Mrs. Bates was born Aug. 29, 1932, in Wilkes County to the late William and Pricilla Roberts. She was a member of Gospel Chapel Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Luther Roberts, Glen Roberts, Arvil Roberts; sisters, Ella Roberts, Connie Roberts; two grandchildren; a great- grandchild; and a son-in-law. Surviving are her devoted and loving husband of 59 ½ years, Willie Jarvis Bates; children, Nancy (Alvin) Bell, Betty (Ronald) Poindexter, Thelma (Hank) Durham, Bill (April) Bates, Ralph (Tesheka) Bates, Shelby Bates; sisters, Bretta Moxley, Mary (Joe) Wagoner, Frances Corthren, JoAnn (Jack) Wagoner; brothers, Richard (Marie) Roberts, Thurmond (Barbara) Roberts; 12 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. Her funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 13, at! Gospel Chapel Church, with the Rev. Terry Coe, the Rev. Ralph Casstevens, the Rev. Walter Phillips, and the Rev. Roy Nixon officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The body will be in the church 30 minutes before the service. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today, Dec. 12, at Gentry Family Funeral Service in Yadkinville. The family would like to thank Susan with Yadkin Valley Home Health, all of the Hospice Nurses, and a special friend and caregiver, Ann Hutchens, for all of the love and care shown to Josephine during her sickness.
