Hi George, No question is dumb, George. Its a and/or situation. If you want to receive the list mail as it occurs you can and/or get it in digest form. I can set the list to go either way for you. So let me know which you prefer. But I can't control when the digest is sent. That is an automatic setting done by the list server. I have my mail program set to accept attachments because I get mail for the Archives as attachments. Joe On Fri, 18 Jun 2004 22:26:36 -0500, George L. Hi As long as we are stirring things up and dreaming up new things, I have a dumb question. The default in my mail program is set to not accept attachments. That sounded like a good idea, so I just left it that way. We get the postings of all of our members as they write them. Then we get the "digest" version which comes as an attacment--that I just have to kill, as my program doesn't read it. We all get the individual postings--why do we need a digest of the same messages again? Or if there is some advantage at getting the digest that I haven't figgered out--could we get it as a regualr e-mail message just like we get Roots-L etc. etc.? George Barron
Howard County lives again (in the Archives) thanks to Holly Timm. Holly found and transcribed the ten individuals enumerated in the 1880 census and has put a copy in the Archives. I put Howard up along with the live counties. It can be viewed at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/nd/ndfiles.htm Thanks Holly Joe

Okay, Holly here is a beginning. I will have maps linked to the dates on the Dunn County Archives pages shortly. Dunn County has an interesting history of being created, disappearing, reappearing, and changing boundaries. All this took place from 1873 until taking final form in 1908. In 1873 Howard County was created from unorganized county area. Then in 1883 Dunn County was created from Howard along with other counties. Dunn was elongated east to west and bore no resemblance to its final form. Boundaries changed again in 1885 when a more north south orientation was chosen. In 1896 Dunn disappeared into Stark County. Then in 1901 it reappeared as it was pre 1896. In 1908 the morphing was complete and Dunn became the Dunn we know today. Holly- I like this idea!! Kind of like a "ghost county" project. We could link them from the state sites table, where Lee already has "discontinued" counties listed. Thanks for the welcome!!!! I'm working with Judy Klee to build the Dunn County site and in pursuing information for Dunn County, I find that the probable location for 1880 census information for the area is in the short lived county of Howard which is listed no where on the state page nor in the archives listings. I believe there are a few others with similar short term existences. Can we perhaps produce some pages or sites that explain what/when they were and where to pursue information and include any data attached to them such as 1880 Howard County census images? I need to look further into the 1883 pensioners listing and see whether that was listed as the earlier incarnation of Dunn County or perhaps also as Howard County [Dunn formed from Howard in 1883]. Not only might we thus capture elusive bits of information but also help the researcher understand the chronology of a location they may be researching. These pages or sites probably won't require much maintenance once built but might save a few researchers from snatching their heads bald trying to figure out that reference to born in Howard County ND in great grandma's marriage or death record. What do you all think? Joe? Lee? Michelle? I'd be willing to build the pages if some of you all will help me gather the information. Holly

A couple suggestions: 1] A section on the front page which advertises need for county coordinators, a list of countys needing a coordinator, and someplace which describes the very basic requirements/skills of a coordinator. 2] The state negotiate to get state wide projects under the auspices of NDGenWeb and then advertise on the front page; for example: ND Tombstone Transcription Project, ND Ghost Towns, Reunions, etc. etc. Generate logos for those which don't have logos. 3] OK so more than a couple. Use front page for ONLY NDGenWeb, with one link to 'outside' or 'other' resources on other pages, i.e., Research Helps. Note: These are important to researchers but sooner or later the front page gets cluttered with links and causes confusion and it really is a NDGenWeb site so we should try to emphasize that at least on the front page. Let the visitor browse NDGenWeb resources before pointing to others. 4] Wherever possible emphasize the NDGenWeb as a team of county GenWebs. All of us together are smarter and more energetic and can provide family resources much better than any one of us alone. Sincerely, Mike Emmons County ----- Original Message ----- From: "L. S. Hi everyone!! As the newly appointed ASC, I just wanted to say 'hi' and introduce our new addition to the State Page, expertly coded by Lee. It is called the "Reunion Page" and I encourage you to check it out. Are you planning a family reunion? City celebration? Class Reunion? Let us know and we'll add it to our state page. What a great way to share genealogical information than a reunion! Mike, I just took a look at your site and am impressed. I also like your idea of soliciting data this way. We have several members who live in ND and have extensive knowledge of genealogical resources there. I imagine you will be hearing from some of them.
