    3. Yeah, Mike, I need to work on rewording this. That's why I give this stuff to all of you -- I'm not always good at expressing myself well. New CCs are automatically added, and if I notice one bounces off, I try to contact them to find out what's going on. But if they notice they have bounced off, know their ISP is messing up, are changing addys, or whatever it might be, they should contact me. It goes back to the communication thing. ~Lee On Tuesday, August 17, 2004 1:05 PM [GMT+5=ET], Mike Peterson <geanie@cox.net> wrote: > I suggest the SC or ASC automatically add CC's to the NDGENWEB > Mailing List and unsubscribing is turned off. 3. There are actually two main considerations here, one is what is suggested or recommended for a CC to do which varies a bit by the amount of activity for a county but 'should be' relatively frequent, weekly or nearly so or probably more accurately within a few days of receiving something be it a query or notice of a bad link or whatever. The other is the outer limit of what is acceptable... the point at which a CC is subject to possible removal. 2 months... 6 months... a year? At what point is neglect acceptable grounds for removal? 1. Re: [NDGENWEB-L] CC guidelines - Query System
    2. Holly Timm
    3. I'd like to disagree with 'making' CC's put a query link on the main page. I like to organize my sites by having a list of main categories on the main page, one of these being what I call "Interactive Resources" or a label to that effect which includes links to queries (on and off site) and mailing lists --- that sort of thing. Others like to have a more detailed listing all on the main page and some like to have a welcoming page which then links to a page with the site contents, either in categories or detailed. 3. I suggest the SC or ASC automatically add CC's to the NDGENWEB Mailing List and unsubscribing is turned off. Many CC's are too busy to be involved in a lot of discussion items but it's pretty important that they at least belong to the list even though they can't participate. This is the tool to get info to the CC's. Sincerely, Mike -------------------------------------- **CCs should maintain communication with the SC and ASC. Also, all North Dakota county coordinators must belong to the NDGenWeb email list. Email the state coordinator to be added or to change your email address. 1. CC guidelines
    2. L. S. King
    3. Hello folks! With counties up for adoption and some new CCs coming in, I've been trying to put thought into the guidelines so they know what is expected but need some opinions. In glancing over the national guidelines, they cover the bases fairly well, I think: http://www.usgenweb.org/volunteers/CCguidelines.shtml I have reiterated a few points from the national page, and added our own. My biggest concern is about updating the websites. I think we all agree that our sites should be checked for broken links, and submissions added in a timely manner. I want your opinions about what is 'timely.' How often should we require that a site be checked for bad links and updated? Real Life can be a stinker and thwart us in our attempts to keep sites updated, but yet, letting a site go for six months or a year isn't good for researchers. Here's what I have written for the keeping-the-sites-updated requirement: "County pages must be kept updated. This includes adding submissions in a timely manner and checking for broken and outdated links -- no less than ????. " What should we fill in that question mark with? Without some sort of time period established, 'timely' is too ambiguous to mean anything. Please give me some discussion! Okay -- now on to the rest: **A query system must be in place. This may be a manual system, where submissions are emailed to the county coordinator and added manually to the query page, an automated submission system, such as the Mailmerge Query System, (see Shari Handley's page for a great tutorial that can be used on Rootsweb accounts: http://www.mdgenweb.org/querytutorial.htm), or by using a message board, such as the Rootsweb Message Boards. (basic reiteration of national guidelines) **A USGenWeb Logo must be displayed prominently on the main page of the site as well as a NDGenWeb Logo and a link to the NDGenWeb Project state site. A link to our About the NDGenWeb Project page is also necessary. (reiteration of national guidelines with addition of state links and logo) **A list of local resources, such as county clerk, newspapers, etc. should be a part of each site as well as a link to your county's ND Archives page. A link to the State Resource page would be beneficial, or you may create your own state/general resource page for your site in addition to listing local research help. (reiteration of national guidelines) **The county coordinator's name and current email address must be displayed on at least the main page of the website. **The county must have a search engine. **CCs should maintain communication with the SC and ASC. Also, all North Dakota county coordinators must belong to the NDGenWeb email list. Email the state coordinator to be added or to change your email address. (Following up on this one -- communication goes both ways. Right now I'm having major health problems and am relying on Michelle to help keep me on track. So a heads-up -- if you write me offlist, cc it to Michelle as well.) Share with the list what you think of all these requirements. They are what have always been required, just not written down. I *really* want feedback from all of you. ~Lee S. King SC NDGenWeb Project

    3. Hi Don, I began with the listing from USGS using their location names as a starting point and then on the page requested additional information from my readers. If Dunn County is any example, some cemeteries will go locally by different names, some will not be on the list et cetera. One just needs to annotate or add to the USGS list. I did drop the latitude and longitude data but kept the links to USGS map info. In Dunn County I was very fortunate to have assistance and transcripts from Terri Godlevsky to both update the listing and who provided transcripts. http://www.rootsweb.com/~nddunn2/cems/index.html Holly who figures we have to start somewhere At 12:48 PM 8/2/2004 -0400, DTGARDNER@aol.com wrote: >I am working on a site named "Ward County Roots." >I found a township map which was incomplete as far as what is in which >township. I received an email from someone who browses the web site in family research. He found an ancestor (success) but he wanted to let me know that in both the 1900 and 1910 census, the surname is not spelled correctly and asked to get them corrected. Both of these files are in USGenWeb Archives - I link to them. I sent an email to the transcriber asking him if he could change it. The email bounced. I've run across this problem before and once tried to have one corrected with no success. It seems the census records that are out there, some in various places, from my experience, never get updated. Am I assuming correctly. Would anyone wish to suggest something here. The last thing I really want to do is to go back to this fella and say tough luck; no change possible. I do intend to respond to him; he deserves a response. But I am really struggling with what to say. Sincerely, Mike Emmons CC
