Mary Lindbo sent me a CD with files for the Towner County Archives. among the more interesting items were miscellaneous school files. These contained study plans, books and their costs, etc for the 1890s thru about 1927 . You can check these and the other uploads at the Towner County Archives TOC page. Thanks Mary. As of today there are 24 subscribers to the list - 18 in mail mode, 6 in digest mode. CHANGE of ADDRESS: If your address changes, please let Joe Zsedeny or me know what your old address is and what your new address will be and I'll make the appropriate changes to the list and to the county selection page. BOUNCING MAIL: >From time to time people bounce off the list for a variety of reasons among which are: user unknown (message from your ISP) account over quota (message from your ISP) account inactive (message from your ISP) For reasons, unknown to me, sometimes Rootsweb will auto unsub you when the bounce limit is gone over while at other times it won't. When it doesn't automatically unsub you after the number gets over this limit I will unsub you. If for some reason your account is still valid and you write me saying that your address is valid, I'll resub you. If you are unsure whether or not you are still subscribed here, send a test message to the list. POSTING MESSAGES: To post a message to this list send it to ndgenweb-l@rootsweb.com using the address you are subbed to the list under. This applies whether or not you receive the list in mail or digest mode. If you try to post with an address not subbed to this list, it will bounce to me as list manager and I'll resend it showing the line (not a subscriber) in front of the subject line. FINALLY, Clarence Heier has retired as the Emmons County coordinator. Clarence was with us quite a long time and will be missed. Our best wishes go with him. By my count we have 20 people in the NDGenWeb Project hosting the 53 counties: 9 people host - 1 county each 4 people host - 2 counties 4 people host - 3 counties 1 person hosts - 5 counties 1 person hosts - 9 counties 1 person hosts - 10 counties May each of you have a blessed New Year. Thanks, Tim

A variation of the Badtrans virus is loose again - I've got about 40 of them today. As I saw them downloading - I deleted the attachments - .scr and .pif but according to the info below, I'm not sure that that was enough. >From a list I'm on: 'It's a variation of the badtran virus. This one lauches itself through a blank email. You don't have to open the attachment for it to run amuk. I don't see any updates on McAfee or Symantec for it; This virus eats up every available byte of memory you've got, and I'd guess would then crash your computer without utilities to recover memory. I know it's a variation of the badtran, that much I've figured out. It sends itself out to everyone in your address book, not just unread mail as previous versions of the badtran. It also launches itself by simply reading the email since the program is embedded into a blank email. I'd suggest that you set your email program NOT to show HTML emails, but only in .txt format. I think that will stop it from launching (but I'm not sure). When it resends itself, it uses several different file extensions and file names. So don't count on it being the same as what David said earlier. It won't be. This one is not writing the "kern32" or "inetd" files onto your root directory, like the badtran virus did. I haven't figured out what files were written, but I do know that the system registry was affected, just like the original badtran. It also seems to resend itself AGAIN everytime you get online. So, expect several copies of it from all us idiots who don't want to waste disk space on anti-virus programs.' Tim
May you and yours have a happy and safe holiday. Remember, stuff the turkey, not yourselves! I'm taking a couple of days away to visit my parents in Georgia. Tim

It has become clear in the last few weeks that porn (and perhaps other) sites have adopted a new wrinkle to attract traffic. When a domain is not renewed, they buy into the redirect some how which dumps people into a pornographic site. The following link which was a Chamber of Commerce site link now goes to something called EuroSlut. This page does have a line near the bottom about being able to purchase this domain. A word of warning if you try out this link, in Netscape anyway it immediately spawned several more windows I had to kill as well. Please be extra careful about checking your links. Some link checking programs are not going to realize a link now going to a porn page is not what you intended so you may need to hand check links as well. I do not think a single CC or SC in our project wants links to porn sites on their pages but with this new tactic it has become possible for them to sneak on to your links <sigh> Please feel free to pass this message on wherever it may be pertinent including outside the project as this is not just a problem for USGenWeb sites. Dear USGenWeb Project member: On August 24, 2001 the USGenWeb Advisory Board was notified by the current registrant of the usgenweb.com domain name, Dale Schneider, that he is no longer interested in keeping it. He has offered to sell the registration to the USGenWeb Project for $2500; if the Project is not interested in purchasing it they indicate they will sell it at auction. Mr. Schneider has indicated that the price is negotiable and that there are several weeks available for the Project to make a decision on purchasing the domain. Please be assured that the Advisory Board is looking into the various options available to us and we will keep you informed as to the status of the domain and how we decide to respond to Mr. Schneider's offer. In the interim, we would like to remind all project members that our official domain is http://www.usgenweb.org and that all links to the USGenWeb Project home page should use this domain. If you have any questions about this issue or comments you would like to make, please contact your representative(s). A list of representatives and their contact information can be found at: http://www.usgenweb.com/about/whoswho.html Sincerely, Holly Timm, National Coordinator and the The USGenWeb Advisory Board

