    3. I'm a bit slow in jumping in on this one but totally agree. This individual emails me every couple of months with the same request. On the other hand she could pay me to advertise for her, since that's what I would be doing. Right? That never seems to come into the equation. I just delete her messages. Kathleen -----Original Message----- From: Charlotte Kibbie [mailto:csnkibbie@attbi.com] Sent: Wednesday, July 24, 2002 2:33 PM To: NDGENWEB-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [NDGENWEB-L] FW: link to county page Dear Tim and other ND CCs- No doubt others of you have received the following e-mail request. -----Original Message----- From: Patrice [mailto:patrice@pop.ctctel.com] Sent: Wednesday, July 24, 2002 9:59 AM To: csnkibbie@attbi.com Subject: link to county page Charlotte: I conduct genealogical research in North Dakota and I am also the President of the North Dakota State genealogical Society. Thank you for putting a link to the North Dakota State Genealogical Society website on each of your county pages. Would you please put a link to my research page on the main page of each of your North Dakota county pages? Please list only the following title on the link: Professional Genealogical Research Services http://www.rootsweb.com/~ndstark/hartsearch I have access to all the North Dakota federal and state census records, many of the county and town histories, newspapers and I also conduct research at the North Dakota State archives. . Thank you very much. Patrice Hartman I would like to share my feelings and welcome feedback and insights from each of you. Here's my imput. I will answer her question as stated with an emphatic - NO. It is my understanding that the USGenWeb Project is focused on offering free genealogical research information. I know that some CCs participating in the project forget that. I intend to be one CC who is dedicated to keeping that focus. Therefore I will not post her link on the main page. However, professional services do have a place so at some point I imagine I'll be posting some such information BUT not on the main page. This particular request flashed a red flag to me. Even with a disclaimer (which would be a must) I don't feel comfortable placing her link on my site. With a link already to the North Dakota State Genealogical Society researchers should find her info there. And it is there. This is why I'm writing this message, I can't state the particulars of why I'm sensing hesitancy, but I am. Here's a link I recommend for guidelines when considering hiring a professional researcher. Go to www.familysearch.org. Click on the Search tab. Click on Research Helps. On the left, click on Sorted by Title. Click H, then scroll down and click on the title "Hiring a Professional Genealogist". The delay for receipt of each roll of film is about 8 weeks so next year is the target for completion of the 1930 scans. If you are linked to your respective county page in the Archives your reseachers will be well served as I put up the finished scans. Joe

The bad sentence structure and word usage in some of the posts containing viruses sometimes makes it possible to tell them from the "real thing", but sometimes not, so be careful and don't open anything you don't know for sure is OK - I have even received some that were forged to look like they came from RootsWeb and USGenWeb addresses. 1. [NDGENWEB-L] Virus Spread
    2. Garnett J. (Joe) Zsedeny
    3. I have been getting about a dozen Klez virus messages daily. Today one of our CCs got a message reputedly from me (not so) with this included: Trendmicro give you the W32.Klez.E removal tools W32.Klez.E is a dangerous virus that spread through email. For more information, please visit http://www.Trendmicro.comm I put the extra "m" at the end of the URL so that no one will inadvertenly click on it. Anyway, if you tried to use this so called tool you would wipe out your harddrive. If you get ANY suspicious messages like this from any one you know check with them before doing anything. Best to put these in your trash and then immediately empty the trash. Here is something else that might help keep viruses from taking over your address book. Put some of this garbage as the first entry in your book: @%$&*^($. Some tell me that this frustrates the effort. Viruses that take over an address book propagate by sending everyone in your book a message with a virus attached. You think a friend send a message but really you are receiving a virus. Norton 2002, which I keep updated routinely, catches the viruses coming into my machine. If you have broadband and stay online all the time a firewall is a must. I use Tiny Software's Personal Firewall and have never been hacked. Hope this helps Joe

