    3. Reference - TAKE NOTE--Possible Genealogy SCAM There has been some discussion lately on the SC list and other lists of a site that charges for access and appears to be mostly links to other people's online data. It does this by using frames and frequently it appears as if the off-site data is actually part of the site. Several USGenWeb data pages have been located on this site. There are some things we can do with our pages to make it clear where a visitor is and to help them break out of the frame. Wednesday evening, at our regularly scheduled chat, I have invited Joy Fisher, SDGenWeb, SC and Holly Timm, NYGenWeb, SC to discuss page identification/linking problems. I have also extended the invitation to NDGenWeb CC's as well. WIGenWeb Project Meetings Place: IRC server: irc.rootsweb.com (6667) Room: #USGW-WI Time: 9 PM EST Wednesdays http://www.rootsweb.com/~wigenweb/irc-chat.html Tina Tim Stowell State Coordinator - NDGenWeb Project

    2. Tim Stowell
    3. Dear USGenWeb Members: By now, news of MyFamily.com's acquisition of RootsWeb has made its way through the genealogical community. We are thrilled with the overwhelming positive feedback we have received. I would like to take this opportunity to assure the USGenWeb Board and Members of MyFamily.com's desire to continue our support of your project. And in response to some of your questions, we will make the following pledges to the USGenWeb Project: * MyFamily will continue to support the USGenWeb Project with free, unlimited server space. * MyFamily will not place advertising banners on USGenWeb Project pages without the express permission of the page creator. * MyFamily will never charge for access to any USGenWeb data, nor will we use it in any way other than its current use, without the express permission of the contributor and/or the Project. * The USGenWeb.org and USGenWeb.net domains will be transfered to The USGenWeb Project. We have been working with Tim Stowell, the National Coordinator, to ensure a swift transfer. * MyFamily will continue to strive towards open communication with the Board and Members of the USGenWeb Project. On a related subject, I want to reassure you that all of the current RootsWeb features, including mailing lists, message boards, user databases, and WorldConnect GEDCOMs, will continue to be FREE. And while we will no longer solicit financial contributions, we will continue to honor all commitments to current contributors for tagline-free mailing lists, banner-free home pages, use of Personalized Mailing Lists (PML), vanity domains, etc. We appreciate your on-going support of RootsWeb, and look forward to a long relationship. Sincerely, Curt Allen Chairman of the Board MyFamily.com, Inc.

    1. [NDGENWEB-L] North Dakota CC featured in newspaper story!
    2. Tim Stowell
    3. The following appeared in the Jamestown Sun and the Devils Lake Journal on 8-22. Barron Researches Records To Help Others By Matthew Johnson Family/Life Editor When it comes down to finding genealogical information, George Barron of Jamestown might well be the Sherlock Holmes of Stutsman County. To say the least, nobody has done more genealogy work in Stutsman County than Barron. "I'm more or less the searcher for Stutsman County," Barron said. Barron's research has led him to chronicle events in the county ranging from marriages and deaths to documenting burial plots at cemeteries. What began as a project to benefit his own family grew into a hobby that will benefit many families for years to come. A retired Jamestown High School chemistry and aviation teacher, Barron began his "second career" by searching for information about his own family in 1988. His daughter, Mary Kuhn, had taken on the task of putting together a Barron family photo album. He set out to help her and later, with the help of his cousin, Norma M. Johnson, published "The Barron Family: From Banffshire, Scotland to Moody County, Dakota Territory, USA." The book traces the family back to the 1700s. "We got hung up on William Barron. There were two and we didn't know which one was ours," Barron remembers. Since establishing that record of his family tree, complete with photos he'd obtained himself from relatives, Barron has volunteered countless hours helping to make it easier for others to find information on their family members. "I don't do much of my own stuff anymore - mostly working for other people, for free," Barron said. Now almost an entire wall at Alfred Dickey Public Library is filled with index books he's successfully completed. "Along the way I got sucked into working on other indexing projects," Barron said. The projects include the "Rural and Village Cemeteries of Stutsman County, North Dakota," which Daphne Drewello, library director, assisted with. It's published by the the James River Genealogy Club. The 280-page book contains information on more than 8,000 burials from 73 of the 80 known cemeteries in the county. It's the most exhaustive burial information yet published in the area. This summer he's worked on documenting burials in Jamestown's city cemeteries, including two cemeteries at the State Hospital. He had already compiled burial information on Highland Home Cemetery in Jamestown back in 1992. That cemetery book, published by the Red River Genealogy Club, lists about 10,000 burials. Barron remembers going out and reading cemetery markers during the cold winter months to gather information. Before doing that book Barron had put an index in the 1990-1991 Stutsman County Cemetery book. In the process of indexing that he thought someone should put together a book on all the smaller cemeteries in the county not listed in the book. "It's like getting a virus or something. Once you get it, you can't get rid of it," Barron said. In 1990 Barron decided he could glean more information about people from obituaries and began taking them out of The Jamestown Sun, starting with the then "Jamestown Alert" in 1878. By 1995, Barron had recorded information on everyone who had any record of death in Stutsman County. He continues to record obituary information from the area. "I've gotten them all indexed from 1878 until this (Friday) morning," Barron said. The work at times can become a bit depressing. "Pretty soon you discover all your buddies are dead," he said. But Barron presses on for the benefit of providing a decent record. He said he's indexed more than 60,000 obituaries. For the complete story, see the Aug. 19 edition of The Sun Contributed by Gerald Bartram, CC McKenzie County Congratulations George! Tim

    2. Roger Swafford
    3. *Fwd as appropriate* Greetings, Voter ID's are being sent via email from the EC members. The ID is required on the ballot form along with the email address to which it was sent in order for votes to be tabulated correctly. For members who have counties in more than one region the ID is good for all those races in which the member is qualified to vote. The server which is hosting the ballots does not have a lot of bandwidth so please be patient. The URL will be announced when the polls open.

    3. Gerald, click on the NDGenWeb Archives URL below and check McKenzie County. I don't believe they have. If you have something to upload to the Archives let me know. Or if you decide to keep it on your page we would appreciate a copy for the Archives. Put a copy there and researchere have access to all NDGenWeb files using the search engine. Besides, you and I may come and go so the Archives is the best choice for permanent preservation.