<< *Announcing* 8/3/01 Today is the debut of the Patriot Lookup Service on the National web site. The purpose of this new service is to assist the General Public by providing DAR Patriot Index information upon request. The service will be staffed by Volunteer Information Specialists (VIS) volunteers coordinated by Rose Mary Patterson (AZ). Current DAR members already have access to the Patriot Index from the Members' Web Site. We are now, for the first time, offering the general public a Patriot Lookup Service directly from our National web site. If you are a member of a genealogy list or forum and would like to share this information with them, please consider using the following announcement: Now Available FREE DAR PATRIOT LOOKUP SERVICE Do you think you have a Revolutionary patriot (male or female) in your family tree? The DAR will search their database of proven Revolutionary patriots free of charge. This service is available at www.dar.org Sincerely, Susan Tillman National Chairman - VIS Committee >>
Recent uploads include Mary Lindbo's transcriptions for the 1920 and 1921 Hansboro News for Towner County. Thanks, Mary, nice job. Mary also submitted a transcription of a wonderful narrative history of the railroad's impact on Bartlett, Ramsey County, ND. It is called the End Of The Track and is great reading with many names of people passing through: http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/nd/ramsey/history/bartlett.txt. The 1910 Emmons County Census index is now online to accompany the images. This transcription was done by Moe Lynn, Edmonton, Alberta whose family had migrated up there from ND. Moe has now done several ND indexes over some long Canadian winters. Other works in progress include the rest of the 1900 Census. I received the NARA films this week and will begin scanning them shortly. I have a volunteer to do the Morton index once the scans are complete. I have completed all of the county township maps which include township and range numbers. I will be uploading them to the Archives as time permits. However, anyone desiring a copy before I get them up let me know. Again, Mary Lindbo had her hand in this as she furnished maps which revealed the township and range numbers. I joined them to modern census maps which helps researchers pinpoint homesteads. Thanks again, Mary. For those of you who normally correspond with me and for whom I neglected to inform of my new email address, please note it above. IMPORTANT MESSAGE BOARDS IMPROVEMENTS You have probably heard about the new message board changes coming about in the next days and weeks. Ancestry.com and RootsWeb.com will be releasing a new integrated message board system that is a combination of two powerful message board systems (i.e., GenConnect and FamilyHistory.com). Users will be able to take advantage of a much larger community in which to share experience, tips, and genealogical information. Users will be able to access these new message boards on either RootsWeb.com or Ancestry.com, and message board access will remain free on both sites. We expect the new system to be more stable and have more features. Improvements include the following: --- The new message boards database will be by far the largest collection of such messages on the Internet. In fact, the FamilyHistory and RootsWeb messages are extremely complimentary. The majority of the messages on FamilyHistory are surname-based, while RootsWeb's strength is in the locality and topic areas. Not only will the new combination enjoy a larger set of data, but users will have access to a much larger audience. --- The new message boards can now handle attachments to e-mail messages in the form of uploaded pictures (scanned documents, family photos, etc.) and GEDCOM files. --- Users will be able to view the e-mail address of message authors and be able to respond to them easily and privately. However, the message boards cannot be "crawled" by unscrupulous third parties to gather e-mail addresses for spam mailings. --- Search functionality will be improved compared to either the RootsWeb or FamilyHistory systems. Search hits will be ranked by relevance and wildcard searches are available. --- The hardware infrastructure supporting the new message boards is faster, can handle larger traffic loads, and is more stable. The new system is also less expensive over time and easier to maintain. The boards, however, will definitely be a change. One specific concern we have is with existing hyperlinks to the old GenConnect system. We believe we will be able to redirect most of the traffic to the proper destinations in the new system, however there may be some adjustment required by USGenWeb SCs and CCs. USGW CCs will still be able to use the new message board system for their query requirements for XXGenWeb's. Actually, we hope that we have preserved the important features and conveniences from GenConnect as well as added a few new bells and whistles. It is important to us that these new boards continue to serve the needs of the USGenWeb users. We will be working hard to help you learn about the features of the new system so that they can continue to function as important research tools. Please help us by being communicative yet patient as we launch the new system. For now you can direct questions/suggestions to vicki@rootsweb.com
