanks. I'm already involved in setting up classrooms at school and our family reunion starts Sat. and is the whole week, so I'm also shopping and getting ready for the wonderfully grand invasion. -Char Here's what I sent him: 1. Records are only as good as the accuracy of the informant and the record keeper. For that reason it is best to gather as many records as possible. Researchers must not get hung up on the spelling of names. My North Dakota relatives knew who they were and so-what if someone misspelled their name. No big deal. 2. There is no one best place. Location and date must also be considered. When beginning research anywhere, it is always best to work from the present backwards, so contact all living relatives and find out what they know before tackling records. Then the basic sources are a good springboard - census records, vital records, ND state census records (compiled on the years ending in "5") are good places to start. Remember that young men often hired out in the spring (when census takers made their rounds) to work other farms and young women helped out at neighboring farms as well. If you don't find who you are looking for, take the time to search the whole township and even neighboring townships. Sometimes an individual could be found in 2 different families as a hired hand. Also a person could be missed altogether by a census taker. Just be aware that that could happen. Newspapers and church records are also valuable resources. I enjoy reading the newsy accounts of ND newspapers in the first half of the 20th century. Contacting the local (county and /or area) historical societies has been a boon to my ND research. I know that if I get back to Dickey County ND, I am looking up Mary Ann Kunrath of the Dickey County Historical Society and giving her a big hug for all the help she and those who work with her have been in sharing Dickey county resources with me. 3. Hi all- I've just received an email from a gentleman who is writing an article for Family Tree magazine about ND genealogy. I'm compiling answers for these questions, but would like some help. Anything you can give me on any of these questions would be very appreciated!! Michelle 1. What's the most important thing a researcher ought to know or keep in mind before starting to research North Dakota ancestors? 2. Where's the best place to start in finding Norh Dakota ancestors? 3. What's the most important often-overlooked resource for finding North Dakota ancestors? 4. If a researcher plans to visit in person, what's the one don't-miss archive they should be sure to spend time at?
