Dear NDGenWeb volunteers, First of all I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas holiday with family and friends. Next my wish for each of you is a prosperous and happy new year. At present Marvin Solberg host for Grant County is leaving us. We thank him for his service to NDGenWeb and Grant County. The following counties are now up for adoption: Emmons Grant Griggs La Moure If you would be interested in hosting one of these, please contact Joe, Lee or myself. Tim
Umm, that should have been Renville County........ Since many of you suggested Norma in Steele County, I sent that along to the person who asked about Noyma, ND. Tim
Since many of you suggested Norma in Steele County, I sent that along to the person who asked about Noyma, ND. The reply I received: "I found him. Thank you again The History of the county lists John " Early settlers in the community included the Dahl Brothers, John McEwen, " Thank you again. Norma was the place." And my thanks to all of you who spoke up to offer your input in assisting this visitor. Tim
There is a small town of Norma in Renville County. Is this what you are looking for? John Stafney Renville CC The more value I put on the lives of others, the more value my own life takes on.
I've a letter from a person seeking a placename in North Dakota called Noyma. So far, in the resources at my disposal I've not found such a place in either North or South Dakota or for that matter anywhere else. If you know of such a place, please let me know or if you have an idea what it might be a misspell or phonetic of some other place, I'll like to be able to assist this person. Thanks, Tim
Please respond to this roll call of coordinators for NDGenWeb. Please include your name, email address that you wish to use for this list and/or any other address you'd like to post from along with what counties, projects you work on for North Dakota. Thanks, Tim
In other news the Rootsweb lists2 is back: "Mail Lists: 2003-10-16 The mailing list server (LISTS2) that has been off-line for maintenance has now been turned back on, and e-mail is being processed. Mail will be processed from the queued mail concurrently with incoming mail. This will mean that not all mail will arrive chronologically until the backlog in the queue has been cleared. It will probably take the better part of the day to get mail from the queues to processing and then depending on the traffic to your ISP further time to get delivered. We did have difficulties with a small number of lists that has meant that these lists are not currently operational and will not be until we have manually checked and fixed any outstanding issues. A list is not currently available." Addendum on that - from Andrew - listmaster: * 77 lists are not operational and will need to be manually fixed, though we still need to grab data from an older backup * if you are upset/grumpy/narky/..., that is nice * if you are an admin for one of the lists you can email me, however I will be emailing you when I have further information. * mail sent to these lists ends up in my mailbox <sigh>, it isn't lost There are 6 county lists in AL, SD, MT, MO, GA and ID and a bunch of surname lists. Tim
I thought this would be working my now but since it isn't --- Something you might find helpful: Per Rootsweb: Mail Lists: 2003-10-09 One of our mailing lists servers (lists2) has been taken offline for maintenance. Any unprocessed mail will be distributed after the server is brought back online. ================================== To find out if the list you are not receiving mail is on this server - after you open a piece of mail from such a list select the blah, blah, blah function of your email client - and you should see something like this: Received: from lists2.rootsweb.com (lists2.rootsweb.com [207.40.200.39]) Tim

Yikes! Well, for those who might be looking for a new search engine, here's a list of some free ones: http://www.freefind.com/ http://www.fusionbot.com/default.htm http://www.picosearch.com/ http://www.sitelevel.com http://www.atomz.com/search/trial_account.htm FWIW, I've personally used Atomz and FreeFind, and like them both. As best I can determine and in talks with other folks it appears that the search engine on Rootsweb designated 'seeker' has gone the way of the dodo bird. If a user had code similar to this: form method= post action= http://seeker.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/htsearch font size="-1" Match: select name=method option value="and" All /option option value="or" Any /option option value="boolean" Boolean</option /select Format: select name="format" option value="builtin-long" Long /option option value="builtin-short" Short /option /select /font input type=hidden name=config value=htdig input type=hidden name=restrict value= http://www.rootsweb.com/~ndcccccc input type=hidden name=exclude value="" br>Search: input type="text" size="30" name="words" value="" input type="submit" value="Search" /form /center beginning < and ending > removed in hopes that the rest of the 'code' would make it through to the list. then they need to find themselves a new search engine. I've received the following from a visitor and am asking for feedback concerning this whether or not you have any objections, thoughts regarding this: "I have discovered the North Dakota GenWeb Project site and found it really interesting. I would like to know how to gain permission to use some of the newspaper stories for a daily program I'm writing for ND Public Radio called Dakota Dateline. The program will be about 3 minutes long and will be aired up to 5 times each day starting in October. Every day's story has to link to a specific day in ND's past, and dates are not very easy to find. Can you please help me out? Some of the stories from those newspapers would be really fun to air.We have been working with the ND Historical Society on this program, and they provide a lot of information on bigger topics, but some of the more obscure stories would be terrific to add to some of the scripts -- I'm trying to include as many different towns in the stories as I can, and this would provide a means of doing that." Tim
I've received an inquiry from a visitor asking if there were any units from North Dakota that may have served in the Spanish American War and/or with the Rough Riders. Does anyone know of such? Thanks, Tim
Dear fellow coordinators for North Dakota: It seems that the political season brings out the worst in some folks. Some folks seemingly don't have enough to do so they must put down other folks efforts. Today I received two emails from persons who have a personal axe to grind with me who are trying to do so, while talking about the quality, quantity and freshness of our sites in North Dakota. The first is the new SC of Iowa - "Gail Meyer Kilgore" <gkilgore@globalcrossing.net> - whose state is embroiled in controversy for their state project has a page that is soliciting funds for their state project which is against our National Bylaws. However, since the current NC also hails from IAGenWeb - it seems perfectly ok by him. The second person bad mouthing our Project is a person who has most likely made money off the project as he posts his URL with some frequency as he copies and sells wills and other court documents to folks around the country - "W. David Samuelsen" <dsam@sampubco.com> These two folks complain that some sites don't have a recently updated last date on their main page. I took a look at about half the state this afternoon and saw without exception beautifully designed sites with a clean, clear, crisp look and feel - some have more data than others but that is to be expected. >From the last time I sent mail to the state list - no one's email was bouncing save Joe's. Joe is still settling in from his move New York to Minnesota. So if I may ask of each of you, please take a look at your front page - and if you've done any work on it or your site recently, please change your last updated date to when that took place. Also please make sure the email address you show on your site - and the one on this list are the same - if you wish them to be the same. Please send any corrections to Lee or myself. Also feel free to let these folks know what you think of their actions with regard to us and your work. I personally don't mind folks asking questions about a site - but to castigate every volunteer in the State Project - I find repugnant. Tim