    2. Tim Stowell
    3. >From the Advisory Board of the USGenWeb Project To Teresa Lindquist: The Advisory Board of the USGenWeb Project has voted to declare you a member not in good standing. This action has been taken due to your disregard for the responsibilities associated with being an Advisory Board Member. To wit: You have exhibited total disregard and disrespect for the responsibilities of your office as evidenced by your public posting of executive session correspondence; thus, betraying the trust of fellow board members and all members of the Project who have brought concerns and grievances forward. Having been found "not in good standing", you will not have access to Board-Exec; not be eligible to serve on committees; and your posts to Board-L will be moderated. Should you choose to appeal this decision, you may offer your reasons and an explanation for your actions to the National Coordinator. 1. [NDGENWEB-L] [BOARD-L] Rights & Responsibilities Committee - Final Call for Volunteers
    2. Holly Timm
    3. Although we have a number of volunteers already, I would like to be sure everyone has had a chance to see the call for volunteers (included below). I will continue to accept volunteers until Wednesday night midnight June 26th. I will announce the committee membership Friday evening June 28th or Saturday morning June 29th. Holly Timm, National Coordinator, USGenWeb Project (please forward as appropriate, including all state lists) ------------------------------ Several incidents over time have brought up the discussion at times of a "Bill of Rights", most recently by some on the Bylaws Committee. Both the Bylaws and Guidelines Committee are addressing clarifying and updating some of the requirements, structure and procedure that is perhaps part of how we deal with each other within the project but may not touch on all areas particularly those touching on matters of respect and its opposite, abuse. Although what has been most vocalized publicly is *abuse* or *unfair treatment* of CC's, it is a two way street and SC's as well have been abused as have other volunteers. I am therefore calling for volunteers and creating a Rights & Responsibilities Committee to discuss and investigate these issues, and, if they determine it appropriate, drafting a Volunteer Bill of Rights and Responsibilities. It does need to be perfectly clear that those who volunteer must be open to all sides of the problems, CC, SC, et cetera and be willing to discuss and consider the issues with an open mind. This is neither a *bashing* committee nor a *whitewash* committee. There are no qualifications regarding project position (except one must have some position in the project) but volunteers must make some statement as to why they feel they should be on the committee and why they feel they can be open minded about it. Those interested in the being on the committee should write me with the responses mentioned at usgenweb@cox.net Holly

    1. [NDGENWEB-L] [IMPORTANT] RootsWeb Upgrading to New Servers
    2. Tim Stowell
    3. Beginning Monday, 10 June 2002, RootsWeb will begin the complex and time-consuming process of upgrading our servers to new hardware. o What does this mean for you? Well, it means some servers will be unavailable during this time and we are asking for your patience. For up-to-date information about the different resources, you can visit http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/ as the move progresses. o Web Pages: FTP will be down so that changes can't be made to pages until everything is working correctly on the new servers. There will be a short time that the pages will not be available as the transfer takes place. o List Administrators: When the time comes to move list servers, we will be halting operation on the machine to complete the move. We expect to have the machines down the least amount of time possible. No mail will be sent from or posted to your mailing lists. We do not expect to lose any messages. o Board Administrators: Nothing, unless your board happens to be gatewayed to a mailing list then the information for list administrators apply. Thank you for your patience and understanding while we go through a few "growing pains." - RootsWeb Staff

    1. [NDGENWEB-L] If you get the chance
    2. Tim Stowell
    3. If you get the chance to see/read/purchase - An Indian Winter by Russell Freedman - I think you would enjoy it. It covers the 1833-34 Maximilian-Bodmer Expedition uo the Missouri River passing from St. Louis to Fort McKenzie near the present day Great Falls, MT. The signifigance for North Dakota is that it mentions a tribe of Indian I'd not heard tell of before - Hidatsa. It also speaks of the Mandan. It is full of beautiful art work showing Indians in native dress as well as old paintings and sketches of the area. In the back of the book there is a 'places to visit' section that includes - Fort Clark - Mercer County; Knife River Indina Villages - Mercer County; Ward Earthlodge Village - Bismarck plus the North Dakota Heritage Center also in Bismarck. Even though your particular county may not be mentioned, it is a very interesting read. The book I'm refering to was published for Scholastic, Inc for $12.50 new, paperback - which is laminated. While this was published in 1992 - it can be had relatively cheap - even used. The ISBN number is 0-590-48070-7. My copy was acquired through half.com - for 99 cents plus shipping and handling or about $3.50. I was also unaware of the website half.com - but highly recommend it as a way to save money on book purchases. Tim
