Char, Go to this page and you will understand better what happens from browser to browser: http://www.netmechanic.com/cgi-bin/perlfect/search/search.pl?q=Browsers. For more Information you can access http://www.netmechanic.com directly. If MS didn't play the bully and try to trick folks into using their products we would have a smooth playing field IMHO. One thing we need to know is what browser you use at home, and what browser LDS was using and what code standard you wrote your code to. I am no expert on this so I write my code with Netscape Composer and tweek manually in a few cases then check both NS and IE to see how it looks. Here is another URL to check, a W3C (latest HTML standard) validation service: http://validator.w3.org/. You can use this to help clean up your code. Be sure to save your current work in a separate folder so you can aways return to ground zero <G>. Hi List- I am the new CC for Dickey County. I just returned from the UGA Conference in SLC. It was wonderful except for one heart-sickening episode. I went to the newly remodeled Family History Library in Salt Lake City. They have many computers (100s) available to their patrons. I sat at 2 different ones to pull up the Dickey County page and was horrified. (It was worse than walking by a mirror on a bad-hair day!)The page didn't look at all like the one I viewed on my computer at home or my daughter's in Bountiful, Utah. At the FHL it has the red and green guidelines around my tables that I scripted as remarks and the text is not spaced correctly. I was sorely disappointed. Can someone explain what has happened? Is there something I can do to clean up the mess? Sincerely, Char Kibbie
Lucky for us, Joy, Moe Lynn, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, found a great grandfather at Ft Yates in 1900 so he indexed it for us. And your link brings it immediately to your reseachers. Thats great. I hope you will make a copy for the Archives <G>. BTW, if you want to do any other census indexing for your counties I will burn and send a CD of the images for you to work from. These are full size and comparable to film viewer images. I include a free image viewer which works great by showing all the files and loading each with just a click. The only catch is that the Archives gets a copy and you get to keep the CD only if you finish the index. I can speak only for myself when I say that the folks who create virii are to me just as dangerous as those folks halfway around the world as they terrorize humanity. While computer virii do not kill or maim individuals they do cause untold trouble, wasted time and money that could be used elsewhere. That said, the quote below is from the April 24, 2002 Rootsweb Review - No, RootsWeb.com is not sending you a virus or worm in an attachment -- no matter what these "forged" addresses with RootsWeb name in it say. Be sure your anti-virus software is up-to-date and that you use it. Never open any e-mail attachments unless you have confirmed with the sender that she or he did indeed send it to you for a reason. Do not assume that the attachment came from where it says -- these sophisticated worms are able to forge addresses and they are fooling lots of people. Some even claim to be "worm removal tools." Don't believe them. The Klez worm has been able to spread because of a security vulnerability in Microsoft Internet Explorer (browser) and because many people do not update their browser and download these patches. Don't risk the loss of your personal and genealogical data: Update your browser now: [2-line URL]: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/critical/q290108/default.asp/ Most antivirus vendors, such as Symantec, McAfee and Sophos, offer Klez patches. Is your computer virus free? Find out at: http://housecall.antivirus.com/pc_housecall/ ---------------- Additionally the following sites offer FREE virus checkers and/or software: http://www.grisoft.com/html/us_index.htm or http://www.commandondemand.com/eval/index.cfm or http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/activescan.asp?language=2&Country=63 &Partner=1&Ref=EN-PR-AS-107 -------- I rarely send attachments - and do not do so without prior notes to the persons I do send attachments to. If you can pre-screen your email before downloading it, do so. Just because an email appears to be from a friend - if it shows an attachment check it out beforehand for most likely it is not from your friend but has had their address forged. The bad thing about the Klez virus is that it forges who it comes from in ALL cases so that where it actually came from is anyone's guess as the sender's email program, infected grabs an address at random from the sender's address book slaps it on the outgoing mail and sends it to whomever the sender has contact with either from their address book and/or apparently anywhere in their email. This current virus is the most devious one I've seen for lots of innocent folks are getting infected as they open mail and/or attachments they thought was from someone they know. There is even one particular sneaky mail this worm sends out that say that it is Klez removal tools, tells folks to ignore any messages that say hold on, don't run this - so that when they do ignore the safeguards in their system they too will become yet another victim of this virus. Having been zapped before by virii, and fighting it daily as part of my job, I can think of no greater common threat we face. Please be careful what you open and check your system often for virii. Thanks Mike for your kind words. Curiosity got the best of me, so I rooted through some old mail and found that the earliest mail I have is from 4 Dec 1996 - where Joe was asking about space and to be put down to host Pembina County. So, likely he sent a note to me in late November, 1996. Tim At 10:28 PM 4/26/02 -0400, Garnett J.(Joe) Zsedeny wrote: >Thanks, Mike. And it did just that this afternoon as I recovered my lost email. My thanks go to a co-worker and the Norton gods of recovery. Lastly, my thanks to those of you who've been so patient with me during this crisis. Tim Stowell tstowell@chattanooga.net Chattanooga, TN
I'm still trying to recover from a hard drive crash on Monday evening. All inbox mail from 4/1 - 4/15; outbox for the same period and personal mail from mid-March - went to the great bit bucket in the sky. It appears my HTML files, images, 2 major files (database, book) made it through the storm. My attachments were on another directory and were thankfully spared. I worked 12 hours with a lunch break yesterday in recovering and putting onto a new hard drive - the data from the old one. I've still got some reconstruction work to do - but hope to be back online later tonight. If you sent me mail - personally during those time periods, and I've not answered you, please resend it. ------------------------------------------------------via webmail---- Tim Stowell tstowell@chattanooga.net
Hi ND genweb page punchers If you have not already done so, I'd like to ask you to put up a link on your pages to our North Dakota State Genealogical Society page. Our page is not as up and coming as some of your pages, but we're trying to get a start. The page address is: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ndsgs/index.html We are a relatively young organization, but we represent the state's genealogical societies. Our membership is open to delegates from those organizations as well as individual members. We have been working on completing countywide cemetery books, publishing pre-1925 county marriage indexes, and promoting volunteers to work on county school censuses. Our recent "MOST Cemeteries of Morton County, ND",2002 was a project that was promoted and aided by our membership with help coming from various societies and individuals. Our current president, Partrice Hartman of Regent, is bent on trying to get all of our counties with cemetery books. We have a few counties in the west that are without published books. She also is resolved to get Vital Records death, marriage, and divorce indexes up on the internet during her term of office. We all hope she is successful! So if you have the time, I would ask you to add our page to your links. Our page is not long out of the construction phase, but we hope it will grow and be useful. George L. Barron, Jamestown, ND, fumbling with Eddy, Foster, Kidder, Stutsman, Wells, and our James River Genealogy Club pages. NDSDS page owner, Joe Zsedney also allows me to fumble with a couple of the sub pages there.
Hi everyone! Thank you for the warm welcome. I'm very happy to be aboard. I've been very busy these past few days updating the websites for Dickey and Sargent counties. Judy certainly did a lot of hard work laying a great foundation and I hope I can keep it going so that these sites can become wonderful resources for anyone doing research in the southeast section of North Dakota. I'd like to share a bit about myself and hope I get to know you, too. I've been an avid genealogist for over a quarter century and pecked at it for almost a decade before that. I live in Kent*, King Co., Washington. I'm an active member of the South King County GS where I presently serve as co-chair of the education committee. I teach beginning genealogy workshops on an ongoing basis. I especially enjoy teaching young people. This is my very first time working with web pages. I wouldn't have attempted this but a very dear friend, Mary Kozy, encouraged me. In fact last Friday when I told her I finally got the sites she came over and gave me a personal 8-hour crash course on writing html code (6 p.m.-2 a.m.). Mary has 4 GA counties and is a webmaster. I have the desire to want to do a great job but I found out in short order I knew nothing. Last Thursday I was as lost as you could imagine. If you like what's there, it's because Mary got me set up. She's an excellent teacher and I'm not afraid to try. I'm also grateful to have Paul Fedries's book "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Creating a Web Page" 4th edition. This past weekend I've felt like a rebellious teenager - doing bare minimums on daily duties and staying up all night partying with html code. But I'm not young enough to keep this pace up many more days. Besides my family wonders if I have left town. ;-) My husband Tony and I have been married 32 years. We have 12 children, 4 boys and 8 girls. 5 still live at home, ages 7,10, 12, 15, 17. Our oldest 5 are married and we have 14 grandchildren with #15 due in June. All live within 10 miles of us except one daughter and her family who live in Bountiful, Utah. This means I get to go there a couple times a year. When I do I split my time between being grandma and researching at the FHL in SLC. I'll be there next month attending the UGA Conference. I'm excited. I'm excited all the way around. Come visit Dickey and Sargent Counties, yes, they look alike. (I wish I knew how to do what Tim has done on the Dunn County site where the visitor can choose the background color.) Before I sign off. Here's a bit of trivia from the 2000 Census - *Kent is a city of 79,000 covering 29 square miles. Dickey and Sargent Counties together have a population of less than 10,000. Well, I've got to get back to doing what I should. Take care. -Char
